That title came at 8-9 in a three-way tie, and it ended a playoff drought dating to 2017. Dave Canales returns for a third season with continuity across his staff. Bryce Young is coming off the best year of his career, with 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and Tetairoa McMillan won Offensive Rookie of the Year alongside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The underlying numbers are less flattering. Carolina ranked 27th in yards per pass play and its point differential suggested closer to a six-win team. Young is playing on his fifth-year option with no extension in sight, which makes this a contract year for a quarterback the franchise still has not fully decided on. General manager Dan Morgan spent aggressively on defense to close that gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-offensive-line-analysis-4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offensive Line Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the biggest problem on the roster right now. Carolina is missing both starting tackles heading into September. Ikem Ekwonu ruptured his patellar tendon in the wild-card loss to the Rams, and Taylor Moton is out with blood clots. Neither has a firm return date, and both look likely to miss at least the start of the year. Morgan responded by signing Rasheed Walker in free agency and drafting Monroe Freeling. The interior is a genuine strength, with Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt among the better guard pairs in the league. But asking a rebuilt tackle duo to protect a quarterback of Young&#8217;s size is the single largest risk to Carolina&#8217;s season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-defensive-line-analysis-6\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defensive Line Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morgan attacked a front that finished 27th in sack rate. Jaelan Phillips arrived on a four-year, $120 million contract to fix the pass rush, and he is the most expensive edge addition in franchise history. Derrick Brown remains the anchor inside, and he is one of the better run-stopping interior linemen in football. Devin Lloyd joins at linebacker after a season PFF graded third among 88 qualifiers. Ejiro Evero now has real talent to work with for the first time in Charlotte. Whether it holds up on third down is the question, because this defense ranked next to last in third-down success rate a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-2026-nfl-season-8\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2026 NFL Season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"aioseo-week-1-9\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Week 1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Bears at Carolina Panthers | Sunday, September 13 | 1:00 PM ET | Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carolina opens at home as a slight underdog. The Panthers sit at +120 on the moneyline against Chicago&#8217;s -142, with the spread at 2.5 points and the total at 45.5. That total is one of the higher numbers on the Week 1 board, and it reflects two offenses the market expects to score. Chicago arrives off an 11-6 season and an NFC North title under Ben Johnson, with Caleb Williams entering his third year as the starter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home field and division-title momentum are not enough to make Carolina the favorite here, and the tackle situation explains why. Johnson&#8217;s defense will attack a patchwork edge of the line early. Carolina needs Phillips to make the same kind of impact on the other side, because a shootout at 45.5 points is a game Young has to win with his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-odds-to-win-division-and-super-bowl-13\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Odds to Win Division and Super Bowl<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Odds to Win NFC South:<\/strong> +330<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Odds to Win Super Bowl:<\/strong> +8000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-predictions-16\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Predictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Overall Record:<\/strong> The Panthers project to finish around 8-9 again, in a division no one is favored to run away with<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Playoff Chances:<\/strong> In the mix, but dependent on the offensive tackles returning healthy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Super Bowl Chances:<\/strong> A long shot priced alongside the rest of the NFC South<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carolina has the roster to defend its division title. Morgan spent real money on the front seven, McMillan is a legitimate number one receiver, and Canales has continuity that Atlanta and New Orleans do not. What holds this team back is the same thing that has held it back for three years. Young has never proven he can carry an offense, and he will start the season behind two replacement tackles. If Ekwonu and Moton come back by midseason, the Panthers are the team to beat here.
