The first overall pick in the 2026 draft didn’t take a snap in Week 1.

Fernando Mendoza sat behind Kirk Cousins in Las Vegas. Ty Simpson sat behind Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles. For the first time in several years, the rookie story of the opening weekend has nothing to do with a quarterback.

It has to do with linebackers, edge rushers, and offensive tackles, and one of them has already halved his price in the Defensive Rookie of the Year market.

Here is what the first weekend actually told us, and what it did not.

One Game Is One Game

Before any of this, the honest caveat.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed 25 times for 138 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut. Anthony Schwartz put up 69 receiving yards in his and appeared in 25 games total. Mac Jones threw for 281 yards at a 102.6 passer rating in his opener before things went wrong in New England.

It cuts the other way too. C.J. Stroud was sacked five times and did not throw a touchdown in his first game. Penei Sewell allowed six pressures in his. Joe Burrow threw for 193 yards with no touchdowns and a 66.1 rating.

So the useful question is not who produced. It is how they produced. A rookie who posted numbers because his team handed him a full-time role, and won his individual matchups within it, is telling you something. A rookie who posted numbers off one tipped pass is not.

Every player below is graded on that basis.

Anthony Hill Jr. — LB, Titans

The most complete rookie performance of the weekend, from the 60th overall pick.

Hill was the seventh linebacker taken in this class. In his first NFL game, he played 63 snaps, finished with 16 tackles, broke up two passes, and allowed 23 yards on six targets.

The snap count matters more than the tackles. Sixteen tackles is not a weekly number, and nobody should expect it to be. But Tennessee asked a second-round linebacker to play every down (against the run, in coverage, and as a blitzer), and he handled all three assignments in his first sixty minutes of professional football. That is a role, not a highlight.

The historical comparison is instructive. Sauce Gardner allowed one catch for eight yards in his first game. Will Anderson Jr. generated five pressures on 23 rushes. Neither produced a gaudy stat line. Both won their snaps rather than survived them, as the underlying numbers showed. Hill’s debut fits that profile.

Watch for: whether the snap count holds. Three-down linebacker usage in Week 1 is the strongest single indicator on this page.

David Bailey — EDGE, Jets

The No. 2 overall pick, and the biggest mover in any rookie betting market.

Bailey arrived from Texas Tech having led the country in sacks with 14.5 and in tackles for loss with 19.5 in his final college season. Against Tennessee, he generated four pressures on 27 pass-rush snaps (a 14.8% pressure rate) and was credited with a sack.

Be honest about the sack. He was the nearest man to Cam Ward when the quarterback ran out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. It counts on the sheet; it was not a win at the line. The hustle to be there was real, and it was a theme all afternoon.

The pressure rate is the number that matters. Sacks are volatile and largely a function of opportunity. Pressure is repeatable. Jalen Carter had eight pressures in his first game. Jared Verse had six on 23 rushes. Will Anderson Jr. had five on 23. In all three cases, the sack totals got the headlines and the pressure rates were the better forecast.

The market has already moved. Bailey opened Week 1 at +800 for Defensive Rookie of the Year and is now +400, having passed Rueben Bain Jr. to become the favourite. That is a price halving off one game, which is exactly the kind of overreaction the opening weekend produces, but the underlying rate supports at least part of it.

Josiah Trotter — LB, Buccaneers

Tampa Bay spent heavily on its defence this offseason, and the 46th pick outplayed all of it.

Trotter led the Buccaneers with 11 tackles, recorded the team’s only sack, added two tackles for loss and a pass breakup, and returned a Joe Burrow interception 38 yards for a touchdown.

Discard the pick-six. Defensive touchdowns are the least repeatable event in football, and no projection should be built on one.

What remains is still the story. Trotter played 58 snaps, reached double-digit tackles, lived in the offensive backfield, and was used repeatedly as a blitzer. Todd Bowles does not hand that usage to a second-round rookie casually. Strip out the single splash play and the day still reads as a full-time role executed well.

The awkward part for Tampa Bay is that their headline defensive investment had the opposite kind of afternoon, and the two now sit in the same award market.

Caleb Douglas — WR, Dolphins

The best offensive rookie performance of the weekend, and it came in a defeat nobody watched to the end.

Douglas was a third-round pick and widely graded lower than that. Miami drafted 13 rookies and lists six of them as starters, which tells you the state of the roster. Wide receiver was among the largest of its many questions.

He caught five passes for a game-high 94 yards, including gains of 25 and 30 yards.

The usage is what elevates this above a nice line. Douglas ran 32 routes and drew seven targets. This was not a screen-and-quick-game stat line padded in garbage time; he was operating as one of Miami’s primary downfield threats in his first professional start, with the offence dealing with penalties and protection problems around him.

The relevant comparison is about role rather than volume. Puka Nacua’s debut mattered because the Rams fed him 15 targets. Ja’Marr Chase’s 101-yard opener came on seven. In both cases, the offence signalled from day one that the player was central to it. Douglas is not at Nacua’s usage level, but 32 routes in a first start asks a real question about where he already sits in this depth chart.

Blake Miller — OT, Lions

Detroit’s biggest mystery was continuity on the offensive line. The 17th overall pick removed it in one afternoon.

With Penei Sewell at left tackle, Miller started on the right, the side where he made his largest strides across two seasons at Clemson. He played 73 snaps, allowed no sacks, and gave up one pressure.

For a first-year tackle, that is close to the ceiling of a realistic debut.Rashawn Slater played 78 snaps without allowing a pressure in his first game and became exactly what that suggested. Creed Humphrey allowed zero across 41 pass-blocking snaps. Both held up.

The counterweight sits on Miller’s own line. Sewell allowed six pressures in his Week 1 and went on to become one of the best players in the league. One game does not settle a tackle in either direction.

The point is narrower and still valuable: Detroit gave a rookie tackle a full workload and never had to spend the afternoon helping him. That is a line that can be built on.

The Offensive Line Class Is the Quiet Story

Three more first-year linemen held up in Week 1, and collectively they are the most encouraging thing about this draft.

Keylan Rutledge, Texans: played all 73 snaps, incluido 42 in pass protection, and allowed two pressures and no sacks. Not flawless, but down-to-down competence from a first-round lineman is precisely what Houston paid for.

Francis Mauigoa, Giants: el 10th overall pick produced 34 pass-blocking snaps without allowing a single pressure, reportedly the first rookie since 2018 to manage that volume cleanly in an opening week. His run-blocking grades were uneven. Given the Giants’ recent history with first-round linemen, the pass protection alone is a change of direction.

Skyler Gill-Howard, Lions: a Day 3 pick who played 44 snaps, generated two pressures and held up against the run. The pass rush was not overwhelming. Earning that workload in Week 1 as a late selection is the notable part.

None of these performances will lead a highlight package. All three are better predictors than most of what will.

The Running Backs and the OROY Market

Jeremiyah Love, Cardinals: el No. 3 overall pick y la corriente Offensive Rookie of the Year favourite at +550. His Week 1 line was modest: 41 rushing yards, con 38 of them coming after he forced a missed tackle, plus a five-yard touchdown in Arizona’s 26-14 upset of the Chargers. He split the workload with Tyler Allgeier and was returning from a high ankle sprain that cost him several weeks.
