Five days ago we wrote that Pittsburgh might keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster and would have to cut somewhere else to afford it.

They kept four quarterbacks. The somewhere else was a first-round offensive tackle.

The rosters are now final across the NFL AFC North division, and cutdown day is the most honest thing a front office does all year. Teams can say anything in August. What they keep tells you what they actually believe.

Here is the division as it actually stands, eight days out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltimore Ravens \u2014 The Decision Nobody Noticed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Baltimore’s most important roster move was one they declined to make.

Nnamdi Madubuike was not placed on injured reserve<\/strong>, which means the Pro Bowl defensive tackle is eligible for the opening four games rather than ruled out. For a defence that generated only 30 sacks last season<\/strong>, that is not a depth question. It is the difference between a pass rush and a problem.

The rest of the case is unchanged and still the strongest in the division. Lamar Jackson is the best quarterback here. Derrick Henry is still beside him. Trey Hendrickson was signed away from Cincinnati to line up alongside Roquan Smith and Kyle Hamilton.

The concern is also unchanged.<\/strong> Baltimore’s win total sits at 11.5<\/strong> while power-rating models project them closer to 9.3<\/strong>. That gap has not narrowed. Ethan Pocic, Nate Wiggins, Marlon Humphrey, and Zay Flowers all spent August managing injuries, and Jesse Minter is a first-year head coach.

Prediction: 10-7, division winners.<\/strong> Best roster, most stable situation, wrong price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pittsburgh Steelers \u2014 Trading a First-Round Tackle in September<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The move of the week across the entire league, and it says a great deal.

Pittsburgh sent Broderick Jones to Dallas<\/strong>, receiving 2027 third- and sixth-round picks while attaching a 2027 fourth-rounder of their own to make it work. Read that carefully: the Steelers paid a pick to move a player they drafted 14th overall three years ago.

The reasoning is defensible. Jones suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 12 last year and underwent spinal fusion surgery. He was medically cleared for camp and then struggled badly, allowing three sacks across 92 pass-blocking reps<\/strong> in camp and preseason. Pittsburgh had already declined his fifth-year option, so he was heading for free agency regardless.

The replacement is the worry.<\/strong> Max Iheanachor, the 21st overall pick in this year’s draft, now takes over at right tackle, and he missed over a week of August with injury. Pittsburgh is starting a rookie tackle in front of a 42-year-old quarterback who has not taken a live snap since January.

Because that remains the defining fact. Aaron Rodgers did not play a single preseason snap.<\/strong> Mike McCarthy repeatedly said he wanted him on the field, then rested him twice, including through a 17-0 shutout by the Jets.

Add a secondary in which Jalen Ramsey opened on PUP, Joey Porter Jr. has been managing a back issue, and Jaquan Brisker missed time, and the margin is thin.

Prediction: 8-9.<\/strong> Models have them at 8.2 wins. Nothing since has moved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cincinnati Bengals \u2014 Five Tight Ends and the Same Unanswered Question<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Bengals kept five tight ends<\/strong> on the 53-man roster, with Mike Gesicki returning as Burrow’s primary target at the position. They released Josh Johnson to help make room.

That is a meaningful allocation of roster spots, and it hints at an offence planning to use heavier personnel, which, for a team with the offensive line problems Cincinnati has, may be the point. Extra blockers are the cheapest available fix.

Because the line was never fixed.<\/strong> Orlando Brown Jr. allowed nine sacks over 733 pass-blocking snaps<\/strong> last season. Amarius Mims allowed 35 pressures over 694<\/strong>. Both start. Zac Taylor described the swing tackle competition in August as still open, and cutdown day did not resolve it.

Everything else is in place. The defensive front was rebuilt after Hendrickson left: Dexter Lawrence arrived from the Giants for the tenth overall pick, with Jonathan Allen and Boye Mafe alongside him. The schedule of opposing offences is among the softest in the league.

Prediction: 10-7, wild card.<\/strong> The same record as Baltimore, losing the division on tiebreakers. The ceiling here is higher than the Ravens’. So is the variance, and it all runs through one player’s availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleveland Browns \u2014 Building for Next Year, Openly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cleveland’s cutdown told the clearest story of the four.

Dillon Gabriel went to injured reserve. Sixth-round rookie Taylen Green made the 53.<\/strong> Deshaun Watson is the Week 1 starter, with Shedeur Sanders behind him.

That is a quarterback room organised around evaluation rather than winning, which is consistent with a front office that traded Myles Garrett to the Rams<\/strong> for Jared Verse, a first-round pick and additional compensation. That was the correct decision for a team in this position. It also settled the question of whether Cleveland intends to compete in 2026.

Watson won the job on efficiency: 11 of 15 for 126 yards with no turnovers in his one meaningful preseason appearance, after six interceptions across four practice days earlier in camp. He has also missed 66 games over five seasons<\/strong>.

Prediction: 5-12.<\/strong> The season’s real outcome is whether Cleveland commits to a young quarterback by December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predicted Order of Finish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Baltimore Ravens \u2014 10-72. Cincinnati Bengals \u2014 10-7, wild card3. Pittsburgh Steelers \u2014 8-94. Cleveland Browns \u2014 5-12<\/strong>

Current division odds: Ravens -105, Bengals +170, Steelers +550, Browns +2200.<\/strong>

This is the same order we projected before the cuts, and it is worth being direct about why: nothing that happened at cutdown changed the hierarchy.<\/strong> Baltimore got slightly better news than expected on Madubuike. Pittsburgh got slightly worse news than expected at right tackle. Neither moves a team ahead of the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Positions Worth Taking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fade Baltimore over 11.5.<\/strong> Still the strongest play on the board. A win total more than two games above the model projection, on a team with a first-year head coach and four rotation players who spent August injured, is a lot to pay for. The under<\/strong> is the side.

Cincinnati +170<\/strong> remains the value, conditional entirely on Burrow starting sixteen or seventeen games. That has been the plan for years, and it keeps not happening. The price accounts for it.

Pittsburgh under 8.5.<\/strong> The contrarian call, and the Jones trade strengthened it. A rookie right tackle who missed August, protecting a quarterback with no preseason reps, on a backloaded schedule.

Cleveland under.<\/strong> Straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pittsburgh host Atlanta.<\/strong> Rodgers’s first live football since January, behind a rebuilt right side of the line. The single most informative game in the division.

Cleveland travels to Jacksonville.<\/strong> Watson’s first competitive start of the year.

Cincinnati hosts Tampa Bay<\/strong> to open the season in Cincinnati.
