Brighton put four past an Aston Villa side priced at 5\/2 for the top four. Liverpool needed a 99th-minute penalty to draw at Newcastle. And the five clubs we picked to surprise lost four of their five opening fixtures.

One weekend is not a Premier League season. It is, however, a reasonable moment to check whether the reasoning behind a prediction still holds.

Here is what the opening week changed, and what it did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Our Five Picks Started<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We named Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Bournemouth and Fulham as the clubs most likely to beat their pre-season pricing. Being straight about the results:

Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace \u2014 correct.<\/strong> The one that landed. We argued the second season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium would matter and that Merlin Rohl would add the creativity missing last year. A clean sheet and a comfortable home win is the ideal start.

Ipswich 2-1 Sunderland \u2014 wrong, and it stings.<\/strong> We called Sunderland’s 2\/1 relegation price the most disrespectful number in the market. Losing away to a fellow promoted side in week one is the worst possible answer to that argument.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds \u2014 wrong, and it was our strongest call.<\/strong> We said Glasner was the best manager in the group, with a squad that fitted him and no European football to distract from it. Losing at home to an unremarkable Leeds doesn’t look like that thesis.

Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth \u2014 a defeat that reads better than the result.<\/strong> Marco Rose’s side lost to a Josko Gvardiol goal in the 91st minute at the Etihad. Taking Manchester City to stoppage time away from home is not evidence against them.

Fulham 2-3 Chelsea \u2014 the same category.<\/strong> \u00c1lvaro Arbeloa’s first Premier League match ended in defeat, but Fulham scored twice against a Chelsea side under Xabi Alonso and played on the front foot throughout. Gonzalo Garc\u00eda scored on his debut<\/strong>; the first Fulham player to do so in the Premier League since Chris David in May 2014.

The honest scoreline: one win, four defeats.<\/strong> The honest reading: two of those defeats came against Manchester City and Chelsea and were competitive. The two that could damage the argument are Sunderland at Ipswich and Forest at home to Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Matchweek 1 Actually Told Us<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hull City 2-0 Manchester United<\/strong> is the result of the weekend by a distance. The shortest-priced relegation favourite in the division beat United at home, and it is hard to say which club it says more about.

Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa<\/strong> is nearly as significant. Villa returned as Europa League holders and fourth-placed finishers, priced at 5\/2 for the top four, and were dismantled. Their summer was defined by generating more than \u00a3100 million in profit while losing Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans. Rogers, incidentally, scored on his debut for Chelsea against Fulham the following night.

Arsenal 3-0 Coventry<\/strong> was exactly what a defending champion does to a promoted side. Havertz, Saka, and \u00d8degaard scored, and the game was over by half-time.

Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool<\/strong> required a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty in the 99th minute. Andoni Iraola’s first competitive fixture ended with a point rescued at the death, which is either character or a warning depending on your view.

Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth<\/strong> gave Enzo Maresca a winning start via a stoppage-time goal. Not convincing. Three points regardless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Revised Predictions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Title: Arsenal.<\/strong> Nothing has changed. They were 6\/4 favourites, and the opening performance was routine. Defending a title is the hard part, but no rival did anything in week one to suggest they are ready to take it.

The biggest riser: Brighton.<\/strong> Four goals against a top-four contender is the sort of statement that reprices a season. They were 12\/1 for the top four before a ball was kicked. That number will not last if they follow it up.

The biggest faller: Aston Villa.<\/strong> Losing 4-0 having sold Rogers and Tielemans invites the question their summer already raised; whether last season’s fourth place was sustainable or a one-off convergence. One match does not answer it. It does not help either.

Relegation: we are moving off Hull.<\/strong> They were 3\/10, the shortest price in the market, and they have already beaten Manchester United. That does not make them safe, but a team capable of that result is not the worst side in the division. Ipswich beating Sunderland points in the same direction: the promoted clubs are better than the market assumed, same as last year.

The surprise package: still Everton.<\/strong> The only one of our five to win, and the one whose case never depended on a manager gamble or a fixture quirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Are Not Changing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sunderland.<\/strong> Seventh place and European qualification last season did not evaporate in ninety minutes at Portman Road. The 2\/1 relegation price was wrong on 20 August, and it is still wrong now. If anything, a poor start makes it better value.

Nottingham Forest.<\/strong> This one requires more honesty. Losing at home to Leeds is a bad result for a team we called the most likely to outperform. But the argument was structural; a proven Premier League manager with a full week to coach and no European football, and one match does not undo that. We are holding, with the caveat that a second home defeat would change things.

Fulham.<\/strong> The bet was always entirely on Arbeloa. Scoring twice against Chelsea with a debutant striker on the scoresheet is a reasonable first data point.

The nine-new-managers thesis.<\/strong> Arbeloa, Alonso, Maresca, Iraola, Glasner, Sage, Rose, Jaissle and Mora all took charge of a competitive fixture for the first time this weekend. Alonso and Maresca won. Iraola drew. Glasner, Arbeloa and Rose lost. A market priced in May cannot account for that, and five weeks from now it will be considerably clearer who was mispriced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matchweek 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fixtures that matter for everything above: Sunderland host Fulham on 30 August<\/strong>, which is immediately a significant match for two of our five, and Aston Villa face Arsenal on 31 August<\/strong>; a brutal follow-up for a side that just conceded four.

Forest need a response. Hull get to prove the United result was not an accident. And Brighton will find out whether four goals against Villa was a statement or a Villa problem.
