You pick who wins. Nothing else matters: method, round, scorecards, none of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reading American odds.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>minus<\/strong> number is the favourite, and it tells you what you must stake to win $100. Not to profit, to break even. Every time you back a heavy favourite, you are claiming the market has underrated a fighter who is already expected to win four times out of five.<br><br>That is a high bar, and MMA is the worst sport in which to try clearing it.<br><br><strong>The bookmaker&#8217;s cut.<\/strong> Add up the implied probabilities on both sides of any fight, and you will get more than 100%. If a fight is priced -450 and +320, that is 81.8% plus 23.8%, or <strong>105.6%<\/strong>. The extra 5.6% is the margin. It exists on every fight, on both sides, and it is why breaking even requires being right more often than the raw probabilities suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 2: Method of Victory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Method markets ask how the fight ends, not just who wins. The standard options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>KO\/TKO<\/strong> \u2014 strikes, doctor stoppage, corner stoppage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submission<\/strong> \u2014 tap, technical submission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decision<\/strong> \u2014 the judges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fighter-specific<\/strong> \u2014 &#8220;Song by KO\/TKO&#8221;, &#8220;Lawrence by submission&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why the prices look attractive.<\/strong> A fighter at -300 on the moneyline might be +150 to win by knockout. The same outcome you already expected, at more than double the return.<br><br><strong>Why they are harder than they look.<\/strong> You now need to be right about two things instead of one. Our Shanghai card shows both sides of this clearly.<br><br><strong>It worked once.<\/strong> We took <strong>Asakura inside the distance<\/strong> rather than his -300 moneyline, reasoning that the moneyline offered little and the finish market was where the value sat. He knocked out Aoriqileng 34 seconds into the second round. Right fighter, right method, better price.<br><br><strong>It failed once, expensively.<\/strong> We took <strong>Nurmagomedov by decision<\/strong>. Song won by knockout. That bet was wrong twice over (wrong fighter and wrong method), and either error alone would have lost it.<br><br><strong>The rule.<\/strong> A method bet is not a better version of a moneyline. It is a different bet with a lower hit rate and a higher price, and the price exists precisely because the hit rate is lower. Take one when you have a specific reason (a grappler against someone with poor takedown defence, a heavy hitter against a fighter with a documented chin problem), not because the number looks nicer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 3: Props and Totals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Round totals.<\/strong> The most common MMA prop. A three-round fight is typically set at <strong>Over\/Under 1.5<\/strong> or <strong>2.5 rounds<\/strong>; five-round main events go higher.<br><br>Read the half-round carefully. Under 2.5 rounds means the fight must end before the 2:30 mark of round three. The half exists specifically to remove ties.<br><br>We used this market on the Shanghai card, sort of. On the Liu Ce fight we wrote: <em>&#8220;no play until the line posts: if you want the fight, the under is the more defensible position; this is unlikely to see the judges.&#8221;<\/em> Liu Ce knocked out Levi Rodrigues Jr. at 4:26 of the first. The read was right; we simply never posted a side.<br><br><strong>Fight to go the distance: yes or no.<\/strong> A cleaner version of the same idea, and often the better bet. You are wagering on whether the judges are involved, without needing to be right about who wins. In a division full of finishers, &#8220;no&#8221; is frequently more predictable than either fighter&#8217;s moneyline.<br><br><strong>Exact round betting.<\/strong> The longest shot on the board and priced accordingly. Interesting, rarely sensible.<br><br><strong>Novelty props<\/strong>: Fight of the Night, Performance of the Night bonuses; depend on a judgment made by the promotion after the event. Treat these as entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Our Own Card Should Teach You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We published <strong>thirteen free picks<\/strong> for UFC Shanghai. They went <strong>4-8<\/strong>, with one no-play. That is a bad night, and the reason is more useful than the number.<br><br><strong>All eight losses were essentially the same mistake.<\/strong> We leaned on home advantage across the card. We took Xiong Jingnan at +180 as &#8220;a fighter of her calibre at plus money in front of her own crowd.&#8221; We took Ding Meng at +115 on the logic of &#8220;the free points on the man the building wants to win.&#8221; We took Xiao Long at -300 because &#8220;the crowd, the experience and the price all point the same way.&#8221;<br><br>Xiong was knocked out by a head kick. Xiao Long was stopped in sixty seconds. Ding Meng lost a decision. Yan Xiaonan was finished inside a round.<br><br><strong>Crowd support is not a handicapping factor.<\/strong> It does not fight. We treated it as one across seven separate bouts, and it cost us the card.<br><br>And the one Chinese fighter we bet against (Song Yadong, at plus money, in his own building) produced the knockout of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Mistakes That Empty an MMA Bankroll<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Betting the name instead of the price.<\/strong> A famous fighter at -450 is not a good bet because he is famous. He is a bad bet unless you think he wins more than 82% of the time.<br><br><strong>Parlaying favourites to manufacture a price.<\/strong> Stacking three -300 shots to reach a respectable number is the most reliable way to lose money in this sport. Each leg has a real chance of ending in one punch, and the parlay needs all of them.<br><br><strong>Ignoring the weigh-in.<\/strong> Three fighters missed weight on the Shanghai card. A missed weight tells you about a fighter&#8217;s camp, their recovery, and often their durability that night. It is free information published the day before, and most bettors never look.<br><br><strong>Chasing method markets for the better number.<\/strong> Covered above. The price is higher because you are less likely to be right.<br><br><strong>Treating a bad card as bad luck.<\/strong> Our 4-8 was not variance. It was one flawed assumption applied eight times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Staking: The Only Part That Is Not Optional<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MMA is the highest-variance major sport available to bet on. Every fight is single elimination, and any fight can end in one exchange, regardless of who is better.<br><br>That reality dictates the staking approach.<br><br><strong>Use units.<\/strong> Decide a fixed stake (<strong>1% to 2% of your total bankroll<\/strong>) and treat it as the standard bet. On a \u20ac500 bankroll, that is \u20ac5 to \u20ac10 per fight.<br><br><strong>Do not bet a full card.<\/strong> Thirteen bets on one event is not a betting strategy; it is exposure. We posted thirteen picks because that is editorial coverage of a full card; it is not how anyone should stake a night.<br><br><strong>Never increase stakes to recover.<\/strong> After a 4-8 card, the instinct is to raise the unit next week. Learn to convert it, and most decisions answer themselves.<br><br>If a fighter is -450, you are claiming he wins more than 82% of the time in a sport where a single uppercut ends the argument. If a fighter is +180, you are claiming he wins more than 36% of the time, which, in MMA, is a far more common thing to be right about.<br><br>The market is not always correct. It was wrong about Umar Nurmagomedov.
