This week, the Miami Open will take place, one of the ATP and WTA Tour\u2019s Masters 1000 tournaments, featuring the world’s best tennis players competing for almost two weeks on the hard courts of the Hard Rock Stadium.

The tournament\u2019s qualifying draw will be played on March 17 and 18, with the main draw starting on Wednesday, March 19, and the final on Sunday, March 30. However, it will not feature the defending champion, Jannik Sinner, who has been suspended for doping.

The Italian, currently ranked world No. 1, is the only top player missing from the event, as all 32 seeded players rank between No. 2 and No. 33 in the ATP rankings.

On the women\u2019s side, Danielle Collins, the surprise 2024 champion, will be able to defend her title. The tournament favorites are world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek. 2025 Miami Open Top Contenders <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let’s focus on the men’s draw. With Jannik Sinner absent, the top favorite to win is Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard recently fell in the semifinals of Indian Wells in three sets against Britain’s Jack Draper, who went on to win the title.

So far in 2025, Alcaraz has only reached one final, at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, where he claimed his 17th career title. He is no stranger to winning in Miami, having lifted the trophy in 2022\u2014his first of what is now five Masters 1000 titles. This season, he holds a 15-3 record.<\/strong>

Second on our list is the legendary Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is tied with Andre Agassi as the most successful player in Miami Open history, with six titles each. His first victory came in 2003, highlighting Djokovic’s incredible career. However, his last Miami title was in 2016, and he hasn’t competed in the tournament since 2019.

At 37, age and injuries have increasingly taken their toll on Djokovic, which has been evident in 2025. He was forced to retire in the Australian Open semifinals, and his record this year stands at seven wins and four losses.<\/strong> Considering that he failed to win an ATP title in 2024 (though he did secure Olympic gold), we might be witnessing the final chapters of his career\u2014which makes him even more dangerous.

Rounding out our top contenders is the tournament\u2019s No. 1 seed, Alexander Zverev. The German reached the Australian Open final this year but was dominated in three sets by Sinner. Since then, he has struggled, suffering early exits in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Acapulco, and Indian Wells.

Brazil was the only stop where he managed to win more than one match (two). In his most recent tournament, the Indian Wells Masters 1000, he lost his opening match to Tallon Griekspoor.<\/strong> His best Miami Open performance came last year when he reached the semifinals before falling to Bulgaria\u2019s Grigor Dimitrov. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 Miami Open Outside picks <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One player who is always a contender but runs out of steam in the end is Daniil Medvedev. The Russian won this tournament in 2023, defeating Sinner in the final, and is coming off a semifinal appearance at Indian Wells, where he lost to Holger Rune. He is in the same side of the draw as Alcaraz and Djokovic.

Now, let\u2019s talk about a local player: Taylor Fritz. The San Diego, California native had a fantastic 2024, winning two titles and reaching three other finals, including his first Grand Slam final at the US Open.<\/strong> However, 2025 has not been kind to him, as he has suffered early exits in every tournament he has played so far. On the bright side, hard courts are his preferred surface, having won five of his eight career titles and finished runner-up in seven of eight finals on this surface.

And finally, we can\u2019t overlook the most recent Indian Wells Masters 1000 champion: Jack Draper. The British world No. 7 claimed his first Masters 1000 title and was also the runner-up just days earlier at the ATP 500 in Doha, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in the final. With that momentum, it\u2019s safe to say that Draper is one of the most in-form players on tour right now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
