Jason Robert Quigley\u00a0<\/strong>is an Irish professional boxer <\/a>born 19 May 1991. He held the\u00a0WBC-NABF middleweight title<\/strong>\u00a0from 2017 to 2019 and currently holds the\u00a0WBO<\/a>\u2013NABO middleweight title<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early years<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Quigley <\/strong>had an extremely promising amateur career, which saw him rise to number one in both the AIBA <\/strong>European and World amateur rankings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His place in the Ireland team had seemed secured for the 2016 Summer Olympics. However, he decided to turn professional instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2009, Quigley <\/strong>participated in the European Youth Championships<\/strong> in Szezecin; defeating Emil Ahmadov<\/strong> of Azerbaijan 6-1 in the 69 kg final, to take home gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quigley <\/strong>won gold at the 2011 ‘Gee Bee’ Multi-Nations tournament in Helsinki<\/strong>, Finland, defeating English fighter Anthony Ogogo<\/strong> 14-5 with an acclaimed performance in the final. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quigley boxed in the WSB <\/strong>for the 2011-2012 season, organized by the AIBA<\/strong>. The competition was designed to offer professional boxing without competitors having to forfeit their amateur status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Decade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In May 2012, Quigley <\/strong>competed at the ‘Algirdas Socikas’ Multi-Nations tournament in Kaunas<\/strong>, Lithuania, taking gold against Denmark’s Matouk Belai <\/strong>with another dominant 18-5 win in the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quigley <\/strong>won his next gold at the 2012 European U23 Championships<\/strong>, in Kaliningrad, Russia, where he met Germany’s Dennis Radovan<\/strong> in the final, winning by a 17-11 decision at Kaliningrad\u2019s Sports Palace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In March 2013, Quigley <\/strong>took gold at the \u00dast\u00ed nad Labem Grand Prix<\/strong> in the Czech Republic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In June, he won gold again in the European Amateur Boxing Championships<\/strong> in Minsk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Quigley’s <\/strong>final amateur medal came in October when he claimed silver at the World Amateur Boxing Championships<\/strong> in Almaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WBC-NABF Middleweight Title:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  • Quigley vs. Tapia<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    On 23 March, Golden Boy had its first televised card on ESPN following their multi-year deal with the network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The main event featured Quigley <\/strong>taking on Glen Tapia<\/strong>. It was Quigley’s <\/strong>first time ever headlining a nationally televised boxing card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Quigley <\/strong>rocked Tapia <\/strong>badly with a right hand to the chin in the first round, and again with a right hand to the body in the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At some point in the second round, Quigley <\/strong>broke his right hand on a shot to the top of Tapia’s <\/strong>head, which resulted in a torn tendon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From this point forward, Quigley <\/strong>could not be as effective with his right-hand punches, and it became a fight of attrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Quigley <\/strong>went back to boxing on the back foot and his superior technical skills earned him a wide unanimous decision (98-92, 99-91, 100-90).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Quigley vs. Freddy Hernandez:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Jason Quigley<\/strong> defended his NABF Middleweight <\/strong>Title with a 10-round unanimous decision victory against Freddy \u201cEl Riel\u201d Hernandez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This took place in the main event of the Oct. 18 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Quigley <\/strong>won the match in dominant fashion with the judges’ scores of 98-92, 98-92, and 99-91.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Quigley vs. Tureano Johnson:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Despite Johnson <\/strong>facing the stronger opposition of the two; Quigley <\/strong>was the favorite going into the fight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Johnson <\/strong>entered the bout winless in his previous two bouts, a loss to middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko<\/strong> and a draw against Fernando Castaneda<\/strong> on Feb. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Both fighters stood in the pocket from the opening bell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        It was an even bout until round four when Johnson\u2019s <\/strong>punches began to take their toll on Quigley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        After the end of the ninth round, Quigley\u2019s <\/strong>corner told referee Eddie Hernandez to stop the bout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Quigley vs. Shane Mosley Jr.:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          The Donegal middleweight <\/strong>squeezed past son-of-a-legend Shane Mosley<\/strong> Jr<\/strong> in an enthralling fight at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas\u2019s Mandalay Bay Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Quigley picked up a majority decision win and the WBO-NABO<\/strong> ranking title following a grueling contest in which he grew into the fight, using all his guts and guile in the closing rounds to grind out the victory down the stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          It was tight and certainly tense with many believing the American had the better of the first half and Quigley <\/strong>having the better of the second five rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The judges seemed to agree and backed up general continuous with their scoring of the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The 30-year-old was awarded the last five rounds by one judge and four of the last five stanza\u2019s by the other two proving his performance down the stretch was crucial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
