The opening matchday of the Clausura MX was played with few surprises, but it allowed only two home teams to secure victories.

Defending champions Toluca got off to a strong start, defeating one of the title contenders, Monterrey, 0–1 away from home.

América, on the other hand, could not begin as well, settling for a scoreless draw on the road against Tijuana, while Guadalajara did take advantage at home with a 2–0 win over Pachuca.

Another away winner was Tigres, who claimed a 1–2 victory against Atlético San Luis, while Necaxa are the first league leaders after defeating Santos 1–3.

Liga MX Matchday 1: Tijuana vs. América

América dreamed of starting the tournament with a win and sending a clear message at the beginning of the Clausura MX, but they could not get past a dull scoreless draw in their visit to Tijuana.

It was a match with very few goal-scoring chances. A goal ruled out for Raúl Zúñiga early on due to offside hinted at a different type of game, but that was not the case. The only clear opportunity came from a shot inside the box by Rodrigo Aguirre, which Antonio Rodríguez saved finely.

The goals came in the second half. In the 49th minute, Marcelo Flores received the ball inside the box after a cross from the right, cut outward to beat a couple of defenders, and struck a powerful left-footed shot high that hit the post and went in for the 0–1.

The equalizer arrived in the 74th minute through Italo-Brazilian João Pedro Galvão, who headed in from a corner kick, but three minutes later Flores appeared again, after a backheel pass from André-Pierre Gignac, to fire a low, left-footed cross-shot for the final 1–2.
