Premier League Matchday 18 Roundup

Last Updated on February 16, 2024 9:59 am by Erwin Noguera

In the Premier League Matchday 18, Arsenal had one of the toughest visits of the season at Anfield and could hold Liverpool to a draw, which allowed them to maintain the first position in the Premier League with a point ahead of their pursuers.

The Gunners have in their hands to close the winter in the first place of the English league thanks to this parity.

The fact that Mikel Arteta’s men remain at the top of the Premier League is also because the surprising Aston Villa dropped points at home, as they miraculously drew with Sheffield United, a team fighting to avoid relegation.

Tottenham took advantage of the results, moving to fourth place and four points behind Arsenal. As Manchester City did not play against Brentford due to the Club World Cup they dropped to fifth place.

Aston Villa’s great strength had been playing at home. However, this time, they could only draw 1-1 with Sheffield United.

The visitors opened the account in the 87th minute with Cameron Archer, who only had to push a cross from the left, and it looked like it would be the surprise of the matchday. But in stoppage time, at 90+7′, Italian Nicolo Zaniolo equalized by heading in a cross from Douglas Luiz.

This is the first time Villa have dropped points in front of their home fans, but they still maintained their third place with 39 points, the same as second-placed Liverpool. Sheffield is last with nine points.

Tottenham had a tough match at home against Everton, who were coming off a four-game winning streak, but Ange Postecoglou’s side came out on top to win 2-1.

Brazilian striker Richarlison opened the account after 9 minutes when he headed in Brennan Johnson’s cross from the right. In the 18th minute, Heung-Min Son was in charge of the second goal when he sent into the net a bad clearance by the opposing goalkeeper. The Toffees scored in the 82nd minute with Portuguese André Gomes, who grabbed a rebound, and with a cross-shot, he inflated the net.

Spurs took advantage of the fact that Manchester City did not play and moved up to fifth place with 36 points. Everton is 16th with 16 points.

In the most attractive match of the day, Liverpool drew 1-1 with Arsenal, who were able to maintain their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes scored the first goal with a header after 4 minutes, while Egyptian Mohamed Salah equalized after an excellent individual action and subsequent shot inside the box after a long pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold (29′).

The Reds could have won in the 70th minute when a counterattack led by Salah left five Liverpool players in front of Declan Rice. The Egyptian opened the ball for Arnold, who entered the area to shoot but hit the post.

The Gunners have three games unbeaten with the Reds in the Premier League and reached 40 points at the top, one more than the team led by Jürgen Klopp.
