The exercise is worth repeating now, because the preseason did what it always does: it told us almost nothing about who is good and a great deal about who is available.

Two teams have moved more than any others. Dallas has climbed eleven places on the strength of being the most organized team in exhibition football. New England has fallen nine places, largely because its own head coach said the roster is not deep enough.

At Gambyl, you can follow the entire NFL season. Previous position in brackets.

1. Los Angeles Rams (1)

Still +550, still the only team on the board under +1000, and nothing in August changed the calculation. Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, and a Stafford extension form the most talented roster in football.

The caution is that three important pieces are managing something: Garrett has knee swelling, Puka Nacua has a core muscle injury, and left tackle Alaric Jackson has not practised since July with blood clots. Week 1 is in Melbourne.

2. Buffalo Bills (6)

The healthiest genuine contender in the league, which in this particular August is worth four places.

Buffalo is 10-1, and Josh Allen remains a top three quarterback. The receiver question remains unanswered: D.J. Moore and Keon Coleman both picked knocks in the preseason opener, but the roster is deep enough that Geno Stone and Mike Danna, both recent starters elsewhere, may not survive cuts.

3. Baltimore Ravens (3)

Unmoved at 10-1. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, a rebuilt center position, and the same caveat as every year: this is a health question, not a talent question.

The AFC North remains brutal.

4. Denver Broncos (2)

They lost 33-13 to Green Bay after entering the game 7-0 straight up in preseason home games since 2020. That is why they dropped two places.

The center position is why. Luke Wattenberg only returned to practice last week, Alex Forsyth has been out, and third-stringer Michael Deiter is gone for the season with torn quadriceps. Everything else (third-best scoring defense last year, Bo Nix healthy, Jaylen Waddle added) still points upward.

5. Seattle Seahawks (4)

The defending champions open the season at home against New England in a Super Bowl rematch as 3.5-point favorites.

They are also unable to field a running back. Kenneth Walker III left, and Zach Charbonnet, Jadarian Price and Emanuel Wilson were all injured. Six of Seattle’s eight players on the availability report have soft-tissue injuries, which is usually a workload story rather than bad luck.

6. Philadelphia Eagles (7)

16-1, and the receiver room is still the problem. Makai Lemon cannot shake recurring hamstring trouble, DeVonta Smith only returned to practice recently, and Cooper DeJean has been out with a groin injury.

The rest of the roster remains good enough to carry them. It should not have to.

7. Kansas City Chiefs (13)

The biggest correction on this list, and the reason is simple: Patrick Mahomes is healthy and practising, eight months after tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee.

He sat out the entire preseason as a precaution and is targeting Week 1 against Denver on September 14. Ranking Kansas City 13th in early August was a health judgement. That judgement has been overtaken by events.

Rashee Rice’s situation remains the concern nobody wants to discuss.

Attention New Players!

Bet on Sports legally at the Gambyl Betting Exchange. Dallas Cowboys (19)

The biggest riser in the league, and it is not close.

Dallas went 2-0 in the preseason and looked like the most prepared team in exhibition football. They beat Seattle 17-7 with 338 total yards and 11 of 15 on third down, then routed Arizona 34-13 while outgaining them 418 to 320. Joe Milton went 9 of 13 for 176 yards and three total touchdowns, turning the backup competition into a formality.

Preseason organization historically means very little. It is still the only thing August measures cleanly, and nobody did it better.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (10)

Burrow is back, the schedule is among the easiest in the league, and Zac Taylor still has no swing tackle. “I think that’s still pretty open,” he said after the Chicago game.

The numbers behind that: Orlando Brown Jr. allowed nine sacks over 733 pass-blocking snaps last season; Amarius Mims allowed 35 pressures over 694. Expect Cincinnati to be busy on the waiver wire.

10. Houston Texans (9)

Unchanged in substance. C.J. Stroud still has no extension, and the front office still wants to see the rookie-year version again before committing.

11. Detroit Lions (15)

Both offensive line competitions remain open with cuts approaching, but the roster is talented and the preseason produced no disasters.

Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, center Cade Mays, and running back Isiah Pacheco have all been managing issues. Manageable rather than serious.

12. Green Bay Packers (16)

Beating Denver 33-13 as a six-point underdog was the most emphatic preseason result of the month.

It does not change the fundamental problem: Micah Parsons is targeting a Week 6 return after tearing his ACL and meniscus, and Green Bay must survive five games without its best defensive player. Javon Bullard, Carrington Valentine, and Lukas Van Ness are also out.

13. Los Angeles Chargers (14)

One major injury, and it is the wrong one. Rashawn Slater, who missed all of last season with a ruptured patellar tendon, has been out since early August with what the club calls a flare-up in the same knee.

He is the second most important player on this offence behind Justin Herbert. Mike McDaniel’s arrival means little if Herbert is running for his life.

14. New England Patriots (5)

The steepest fall on the board, and the head coach made the case himself.

“I do not think we have a very deep team,” Mike Vrabel told reporters, explaining why he protected his starters throughout the preseason. New England added A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Dre’Mont Jones, and Kevin Byard to the first eleven and very little behind it.

Add the sixth-hardest schedule by opponents’ win percentage after an easy one last year, and a dislocated thumb for Brown in joint practice with Philadelphia. The starting eleven is still excellent. Everything around it is thin.

15. Chicago Bears (8)

Chicago signed Coby Bryant to a three-year, $40 million deal to anchor a rebuilt secondary. He hyperextended his knee on August 3, had surgery on the 7th, and is out four to six months; realistically back in mid-December if the Bears reach the playoffs.

Around him: Kyler Gordon calf, Luther Burden III groin, Kyle Monangai with a hyperextended knee costing multiple weeks, and Ozzy Trapilo not ready for the season after patellar tendon surgery. Caleb Williams’ blind side is unresolved.

Attention New Players!

Bet on Sports legally at the Gambyl Betting Exchange. Ricky Pearsall is out for the season. Week 1 is a 32-hour round trip to Melbourne to face the Super Bowl favorite.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars (11)

The offensive line has not settled. Minnesota Vikings (17)

Kyler Murray is the starter of Week 1. The open question is whether J.J. McCarthy is even the backup, with Carson Wentz on the roster and reports suggesting Minnesota could field trade calls.

McCarthy completed 50% against Baltimore, throwing a pinpoint 50-yard laser to Tai Felton and then missing a wide-open Myles Price in the end zone. That is the whole story in one drive.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (20)

Vita Vea signed a one-year, $30 million extension after requesting a trade, which removes a real distraction.

Tristan Wirfs tweaked a hamstring in July and did not practice in pads until late August. Emeka Egbuka may not be ready for Week 1 with a toe injury.

20. Carolina Panthers (18)

Depth is being tested harder than any roster in football. Chuba Hubbard is week-to-week with what Dave Canales called a legitimate hamstring injury, Nic Scourton and Chris Brazzell II are on IR, and both starting tackles (Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton) are expected to miss regular-season time.

21. Indianapolis Colts (23)

Daniel Jones has continued to be impressed in his return from the Achilles injury, which is the single best piece of news any team in this range received in August.

22. New York Giants (21)

Malik Nabers is ramping back up and looks on track for Week 1. Everything else is a problem: all three starting cornerbacks have missed practice, Roy Robertson-Harris tore his Achilles and is out for the season, and center John Michael Schmitz has been in concussion protocol.

23. New Orleans Saints (25)

Rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson will miss roughly two months with a hamstring injury and is expected to open on injured reserve. Bryan Bresee is believed to have torn an ACL.
