It is one of five invitational tournaments on the PGA Tour,\u00a0and it has been a long run for it, as the inaugural event was held 78\u00a0years ago in 1946.
The\u00a0Charles Schwab Corporation, whose corporate headquarters relocated to the nearby suburb of\u00a0Westlake\u00a0in 2021,\u00a0became the\u00a0title sponsor of the event\u00a0for a four-year deal starting in 2019.
Invitational tournaments have smaller fields\u00a0and have more freedom than full-field open tournaments in determining which players are eligible to participate in their event, as invitational tournaments have slightly different criteria for player eligibility in the PGA Tour Priority Ranking System.\u00a0Furthermore, unlike full-field open tournaments, invitational tournaments do not offer open qualifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PGA Tour returns to Colonial Country Club for the Charles Schwab Challenge \u2013 the longest-running host venue among non-majors on the PGA Tour schedule. Scheffler\u00a0leads the way at Colonial. He recorded his 10th top-10 finish in 11 events\u00a0so far\u00a0in 2024 at the PGA Championship \u2013 a week unlike any other for him. But for this year, the best in the world are set to take on a restored and renovated Colonial. The effort began the day after last\u00a0year\u2019s\u00a0Charles Schwab Challenge, and the crew has been sprinting to the finish as they await the\u00a0Tour\u2019s\u00a0best to tee it up this week.
The field is chock-full of notable names ready to take on Gil Hanse and Jim\u00a0Wagner\u2019s\u00a0newest effort \u2013 a nod to the original Perry Maxwell design with plenty of modern touches.
Led by the Texas two-step of Scottie Scheffler and past winner Jordan Spieth,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0set\u00a0to be another great week in the Lone Star State.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n–<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Collin Morikawa,\u00a0fresh off a T4 at the PGA Championship,<\/a> returns to Colonial.\u00a0Morikawa has never missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge, with his highest-ever finish coming in 2020 when he finished runner-up.
Emiliano Grillo\u00a0returns to defend, looking to become the first back-to-back winner at Colonial since Ben Hogan in the 1950s.
Spieth\u00a0is hoping\u00a0for\u00a0a nice\u00a0bounce-back at the Charles Schwab Challenge after missing the cut a year ago.\u00a0Before that, Spieth finished in the top 10 in seven out of eight years. He has three runner-ups at Colonial and a win in 2016.<\/strong>
A pair of past FedExCup champions, Billy Horschel\u00a0and\u00a0Justin Rose,\u00a0are looking\u00a0to capitalize on their momentum from the PGA Championship.\u00a0<\/strong>Horschel finished T8 at Valhalla Golf Club \u2013 his first major championship top-10 result since 2013 \u2013 and Rose finished T6. Rose won at Colonial in 2018.
Tom Kim, who now lives in Dallas, will\u00a0make his\u00a0debut at Colonial.
