Devin Miles Haney<\/strong>\u00a0is an American professional boxer <\/a>born on November 17th, 1998 who has held the\u00a0WBC <\/a>lightweight\u00a0<\/strong>title since 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 2021, he is ranked as the world’s fourth-best active lightweight <\/strong>by The Ring magazine, Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and BoxRec and fifth by ESPN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an amateur, Haney<\/strong> won seven National titles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2015, aged 17, he became the youngest boxer to win the Youth World Championships in Reno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had an amateur record of 138\u20138 bouts before turning professional in 2015 at the age of 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boxing Profile \u2013 Devin Haney \u2013 Professional Career<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Debut and First Fights in his career:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Haney <\/strong>turned pro at the age of 17. But could not compete in the United States due to the minimum age regulation; so his first four fights were in Mexico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the regional level, he won the WBC Youth, IBF-USBA, IBF North American, WBC International, WBO Inter-Continental, and the WBA International lightweight <\/strong>titles as a professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 11, 2019, Haney <\/strong>dominated a very tough opponent in Xolisani Ndongeni <\/strong>on the way to a 10-round unanimous decision win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2019, Haney <\/strong>signed a co-promotional deal between his own company, Devin Haney<\/strong> Promotions, and British promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 25, 2019, Haney defeated Antonio Moran via a vicious seventh-round knockout. This was in his first match under the Matchroom banner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 13, 2019, Haney defeated Zaur Abdullaev to win the vacant WBC interim lightweight title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WBC Lightweight champion:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In October 2019, Haney <\/strong>became the youngest world champion in boxing when he was elevated as the WBC lightweight champion. This after previous WBC lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko<\/strong> was promoted to “Franchise Champion” by the WBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haney vs. Santiago<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

On the undercard of KSI vs. Logan Paul II<\/strong> in November 2019; Haney <\/strong>made his first title defense against Alfredo Santiago, and won by unanimous decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He injured his shoulder during the fight, requiring surgery that would keep him out until the summer of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He maintained the title “champion in recess.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haney vs. Gamboa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Haney <\/strong>made the second defense of his WBC lightweight title against former unified featherweight world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa<\/strong> on November 7, 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won by unanimous decision with scores of 120\u2013107, 120\u2013107, and 118\u2013109.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haney vs. Linares<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Seen by many as Haney’s <\/strong>toughest test of his career so far, Haney <\/strong>made the third defense of his WBC lightweight title against former three-weight world champion Jorge Linares<\/strong> on May 29, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won by unanimous decision with the judges scoring the bout 116\u2013112, 116\u2013112, 115\u2013113 in his favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haney <\/strong>controlled the action for most of the fight. However, Linares <\/strong>caught him with a powerful right-left combination toward the end of the tenth round. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haney <\/strong>survived the final two rounds largely by tying Linares <\/strong>up and negating his opponent’s attempts at trying to engage with him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crowd voiced their displeasure with what they perceived as excessive clinching by booing Haney when he jumped up on the ropes in celebration immediately after the final bell, as well as booing during the announcement of the official decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
