CONCACAF Champions Cup: Semifinals Second Leg Preview

Last Updated on April 29, 2024 9:33 pm by Erwin Noguera

The Concacaf Champions Cup is in its semifinals, and this week, the two teams that will play in the final will be defined. On the one hand, there is the series of two Mexican clubs, Pachuca and América, and on the other, the champion of the United States, Columbus Crew, wants to prevent another Mexican team from advancing to the final stage, we are referring to Monterrey.

The Tuzos will be playing at home and have the advantage of having the tournament’s top scorer, Venezuelan striker Salomón Rondón, and the fact that they did not lose the first leg at the Azteca stadium (1-1).

Monterrey has a more complicated task, as they lost the first leg in the United States to Columbus (2-1), so they will now have to take advantage of the support of their fans at the BBVA stadium to try to reach the next stage.

This could well be the final of Mexican soccer but moved to the Concacaf Champions Cup. The first leg ended 1-1, a result that could be considered favorable for Pachuca, who will now have the support of their fans. Ecuadorian Andrés Micolta was the hero in the first leg, but to advance to the final, the Tuzos need to demonstrate the offensive power they have had this semester.

Pachuca has just left Philadelphia Union and Herediano on the road. So far, they have scored 14 goals in five games and have the best scorer in Salomón Rondón, with seven goals and one assist. The Venezuelan has 15 goals in the semester.

América is a great candidate to be champion, but once again needs its hierarchy to win at the Hidalgo stadium. The Águilas have overcome Real Estelí and Chivas with some suffering, but against the New England Revolution, they were convincing, winning 9-2 on aggregate.

But the current Mexican champion has some great players for these moments, especially Henry Martín, Julián Quiñones, and the Chilean Diego Valdés. A fact to bear in mind is that the Azulcrema team has only won once away against Pachuca in the last five matches.

After eliminating Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez’s Inter Miami, Monterrey has had a very irregular performance. Not only did they lose the first leg of this match 2-1 in the United States, but they had also gone four Liga MX matches without a win, losing on three occasions. This Sunday, they could break this negative streak and crushed Necaxa 2-5.

Before losing on U.S. soil, the Rayados had won all their matches in this tournament against Comunicaciones, Cincinnati, and Inter, so they must show their quality to avoid a hard blow to Fernando Ortiz’s process. The Regiomontanos need Brandon Vásquez to confirm that he is their best converter in the tournament, as he has four goals so far.

Columbus Crew is the current champion of the United States and has revalidated that status by having a great season in the Concacaf Champions Cup, eliminating teams like Houston Dynamo and, above all, the complicated Tigres.

There are several stars, but there is one that stands out above the rest: the Colombian striker Juan Camilo “El Cucho” Hernández, who has scored two goals in the competition. This team has only lost once in its last ten matches, although it has drawn on six occasions. On their previous visit to this Mexican city, they drew 1-1 with Tigres and then won on penalties.

Monterrey vs. Columbus Crew Betting Pick: Monterrey
