Miesha “Cupcake” Tate<\/strong> is an American mixed martial artist.

She is a former Strikeforce and\u00a0UFC <\/a>Women’s Bantamweight Champion<\/strong>\u00a0and currently competes in the\u00a0Ultimate Fighting Championship<\/a>\u00a0(UFC<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tate was the VP for ONE Championship.

As of July 19, 2021, she is #8 in the\u00a0UFC women’s bantamweight<\/strong>\u00a0rankings, with 19 wins and 7 losses career, and is one of the most important female\u00a0MMA<\/strong>\u00a0figures in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tate <\/strong>made her professional debut in mixed martial arts in November 2007 at the one-night HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix<\/strong>.

She defeated\u00a0Jan Finney\u00a0<\/strong>by the decision but was knocked out later in the night by a head-kick from eventual tournament champion\u00a0Kaitlin Young<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout 2008 and 2009, Tate <\/strong>fought in several small organizations which did not regularly televise fights.

Miesha <\/strong>eventually captured the Strikeforce title, which lead to a fierce rivalry with the up and coming challenger, Ronda Rousey<\/strong>, who managed to take the title from “Cupcake<\/strong>“.

After she got a rebound victory, Strikeforce folded and their fighters went to the UFC<\/strong>, including Tate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UFC Profile \u2013 Miesha Tate’s UFC Run<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The road to her first Title Run:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  • Miesha Tate vs. Cat Zingano<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The UFC<\/strong> announced that she would face Cat Zingano<\/strong> on April 13 at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale.

    Before the fight, it was revealed that the winner of\u00a0Tate vs. Zingano\u00a0<\/strong>would receive a title shot against\u00a0Rousey<\/strong>, who became the inaugural\u00a0UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion<\/strong>\u00a0due to Strikeforce and the\u00a0UFC\u00a0<\/strong>being owned by the same company.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On May 28, it was announced that Zingano<\/strong> had withdrawn as Rousey<\/strong>‘s opponent and opposing coach after suffering a knee injury that required surgery, and had been replaced by Tate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Before their rematch, Rousey <\/strong>expressed respect for Tate’s<\/strong> fighting ability and declared her appreciation for their rivalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      First UFC victories<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      • Miesha Tate vs. Liz Carmouche<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Tate <\/strong>faced Liz Carmouche in the co-main event at UFC <\/strong>on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne<\/strong> on April 19, 2014.

        She won the fight via unanimous decision, earning her first win in the UFC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Miesha Tate vs. Rin Nakai<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Tate then faced promotion newcomer Rin Nakai<\/strong> at UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson<\/strong> on September 20, 2014.

          She won the fight via unanimous decision, making Tate <\/strong>2-2 in the UFC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Miesha Tate vs. Sara McMann<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Tate<\/strong> faced Sara McMann <\/strong>at UFC 183 on January 31, 2015.

            Tate<\/strong> surprised many in the MMA <\/strong>community by out-grappling McMann<\/strong>, an Olympic medalist in wrestling, for the majority of round 3, winning the fight by majority decision.

            Following Tate’s<\/strong> third UFC <\/strong>victory, FoxSports.com declared that Tate had “proven to be the top fighter in the world at 135 pounds outside of the champion<\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Miesha Tate vs. Jessica Eye<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              On March 20, 2015, it was announced that Tate would face\u00a0Jessica Eye<\/strong>\u00a0on July 25, 2015, at\u00a0UFC\u00a0<\/strong>on\u00a0Fox: Dillashaw vs. Bar\u00e3o 2<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Given the significance of the fight, which was initially promoted as a top-contender bout, Tate<\/strong> remarked that she expected “the best Jessica Eye<\/strong> that anyone has ever seen,” and called Eye<\/strong> a tough opponent.

              Tate<\/strong> won the fight by unanimous decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              UFC Championship and Defense<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
              • Miesha Tate vs. Holly Holm<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                On November 14, 2015, Holly Holm<\/strong> defeated Rousey for the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

                In January 2016, the UFC announced that Tate<\/strong> would be the first title defense for Holm<\/strong> at UFC 196 on March 5, 2016.

                After a back-and-forth four rounds that saw both fighters displaying an advantage,\u00a0Tate<\/strong>\u00a0defeated\u00a0Holm<\/strong>\u00a0via technical submission due to a rear-naked choke in the fifth round to become the new\u00a0UFC Bantamweight Champion<\/strong>.

                The win also earned Tate<\/strong> her first Performance of the Night bonus award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Following Tate’s victory over Holm<\/strong>, UFC <\/strong>president Dana White<\/strong> quickly announced that Tate<\/strong>‘s first title defense would be against Ronda Rousey<\/strong> at a yet-to-be-determined event later in 2016.

                  However, on April 6, White <\/strong>revealed that Tate <\/strong>would instead fight Amanda Nunes<\/strong> in her first title defense at UFC 200<\/strong> on July 9, 2016.

                  In this fight, Nunes<\/strong> battered Tate<\/strong> with several consecutive strikes and finished her with a rear-naked choke three minutes into the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Retirement and Return:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
                  • Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    Tate<\/strong> fought Raquel Pennington<\/strong> at UFC <\/strong>205 on November 12, 2016.

                    Before the event,\u00a0Tate<\/strong>\u00a0stated that she intended to take a hiatus from\u00a0MMA\u00a0<\/strong>after the bout.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    After losing to Pennington<\/strong> via unanimous decision, Tate<\/strong> announced her retirement from mixed martial arts<\/strong>.

                    “I love you all so much, I’ve been doing this for over a decade. Thank you so much for being here, I love this sport forever but it’s not my time anymore<\/em>,” she said after the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    • Miesha Tate vs. Marion Reneau<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      On March 24, 2021, Tate<\/strong> announced she would be returning to compete in MMA <\/strong>against Marion Reneau<\/strong> on July 17, 2021, at UFC <\/strong>on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Mois\u00e9s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      She won the fight via third-round TKO.
