The 2025 Liga MX Apertura kicks off Matchday 1 with a clash between two teams that aren’t generating much excitement, but could spring a surprise: Puebla vs. Atlas.
Puebla is coming off a disastrous Clausura tournament, finishing second-to-last and enduring a long winless streak.
Atlas, on the other hand, was also eliminated early, though their campaign wasn’t as poor as Puebla’s, and they showed some improvement toward the end.

Why Bet on Puebla?
One of the worst teams in recent years—if not the worst—has been Puebla. In the last tournament, they finished second-to-last with just nine points, two ahead of Santos. They scored only 12 goals, the fewest in the entire competition.
They ended the season with three straight losses and a winless streak of nine matches, earning just one point and scoring only two goals during that stretch—a truly embarrassing run. Despite this, the club decided to retain Argentine coach Pablo Guede.
Over the last three tournaments, Puebla has won just seven out of 51 matches, collecting only 28 of a possible 153 points. Last year, they set a Mexican record for the fewest points in a single tournament, earning only five, with just one win.
‘La Franja’ made many changes ahead of this tournament in an attempt to turn things around. New arrivals include Edgar Guerra, Alejandro Organista, Owen González, Luis Gabriel Rey, Miguel ‘Isco’ Ramírez, Esteban Lozano, Nicolás Díaz, and Walter Portales. Departures include Gustavo Ferrareis, Luis Quiñones, Alberto Herrera, Jorge Rodríguez, Brayan Angulo, Luis García, Jair González, Christian Mares, Sebastián Olmedo, Emmanuel Gularte, and Wacho Jiménez.
They played several friendlies, winning the first few against Atlante (4-3), Morelia (3-0), Zacatepec (1-0), Coyotes (2-1), and Querétaro (5-4). However, they lost their last two matches 2-1 against América and Toluca.
Why Bet on Atlas?
Atlas didn’t perform as poorly as their upcoming opponent, but they were still eliminated in the regular phase. With 18 points, they finished 14th, just three points behind 10th-place Pumas, who claimed the final Play-In spot.
One of the positives for the Jalisco-based team is that they ended the season strong, beating Querétaro 2-1 away and drawing the derby against Chivas, eliminating their Guadalajara rivals on goal difference.
If there’s one standout on the ‘Zorros’, it’s Uros Durdevic. The Montenegrin striker scored 12 goals and provided three assists, including nine goals in his last eight matches.
The club has focused on shoring up its defense, bringing in goalkeeper César Ramos and defenders Gustavo Ferrareis, Róber Pier, and Jorge Rodríguez. Ramos could play an important role right away, as starting keeper Camilo Vargas is injured and may miss the season opener.
Although neither club has made it official yet, multiple media outlets in Mexico report that midfielder Jeremy Márquez is set to join Cruz Azul—a significant loss for Atlas, as he’s been one of their top players and has spent his entire career at the club.
Final Betting Analysis: Puebla vs. Atlas
These are undoubtedly two clubs that owe their fans after their recent performances. While Puebla’s last Liga MX tournament was embarrassing, they made many changes that could prove significant, so we’re giving them the benefit of the doubt and predicting they’ll take the win.
