Brasileirão Matchday 14 Roundup

The Brasileirão only partially played its Matchday 14 this week, as several games were postponed due to teams participating in the Copa Sudamericana.

It was a round full of surprises: Palmeiras drew at home against newly promoted Mirassol, Botafogo couldn’t beat relegation-zone side Vitória, and Santos climbed out of the bottom four with a win over league leaders Flamengo.

That loss by the ‘Mengão’ wasn’t capitalized on by RB Bragantino, who drew at home with São Paulo, while Cruzeiro remains within striking distance.

It was an unusual matchday with very few goals—only one of the five games played so far featured more than one goal.

Brasileirão Matchday 14: Palmeiras vs. Mirassol

Palmeiras had a chance to close in on the top of the table but failed to take advantage of facing a newly promoted side, drawing 1-1 at home with Mirassol.

The ‘Verdão’ pushed forward throughout the match and finally broke through in the 54th minute thanks to Facundo Torres, who finished off a brilliant sequence. Richard Ríos delivered a great pass to Raphael Veiga, who set up the Uruguayan for the 1-0.

The surprise came in the 72nd minute, when Francisco Da Costa—making his debut after being loaned from Cerro Porteño and only 13 minutes into his appearance—tapped in a header from João Victor to level the score at 1-1.

Palmeiras pushed hard for the win but couldn’t find a way through. Now, they sit in fifth place with 23 points, four behind the leaders. Mirassol, meanwhile, is in 11th place with 18 points.

Brasileirão Matchday 14: Santos vs. Flamengo

Santos pulled off the biggest upset of the round, delivering a heavy blow by defeating league leaders Flamengo 1-0 with a goal from Neymar that helped them escape the relegation zone.

The ‘Mengão’ had most of the chances and turned goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão into the man of the match. The ‘Peixe’, on the other hand, created very little but made it count in the 84th minute when their captain received a pass from Guilherme with his back to goal, turned, and fired in the only goal of the game.

It was Neymar’s best performance since joining the team and a crucial one for Santos, who desperately need him to climb out of trouble. With this win, they move up to 13th place with 14 points, while Flamengo remains top with 27.

Another noteworthy moment from the match was the debut of 17-year-old Robinho Júnior, son of former star Robinho, who played his first minutes for Santos.

Brasileirão Matchday 14: RB Bragantino vs. São Paulo

In a match full of goals and momentum shifts, Red Bull Bragantino and São Paulo drew 2-2—a result that benefits neither side.

The visitors came in desperate for a win as they hover near the relegation zone, and they struck early when André Silva headed in a Luciano cross in the 9th minute to make it 0-1.

Right before halftime, the hosts equalized when Guilherme Lopes delivered a cross, and Uruguayan Guzmán Rodríguez headed it in for his first goal with the club—and his first in over a year, with the last coming on July 14, 2024, while playing for Peñarol.

Early in the second half, the home side turned the game around when Ecuadorian José Hurtado fired a shot from outside the box that deflected off Alan Franco and completely changed direction, making it 2-1.

The ‘Tricolor’, missing Jonathan Calleri and Lucas Moura due to injury, created plenty of clear chances and didn’t deserve to be trailing. They finally leveled the score when a cross found Luciano again, who assisted André Silva for the second time—this time with a bicycle kick pass—and the forward scored to seal the 2-2 final result.

In the end, it was a fair outcome given that both teams had plenty of chances, but it helped neither. RB Bragantino missed the opportunity to become the sole league leaders and now sit tied with Flamengo and Cruzeiro at 27 points, though both clubs have a game in hand. Meanwhile, São Paulo is in 16th place with 13 points, just one above the relegation zone.

Brasileirão Matchday 14: Ceará vs. Corinthians

Ceará +147Corinthians +210Draw Offs: +200

Ceará entered this fixture coming off a derby win over Fortaleza, but looked disjointed and uninspired in the final third. Defensive lapses, especially from goalkeeper Bruno Ferreira and center-back Marllon, proved costly.

Corinthians finally ended a four-game winless run and secured their first away victory of the season. The decisive moment came from Talles Magno, who converted after a slick assist from Carrillo. The team was compact defensively, but still showed limited attacking fluency.

With the win, Corinthians climb slightly but remain far from the top in 9th place, while Ceará’s home form continues to be a concern if they want to climb the Brasileirão standings.
