<br \/><br \/>As with most things in sports, it\u2019s about money.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ink-adddata-ink-adddata-ink\">\u00a0<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f4f8b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f4f8b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Liga MX Determine a Champion?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Since 1996, Mexico has used the split-season system, in different formats. <br \/><br \/>Originally Liga MX played the\u00a0<em>invierno<\/em>\u00a0(winter) and\u00a0<em>verano<\/em>\u00a0(summer) tournaments. <br \/><br \/>Now the league plays the\u00a0<em>Apertura<\/em>\u00a0(Opening) from July to December and the\u00a0<em>Clausura<\/em>\u00a0(Closing) from January to May. <br \/><br \/>You might be asking yourself, why does the closing tournament start at the beginning of the year? It&#8217;s because Liga MX is keeping in line with the FIFA calendar that starts in July and ends in May.<br \/><br \/>How Does Liga MX Work?<br \/><br \/>Liga MX has 18 teams.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>During the Apertura\u00a0the clubs all play 17 matches, facing every team once. <br \/><br \/>The top eight teams make\u00a0<em>la liguilla<\/em>, the mini-league playoffs to determine the champion. <br \/><br \/>This repeats for the Clausura, only <strong>things are reversed<\/strong> so that every team plays home and away against every other team over the course of the full season.<br \/><br \/>Even though the idea of a split season may seem strange to North American sports fans, Liga MX isn\u2019t the only league to split its season in two. <br \/><br \/>The format is popular in Central and South America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay, just to name a few.<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s in use in the United States as well, with the NASL switching to a split-season format in 2013. Additionally, some minor league baseball leagues in the U.S. split their seasons in half.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Argentina was the first country to adopt the format\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goalprofits.com\/apertura-clausura-exciting-alternative-to-european-football\/\">back in 1967<\/a>, in part for weather concerns. At first, the break between the two halves of the season let teams avoid the heat of summer. <br \/><br \/>There was also another major reason &#8211; conforming to the season FIFA prefers, from July to May.<br \/><br \/>So back to the original questions: <br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9608775 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9608775\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Why does Liga MX use the Apertura and Clausura format?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Why crown two champions in one season?<\/p>\n<p>Why not just play one long season?<\/p>\n<p>The real reason is excitement because excitement means larger audiences and larger audiences mean more money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While one long season would better determine a true champion, money will almost always win out over objectively determining a champion.<\/p>\n<p>Liga MX is one of the most exciting football (soccer for you North Americans) leagues to watch in the world in terms of talent and style of play.<\/p>\n<p>Only the Bundesliga and Premier League have larger average attendance figures among soccer leagues and in North America only the NFL and MLB draw more fans.<\/p>\n<p>With shorter seasons, more is on the line in every match. It\u2019s part of the reason an NFL regular-season game draws more TV viewers than the average MLB postseason game.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there are two playoffs every year, which is always fun. Imagine if there were two Super Bowls every year.<\/p>\n<p>Fans would eat it up; advertisers would go nuts.<\/p>\n<p>With Liga MX, they do both.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And if two Super Bowls aren&#8217;t enough, there\u2019s a higher chance of seeing the big derbies more often. In Europe, the biggest rivalries are played twice per season with maybe another meeting or two in cup competitions.<\/p>\n<p>In Mexico, it\u2019s conceivable <strong>rivals could play each other six times<\/strong> before even considering cup tournaments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are some disadvantages to the split-season format, not the least of which is not crowning one true winner each season.<\/p>\n<p>Championships are kind of the point of playing sports.<\/p>\n<p>Since every match is so meaningful in a shorter season, it\u2019s harder for managers to find playing time for younger or fringe players, decreasing player development across the board.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s confusing and people don\u2019t like to be confused.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Liga MX has the champions of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments face off in the Campeon de Campeones matchup in July to determine one champion, but it doesn&#8217;t have the same level of intensity as the regular-season tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2018 the\u00a0Campeones Cup pits the Campeon de Campeones winner from Liga MX against the MLS Cup champion in September.
