After reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2024, Washington fell to 5-12 last season and lost 10 of its final 12 games. The biggest reason for optimism is the return of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is entering his third season and is expected to be fully healthy. Washington has also added veteran receiver talent and selected Sonny Styles seventh overall in the draft, giving the defense a versatile young playmaker. The biggest challenge is rebuilding a team that struggled on both sides of the ball in 2025. The Commanders were 24th in scoring defense and 28th in yards allowed per game across the previous two seasons, according to ESPN. The roster is more talented than last year&#8217;s record suggests, but Washington has a very difficult opening stretch that includes Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle and San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-offensive-line-analysis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offensive Line Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commanders&#8217; offensive line has become a major concern heading into Week 1. Washington invested heavily in Laremy Tunsil, but he suffered a torn triceps during training camp and is expected to miss significant time. Brandon Coleman has stepped into the left tackle position and now has to protect Jayden Daniels against some of the league&#8217;s best pass rushers. This is especially important because Daniels&#8217; mobility can sometimes mask protection problems, but Washington cannot rely on him constantly escaping pressure. If Coleman and the rest of the line can stabilize, Daniels has enough weapons to revive the offense. If the protection collapses, Washington&#8217;s season could become difficult very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-defensive-line-analysis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defensive Line Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commanders are trying to build a younger and more athletic defensive front. Washington has made significant investments in young defenders while adding veterans with upside. Sonny Styles is perhaps the most interesting piece because his versatility allows Washington to use him as a linebacker, coverage player or box defender. Joshua Josephs is another young defender generating attention during camp. The Commanders need the front seven to improve substantially after struggling to consistently pressure quarterbacks and stop opposing offenses. The upside is that the defense is now faster and younger, but there is still a major gap between potential and proven NFL production.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-2024-nfl-season\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2026 NFL Season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Week 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles | Sunday, September 13 | 4:25 PM ET | Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington has arguably the toughest possible opening matchup: a road game against the defending division champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current market has Philadelphia favored by roughly 5.5 points, with the Eagles around -238 ML and Washington approximately +195. The total sits around 46.5 in the latest Fox Sports market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The matchup becomes even more difficult because Washington&#8217;s offensive line is already dealing with the loss of Laremy Tunsil. The Commanders need Jayden Daniels to create explosive plays, but Philadelphia&#8217;s defense is built to punish mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington can absolutely cover if Daniels is healthy and plays at his 2024 level, but Philadelphia remains the safer side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prediction: Eagles -5.5. Projected score: Philadelphia 27, Washington 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best betting angle: Washington +5.5 if the line reaches +6; otherwise pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-odds-to-win-division-and-super-bowl\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Odds to Win Division and Super Bowl<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Odds to Win NFC East: +460 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Odds to Win Super Bowl: +6000 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Win Total: 7.5 \u2014 Over -125 \/ Under +105<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-predictions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Predictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall Record: Washington projects around 7-10, with 8-9 representing the optimistic scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Playoff Chances: Long shot. DraftKings had Washington at approximately +215 to make the playoffs in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Super Bowl Chances: Very long shot, although +6000 gives them considerably more upside than the Giants&#8217; +7000 because Washington has a proven high-level quarterback ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commanders are a fascinating bounce-back candidate, but the market may be asking bettors to pay for a rebound that hasn&#8217;t happened yet. Jayden Daniels is the reason to believe. The defense and offensive line are the reasons to hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing to watch is whether Washington can survive the opening month.
