Croatia vs. Scotland

Croatia will face Scotland on Tuesday in the final matchday of Group D of UEFA EURO 2020. Both teams can only hope for a win. Croatia opened the final matchday with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, but remain third ahead of Scotland on goal difference. The Scots go into the match in high spirits after impressing in their draw with England, and will they be able to build on that on their return to Glasgow to face an opponent against whom they have not lost any of their five meetings, three of them victories? A win could end their curse of having never progressed beyond the group stage of a major tournament.

Here are five interesting facts to keep in mind ahead of the final group stage match between Croatia and Scotland:

1. Croatia will be looking for their first-ever win over Scotland when the two sides meet in Glasgow in the final Group D matchday.

2. Both home and away, Scotland are unbeaten in their previous five matches against their matchday three opponents and will be looking to end their group campaign on a positive note in the penultimate UEFA EURO 2020 fixture at Hampden Park.

3. Both teams have taken one point each from their first two Group D matches.

4. This is Croatia’s sixth EURO. Since its independence, it has only missed out once, at UEFA EURO 2000.

5. Scotland has qualified for two EURO finals, in 1992 and 1996. In both, they failed to make it out of the group stage, although they won one of their three matches in each tournament.

Let’s take a look at how both teams are coming into their final group stage match at the European Championship:

Croatia: Croatia seems to be below their level, but they have one last chance to redeem themselves and reach their main goal: the knockout stage. From what I have seen so far, it will be extremely difficult. They have never beaten Scotland, and this week they haven’t put up a fight either. Zlatko Dalić will make some changes, perhaps fielding young Dynamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Ivanušec on the right. Croatia has often managed to pull itself together when the going gets tough; can it muster its inner strength and do it again?

Scotland: The national team will be hoping their unbeaten record against Croatia continues on Tuesday. However, only a win will be enough at Hampden if Steve Clarke’s men are to make history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. After the emotional high at Wembley, they must carry the same intensity into this match at Hampden and do what they have failed to do in their first two games – score a goal. It’s a winner-take-all game.
