This week featured a midweek matchday in the Brasileirão, as four teams are competing in the Club World Cup, and it was the last round before the league pauses until mid-July.
Cruzeiro failed to take advantage of Flamengo’s absence and couldn’t reach the top of the standings after a goalless draw against Vitória.
One of the surprises was Bahia’s 3-0 away win over Red Bull Bragantino, while Santos climbed out of the relegation zone after a 2-3 victory versus Fortaleza.
Another team that earned all three points on the road was Vasco, defeating São Paulo 3-1. Atlético Mineiro was the only home team to win, beating Internacional 2-0.

Brasileirão Matchday 12 Roundup: RB Bragantino vs. Bahia
RB Bragantino +113 | Bahía +291 | Retiros: +214 |
Red Bull Bragantino was another team that had the chance to take advantage of Flamengo’s absence and climb to the top of the Brasileirão table, but they were stunned at home by a 3-0 loss to Bahia.
Without a doubt, a key moment in the match was the red card shown to José Andrés Hurtado just 11 minutes in. The Ecuadorian defender committed a last-man foul and, after a VAR review, was sent off.
The visiting team took advantage of the situation, and in the 40th minute, Luciano Juba opened the scoring after a great team play.
In the final minute of the first half, goalkeeper Cleiton saved a shot from Everton Ribeiro but had the misfortune of the rebound hitting defender Guilherme Lopes and ending in an own goal.
Late in the match, after a long passing sequence, Michel Araújo fired from outside the box to seal the 0-3 win.
With the result, Bahia moved up to fifth place with 21 points, while RB Bragantino remained in third with 23.
Brasileirão Matchday 12 Roundup: Vitória vs. Cruzeiro
Vitória +222 | Cruzeiro +139 | Draw Offs: +219 |
The stage was set for Cruzeiro, who were just one point behind Flamengo —who weren’t playing this week— and facing Vitória, a team sitting in the relegation zone. But they couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw.
Under heavy rain and on a poorly conditioned pitch full of puddles that made it difficult for the ball to roll, the Belo Horizonte side suffered a major setback in the 44th minute when Eduardo was shown a red card for a hard foul on Jamerson.
Despite being down to ten men, Leonardo Jardim’s team had the better chances, hitting the post and narrowly missing several shots. They deserved the win but couldn’t find the back of the net, settling for a draw that puts them level on points with Flamengo at the top—though the Rio side has one game in hand.
For Vitória, however, it was a valuable result, as the point lifted them out of the relegation zone on goal difference with 11 points.
Brasileirão Matchday 12 Roundup: Atlético Mineiro vs Internacional
Atlético Mineiro -108 | Internacional +336 | Draw Offs: +238 |
Atlético Mineiro did take advantage of the Club World Cup to climb several spots in the standings after defeating Internacional 2-0, dropping the visitors into the relegation zone.
In an entertaining match with chances on both ends, the score was opened around the 30-minute mark when a cross from the left intended for Rony was intercepted by Inter’s captain Vitão, who accidentally headed it into his net.
The ‘Colorado’ side pushed for an equalizer but was denied multiple times by goalkeeper Weverton and the post. The match remained open until the dying moments when, in the 90+4 minute, Igor Gomes set up Júnior Santos—who had come on just five minutes earlier—and the forward sealed the 2-0 win.
Con este resultado, Atlético Mineiro now has 20 points, climbing to seventh place, overtaking Botafogo and Mirassol, who didn’t play. Meanwhile, Internacional slipped to 17th, now sitting in one of the league’s four relegation spots.
Brasileirão Matchday 12 Roundup: São Paulo vs. Vasco
São Paulo -109 | Vasco +346 | Draw Offs: +236 |
São Paulo were stunned at home, falling 1-3 to Vasco da Gama, who capitalized on the chances they created.
Despite the hosts being the more aggressive side early on, it was the visitors who opened the scoreboard in the 26th minute. Rayan drove a low shot into the net just as he entered the box.
In the 40th minute, after a tussle in the area and a shot from Rayan that was saved by goalkeeper Rafael, Nuno Moreira pounced on the rebound and fired it in first touch to make it 0-2 for Vasco.
After that second goal, the Rio side kept pushing and created several more chances. Eventually, in the 69th minute, a defensive miscommunication led to a botched clearance, and veteran striker Pablo Vegetti tapped the ball into an open net to make it 0-3.
São Paulo pulled one back in the final play of the match, at 90+3’, with a brilliant left-footed strike from Ryan Francisco just outside the box.
With this result, Vasco leapfrogs São Paulo by one point. One now sits 13th with 13 points, while the other drops to 14th with 12.
