We\u2019ve reached the third Major of the year: the U.S. Open, which will feature the world\u2019s best golfers at Oakmont Country Club, one of the most challenging and historic courses in the world, competing in the 125th edition of the tournament.

From June 12 to 15, 156 golfers will assemble at this course in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, which plays as a par 70 and stretches 7,342 yards. Oakmont Country Club was founded in 1903, and this will be the 11th time it hosts the U.S. Open.

The most recent champion is Bryson DeChambeau, who claimed his second title in this tournament. Rory McIlroy, who won in 2011 with a record score of 268 strokes (-16 under par), has finished runner-up in the last two editions, both times by just a single stroke.

The most successful players in U.S. Open history are Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, and Willie Anderson, each with four titles. Notably, the Scottish-born Anderson won the event three times consecutive from 1903 to 1905. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 U.S. Open Top Contenders <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The top contender is current world number one, Scottie Scheffler. After a start to the year where he consistently came up just short of winning, he\u2019s broken through, winning three of the last four tournaments he\u2019s played, including the PGA Championship.

The American golfer has 16 career titles, three of which are Majors, although he has yet to win the U.S. Open, finishing second in 2022 and third in 2023. <\/strong>In 2025, he has nine top 10 finishes in 12 tournaments, placing in the top 10 in the last seven\u2014three wins, one runner-up, two fourth-place finishes, and once in eight-place.

In second place, we have this year\u2019s other Major winner: Rory McIlroy. Champion at the Masters and completing the Grand Slam, the Northern Irishman is aiming to lift this title again after coming very close the past two years, losing by just one stroke. <\/strong>

In 2025, he also won The Players Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. However, the European golfer has had two disappointing results in his last two tournaments: he finished 47th at the PGA Championship but missed the cut this past weekend at the RBC Canadian Open.

Finally, we include the defending champion, Bryson DeChambeau. A winner in 2020 and 2024, the American has had strong results this year in the two previous Majors, which are the only PGA Tour<\/a> events he has played.<\/strong> He finished fifth at the Masters and second at the PGA Championship. Focusing only on the LIV Tour, he won in Korea last month, was runner-up in Mexico City, finished fourth in Virginia this past weekend, fifth in Miami, and sixth in Riyadh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 U.S. Open Outside picks <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the players with strong aspirations to win the title is Jon Rahm. Like DeChambeau, the Spaniard has only played the two Majors on the PGA Tour, with his best result being an eighth-place finish at the PGA Championship.<\/strong> He already won this Major in 2021, and in 2025, he has finished in the Top 10 in all eight LIV Tournaments he has played, with a second-place finish in Riyadh being his best result.

One of the best golfers in 2025 and currently in great form is Ben Griffin. The 29-year-old American claimed his first two titles this year: the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the end of April and the Charles Schwab Challenge at the end of May.<\/strong>He also has three Top 10 finishes in recent tournaments, including the one he won, an eighth place at the PGA Championship, and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Tournament.

Lastly, we\u2019ll place a small bet on Dustin Johnson. His last PGA Tour title was the 2020 Masters, but since then, he has also secured one victory on the European Tour and three in the LIV Golf League. In 2025, he has only played the two Majors on the PGA Tour and missed the cut in both, but we\u2019re including him in this list because he won the U.S. Open in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prize bag <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This PGA Tour event featured a total purse of $21.5 million back in 2024 and has yet to announce the amount for this year. The champion took home a prize of $4,300,000. Additionally, the winner will earn 750 FedEx Cup points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
