Premier League Matchday 2

Last Updated on agosto 21, 2023 5:55 pm by Erwin Noguera

With the reigning champions still in the lead and only two teams holding their pace, they are feeling quite comfortable pushing forward.

Let’s take a look at what took place all over this last matchday, to figure out where we are now and where things are headed.

Second-half goals from Pape Sarr and substitute Ben Davies gave Tottenham Hotspur a deserved 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League.

United thought they should have had a penalty during the first half when Alejandro Garnacho’s shot struck Cristian Romero’s arm but a VAR review concluded with no offence found.

Four minutes into the second period, Dejan Kulusevski was allowed space to cross from the United left and his delivery struck Lisandro Martinez before falling for Sarr to steer high into the net.

Antony almost found an instant equalizer when he rattled the post on the end of a pass from Bruno Fernandes, who spurned a glorious headed opportunity from six yards out when the game was goalless.

The Red Devils’ misery was complete seven minutes from time when Davies scuffed home a cross from fellow sub-Ivan Perisic to crown the latest flowing move from Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Pep Guardiola made changes to the team who beat Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, most notably Alvarez coming in for Cole Palmer on the right wing.

Palmer had been the scorer against Sevilla and it was Alvarez on the scoresheet this time, notching the only goal of the game.

Midway through the first half the impressive Phil Foden darted into the Newcastle box before pulling the ball back to Alvarez, who was lurking on the edge of the box.

The Argentine forward took a touch, before rifling a right-footed effort past Nick Pope and into the top corner.

City, and Foden in particular, fashioned other half chances in the second half but neither side came particularly close to the back of the net.

The hosts were able to see out the win and the Etihad erupted in celebration on the final whistle as Manchester City began their home campaign with a hard-fought win.

Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio struck second-half goals as 10-man West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 in an action-packed derby at the London Stadium.

The Hammers made the perfect start when £30m summer signing James Ward-Prowse marked his debut with an assist inside seven minutes.

Nayef Aguerd was the beneficiary as he rose highest to head the former Southampton midfielder’s right-wing corner past Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea responded and deservedly leveled when 19-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka rifled a superb solo strike into the far corner for his first senior goal just shy of the half-hour mark.

The lively Raheem Sterling then earned Chelsea a penalty two minutes before half-time, but Enzo Fernandez’s low spot-kick was well saved by Alphonse Areola.

Chelsea turned to British record signing, Moises Caicedo, as he made his debut from the bench and their hopes appeared to be further boosted when Aguerd was sent off for a second bookable offense 23 minutes from time, although they were already 2-1 down thanks to Michael Antonio.

However, West Ham defended for their lives and then sealed the points when Caicedo brought down Emerson, allowing Paqueta to convert a stoppage-time penalty.

This just in, Arsenal has just managed to beat Crystal Palace on a clean sheet after Martin Odegaard scored the only goal via a penalty shot in the 53rd minute.

It should’ve allowed Arsenal to be quite comfortable going forward, except for the fact that they got themselves a red card in the 67th minute, which took Takehiro Tomiyasu out of the match and left them with only 10 men on the field.

They managed to keep their opponents at bay but the game went up to 7 added minutes after the 90 mark, so it kept the fans on the edge of their seats for as long as it took for it to finally end.

And with this, Arsenal keeps as close as possible to Manchester City, looking not to let them get ahead.
