Serie A Matchday 3 Roundup: Juventus vs Inter

All eyes were on this match, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Stunning goals, comebacks, stoppage-time drama, the Derby d’Italia had it all and ended with a thrilling 4-3 victory for Juventus over Inter.

The ‘Vecchia Signora’ wasted no time opening the scoring, making it 1-0 in the 14th minute after a first-time cross from Bremer on the right and a one-touch finish from Englishman Lloyd Kelly, who arrived in February but scored his first goal.

The equalizer came at the half-hour mark when Carlos Augusto set up Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and the Turk fired a low, driven shot from the edge of the box.

Before halftime, Kenan Yildiz struck from long range with a powerful effort that Yann Sommer couldn’t stop, putting Juve 2-1 up at the break.

The ‘Nerazzurri’ then turned the game around: first, with a brilliant goal from Çalhanoğlu, who controlled a high ball on his chest before sending a cross-shot into the net, and then a header from Marcus Thuram in the 76th minute.

But their joy was short-lived. Just six minutes later, Marcus’s brother Khéphren Thuram also scored with a header to equalize, under the proud gaze of their father, Lilian, watching from the stands as both sons scored against each other.

When it seemed destined for a draw, 19-year-old Montenegrin Vasilije Adžić unleashed a long-range strike to net his first goal in a ‘Bianconeri’ shirt and seal the derby for Juve.

Juventus now sit at the top alongside Napoli, both with nine points from nine, while Inter are 11th with just three.

Serie A Matchday 3 Roundup: Fiorentina vs Napoli

Napoli remain on top of the Serie A with a perfect record after defeating Fiorentina 1-3 away from home.

The reigning champions put the game on track early. In the 6th minute, Kevin De Bruyne converted a penalty, and by the 14th, Danish striker Rasmus Højlund latched onto a deep pass from Leonardo Spinazzola, outpaced his defender, shielded the ball, and finished neatly to the side to open his scoring account for his new club in his first match.

In the second half, defender Sam Beukema made it 0-3 from a corner, netting his first goal in a Napoli shirt, and his first in over a year, since February 11, 2024, with Bologna.

The hosts pulled one back late, in the 79th minute, when Luca Ranieri struck with his left foot at the near post. It was the first goal conceded by Antonio Conte’s side this season.

Napoli leads Serie A with nine points and a +5 goal difference, while Fiorentina drops to 16th place with just two points.

Among the weekend’s surprises, Roma, who were at the top, fell at home to Torino 0-1 and lost their unbeaten and perfect record.

Despite 73% possession and 22 shots, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side could not get past the resistance of Uruguayan goalkeeper Franco Israel, who was the man of the match.

The only goal came in the 59th minute with a fine strike from Giovanni Simeone from the edge of the box, giving the Turin side their first victory of the season.

Roma are now stuck on six points, dropping to sixth place, while Torino climbed to 10th with four points.

Serie A Matchday 3 Roundup: Verona vs. Cremonese

In one of Monday’s matches that closed out the round, surprise package Cremonese couldn’t keep their perfect run going but remain unbeaten, drawing 0-0 away to Verona.

After their two wins, one of them away at Milan, and with Jamie Vardy making his debut, there was plenty of expectation around Cremonese. However, the fans ended up applauding Emil Audero, the star of the evening, with nine saves.

Verona, who were bottom of the table and playing their first home game, dominated the action with 20 shots, nine on target, but couldn’t score as the 0-0 stood firm.

Cremonese now sit third with seven points, while Verona are 17th with two.
