2025 Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo Top Contenders
The main favorite for this tournament is Andrey Rublev. The Russian tennis player recently lost in the round of 16 at Wimbledon to Carlos Alcaraz and is aiming to capture his second title of the season after winning the ATP 500 in Doha, also on a hard court.
Currently ranked No. 14 in the world, Rublev has 17 singles titles, along with four in doubles and an Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles. Of his singles titles, he owns two Masters 1000 titlesโMonte Carlo (2023) and Madrid (2024)โand 11 have come on hard courts, his preferred surface.
In 2025, he has a record of 21 wins and 15 losses, winning one of the 15 tournaments he has played so far. On hard courts, he has nine wins and seven losses.
Also among the contenders is Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian, ranked No. 7 in the world, had been showing strong performances on clay but was recently upset in the first round at Wimbledon by Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Champion of the ATP 500 in Hamburg and ATP 250 in Naples, both in 2022, this year, Musetti became just the fifth player in history to reach the semifinals of all the clay Masters 1000 tournaments and Roland Garros in a single season. He even reached the final in Monte Carlo, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
In 2025, he holds a 25โ9 record overall, and on hard courts, he has six wins and four losses, with the Miami Masters being his most recent tournament on the surface, where he lost in the round of 16 to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
As a third candidate, we include Denis Shapovalov. The 26-year-old Canadian is currently ranked No. 31 in the ATP rankings and is one of those players who favors and enjoys hard courts.
Shapovalov has won three ATP titles, all on hard courts, including one this yearโthe ATP 500 in Dallas. He also has four runner-up finishes on this surface, including a Masters 1000 final against Novak Djokovic.
He recently lost in the first round at Wimbledon to Mariano Navone in four sets and has won just one of his last five matches. In 2025, he holds a 15โ14 record overall, with 12 wins and six losses on hard courts.
2025 Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo Outside Picks
Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, currently ranked No. 28 in the world, has been close to winning his first ATP title this year, and Los Cabos could be his chance. He was a finalist at the ATP 250 in Delray Beach and the ATP 500 in Acapulcoโboth on hard courtsโso the surface seems to suit him well. He lost in the third round at Wimbledon to Taylor Fritz.
Cameron Norrie is coming off a strong Wimbledon campaign, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Carlos Alcaraz. Along the way, he defeated players like Frances Tiafoe and Roberto Bautista Agut. The British player has five ATP titles in his career, three of them on hard courts. He was a finalist at this tournament in 2022, losing to Daniil Medvedev. However, this year he hasnโt done particularly well on hard courts, with seven wins and eight losses.
Now letโs talk about the tournamentโs defending champion: Jordan Thompson. Heโs a player who has found more success in doubles, having won eight titles, including the US Open. In singles, he has just one title, which he won at this very ATP 250 event. Currently ranked No. 39 in the world, he reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon before retiring in the second set of his match against Taylor Fritz, raising doubts about whether heโll be able to compete next week.
