2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship Top Contenders

Scottie Scheffler enters the FedEx Cup Playoffs as the clear favorite. Last month, he claimed his 17th PGA Tour title by winning The Open, securing his fourth Major, and leaving only the U.S. Open to complete the career Grand Slam.

The American has captured four titles in 2025: The Open, PGA Championship, THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, and The Memorial Tournament. He’s recorded 11 consecutive top-10 finishes and 13 in 16 events this season. The last time he failed to crack the top 10 was in mid-March. His worst finish of the year was 25th at the WM Phoenix Open. In 2024, he finished fourth in this very tournament.

Ranked second is Xander Schauffele, who has yet to win a title this season. After claiming both the PGA Championship and The Open in 2024, Schauffele has managed just three top-10 finishes in 2025—although two came in his most recent starts, and two were in Majors.

Last year, Schauffele was runner-up in this event, finishing two strokes behind Matsuyama. That remains his only top-10 finish at this tournament, as his best result in seven previous appearances was 16th place.

Lastly, there’s Justin Thomas. The 32-year-old American has enjoyed a solid 2025, returning to the winner’s circle for the first time in three years by claiming the RBC Heritage. In addition to that win, he’s posted six other top-10s, including runner-up finishes at The American Express, the Valspar Championship, and the Truist Championship.

July wasn’t particularly a strong month for Thomas, finishing 22nd at the Genesis Scottish Open and 34th at The Open. However, he does have history at TPC Southwind, having won the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational there in 2020, giving him a valuable edge in experience.

2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship Outside picks

Tommy Fleetwood continues to deliver solid performances, but he’s still searching for his first PGA Tour title after 161 events played. In 2025, he has recorded five top-10 finishes, including a runner-up result at the Travelers Championship. His best finish at this tournament came in 2023, when he placed third.

Now let’s talk about the defending champion, Hideki Matsuyama. The Japanese star kicked off the 2025 season on a high note by winning The Sentry, the year’s opening tournament. However, he hasn’t managed another top-10 finish since. Most recently, he finished 19th at the Wyndham Championship.

Ludvig Åberg is another player who was expected to have a stronger season. He won the Genesis Invitational in February and finished seventh at the Masters, but didn’t record another top-10 until placing eighth at the Genesis Scottish Open in mid-August. He’s only played this tournament once, where he finished 40th.
