Last Updated on December 11, 2023 2:41 pm by Erwin Noguera

The Premier League continues on course for the 2023/24 season, and we enjoyed a day full of action and excitement last weekend.

The teams had to play two games in less than a week, so we could also notice some overload in some players. However, one way or another, we have to say that the games were intense and exciting.

Liverpool won again and remain at the top of the table with 1 point ahead of Arsenal, who lost to Aston Villa. The Villains continue to row against the current and, thanks to the victories against City and the Gunners, they climbed to third place in the standings and are only 2 points behind the Reds.

Manchester City ended their run of four consecutive games without a win, while Tottenham crushed Newcastle to move back into the Champions League places.

The match that kicked off the 16th round of the Premier League was between Crystal Palace and Liverpool, which was defined in the last seconds thanks to Harvey Elliot’s goal to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory.

The match was a little bit difficult from start to finish, as none of the teams had a clear idea to hurt their rivals. Because of this, we had a first half with little action and a bit boring.

However, everything changed in the second half when Crystal Palace took advantage of a sweet offensive play to generate a foul inside the Liverpool area that was called a penalty. Finally, in the 57th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the first goal.

Then, in the 76th minute, Liverpool were able to equalize thanks to a great goal by Mohamed Salah. When we all thought the match would end 1-1, Harvey Elliot was the hero for Liverpool, scoring a goal in the 90+1 minute to give his team a 2-1 victory.

One of the most surprising results we had in this Premier League matchday 16 was undoubtedly Bournemouth’s crushing 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Indeed, United are not playing well this season. However, it was unthinkable that they could be annihilated by Bournemouth at home like that.

The locals owned the ball for the entire 90 minutes, also generating as many as 20 scoring chances. Notwithstanding, their strikers were not up to the task and couldn’t score a single goal. On the other hand, Bournemouth had only four shots on target, three of which were goals.

It all started with Dominic Solanke’s goal in the 5th minute, which gave the team the necessary push to face the rest of the match. Then, in the 68th minute, Bournemouth scored 2-0 through Philip Billing in a fortuitous play. Finally, 5 minutes later, Marcos Sensei rattled the Red Devils’ net to seal his team’s splendid victory at the mythical Old Trafford Stadium.

Result: Manchester United (0) – (3) Bournemouth

Finally, the match that closed the 16th round of the Premier League provided plenty of excitement from start to finish, just as we expected. However, this time, Tottenham annihilated the Magpies 4-1 to return to winning ways.

The Spurs were infinitely superior to Newcastle in this match, something evident with the 23 clear scoring chances they created in the entire game, and they also had 12 direct shots on target.

Tottenham got off to an exceptional start thanks to goals from Destiny Udogie (’26) and Richarlison (’38), going into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead. Then, 15 minutes into the second half, Tottenham made it 3-0 thanks to a second goal of the night from Brazilian striker Richarlison.

The Spurs’ attack continued unabated. Then, in the 85th minute, they earned a penalty that was converted by Son Heung-min to make the score 4-0. Finally, Newcastle scored the consolation goal in the 90+1st minute through Joelinton.

Result: Tottenham (4) – (1) Newcastle
