Currently offering a purse of $400,000, the race is open to two-year-old horses<\/strong> and is run at a distance of one mile and a sixteenth on dirt, and nowadays, the race is also part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series<\/strong>. The winner automatically qualifies for the TVG Juvenile<\/strong> presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speed record for the race’s current distance is by Polar Expedition<\/strong>, who won the Breeders’ Futurity<\/strong> in 1: 42.20 in 1993. The 10-length winning margin recorded by Gold Stage<\/strong> in 1979 is also a record. Jockey Don Brumfeld <\/strong>and trainer D. Wayne Lukas<\/strong> have added a record five and six wins each in the race, respectively.

Corniche<\/strong>, a son of Quality Road<\/strong>, earned 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his 4 1\/4-length debut victory in a speed race at Del Mar <\/strong>on Sept. 4. Rockefeller<\/strong>, a son of Medaglia d’Oro<\/strong>, was a 2 1\/2-length maiden winner on Aug, 28. Meanwhile, Flying Drummer<\/strong>, a son of Gun Runner, remains a maiden after finishing second in his two starts.

Outside of the Baffert trio, Oviatt Class<\/strong> might be the most interesting juvenile candidate in the American Pharoah field<\/strong>. He took advantage of an early pace to circle the field and win a one-mile maiden race at Del Mar<\/strong>. In his case, the movement was similar to that of Texas Red<\/strong>, who in 2014 won the BC Juvenile<\/strong> with a similar sustained run.
