Santos Sa\u00fal “Canelo” \u00c1lvarez Barrag\u00e1n<\/strong> is a Mexican professional boxer<\/a>, born on 18 July, 1990.

He has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from\u00a0light-middleweight<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0light heavyweight<\/strong>. This includes unified titles in three of those weight classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alvarez<\/strong> is currently a unified super middleweight world champion<\/strong>; having held the WBA<\/strong> (Super), WBC<\/strong>, and Ring magazine <\/strong>titles since 2020, and the WBO <\/strong>title since May 2021.

Alvarez<\/strong> is known as an excellent counterpuncher, being able to exploit openings in his opponents’ guards. Meanwhile, he avoids punches with head and body movement, and he is also known as a formidable body puncher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 2021, Alvarez<\/strong> is ranked as the world’s best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec; The Ring; the Boxing Writers Association of America; the TBRB, and ESPN<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

43rd Fight Vs. Austin Trout:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The fight was supposed to take place during\u00a0Cinco de Mayo\u00a0weekend as the co-main event to\u00a0Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert Guerrero<\/strong>.

But due to a contract disagreement between\u00a0\u00c1lvarez\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Mayweather\u00a0<\/strong>regarding their potential fight on 14 September 2013,\u00a0\u00c1lvarez\u00a0<\/strong>opted to headline his card instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In front of 39,247 fans, \u00c1lvarez successfully defended his WBC light middleweight<\/strong> title and won both the\u00a0WBA <\/strong>(Regular)\u00a0and vacant\u00a0Ring<\/em>\u00a0light middleweight<\/strong> titles.

During the first few rounds, Trout <\/strong>seemed to have a good game plan.

However, \u00c1lvarez’s <\/strong>power took over after the third round, eventually scoring a knockdown in the seventh round to give Trout <\/strong>the first knockdown of his career.

The fight was closer than expected. But Alvarez <\/strong>still managed to dominate Trout throughout the fight with impressive head movement and shocking power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

57th Fight Vs. Callum Smith:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This was the first leg of Alvarez\u2019s <\/strong>trifecta quest to become the undisputed super middleweight world champion<\/strong>.

Alvarez<\/strong>, who completed the brother’s sweep by beating Callum\u2019s older brother\u00a0Liam Smith<\/strong>\u00a0when he was a\u00a0junior middleweight<\/strong>\u00a0in 2016, thoroughly dominated the 6-foot-3\u00a0Callum<\/strong>, who had a seven-inch height advantage over the 5-foot-8\u00a0Alvarez\u00a0<\/strong>and an eight-inch reach advantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alvarez\u00a0<\/strong>regained a world title at\u00a0light-middleweight<\/strong>\u00a0following a devastating left hook to the body in round nine.

Smith <\/strong>was also knocked down once in round seven and once in round eight, in a fight where \u00c1lvarez <\/strong>was in control from the opening bell.

\u00c1lvarez <\/strong>landed 157 punches from 422 thrown with a connect rate of 37%, compared to Smith landing 115 from 403 thrown, a connect rate of 29%.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

48th Fight Vs. Miguel Cotto:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Future Hall of Famer Cotto <\/strong>was 35 and on the downside of his career. But he was still a respected force to Alvarez<\/strong>, who was 25.

This was the classic case of a young lion against an old lion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alvarez\u2019s <\/strong>star was rising, while Cotto <\/strong>would not fight again for two more years and ended his illustrious career in 2017.

Alvarez<\/strong>, feeling highly confident, stalked Cotto <\/strong>and towards the latter rounds cornered and punished the Puerto Rican legend.

That proved to be the difference, allowing Alvarez <\/strong>to become the WBC middleweight champion<\/strong> and let the world know they better pay attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

56rd Fight Vs. Sergey Kovalev:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alvarez<\/strong>, then 29, made history by jumping 15 pounds to become the 25th four-division champion in boxing history, dispensing Kovalev <\/strong>in the 11th round to win the WBO <\/strong>175-pound belt.

Kovalev <\/strong>tried to work behind a good jab early on, but Canelo <\/strong>began burrowing in and landing blunt-body shots on the 36-year-old Russian.

Alvarez <\/strong>gradually wore Kovalev <\/strong>down and plowed a left hook to Kovalev\u2019s <\/strong>jaw in the 11th, which staggered Kovalev<\/strong>.

Smelling blood, Alvarez <\/strong>closed in and tagged Kovalev <\/strong>with a right to the chin, ending it at 2:15 of the round.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

53rd Fight Vs. Gennady Golovkin II:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Golovkin <\/strong>and Alvarez <\/strong>had been circling each other like rabid dogs since their September 2017 draw.

Many boxing pundits thought\u00a0Golovkin\u00a0<\/strong>won their first fight, which irked\u00a0Alvarez<\/strong>.\u00a0Canelo\u00a0<\/strong>boxed more in their first encounter while\u00a0Golovkin\u00a0<\/strong>stalked, but this time, those roles were reversed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canelo <\/strong>got off to a strong start, bruising Golovkin\u2019s <\/strong>face and ribs with thudding shots.

The fight was much different from the first bout in terms of action. \u00c1lvarez, <\/strong>who was described by Golovkin’s team as a “runner”, altered his style and became more aggressive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both boxers found the use of their respective jabs from the opening round with Golovkin <\/strong>using his jab more as the fight went on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big punches were landed by both fighters during the bout, with both \u00c1lvarez <\/strong>and Golovkin <\/strong>showing excellent chins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the tense build-up, both boxers showed each other respect after the fight.\u00a0

\u00c1lvarez <\/strong>made good use of his body attack, landing 46 compared to Golovkin’s <\/strong>six landed.\u00a0

The action see-sawed down the street but the pride of Jalisco closed strong to capture a majority decision and cement himself as the best middleweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
