It was a thrilling Premier League weekend in Matchday 11, with several big games that tightened the race at the top after a small stumble from the leader.

Arsenal couldn’t get past Sunderland, the surprise of the season, and drew 2-2 thanks to a last-minute goal. Manchester City took full advantage, crushing Liverpool 3-0, as the ‘Reds’ continue to drop down the table.

Meanwhile, Manchester United keeps showing steady improvement, this time earning a draw in London against Tottenham, while Chelsea showed no mercy to Wolves with a 3-0 win.

Elsewhere, Newcastle’s terrible start to the season continued with a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, while Aston Villa cruised past Bournemouth.

Jornada 11 de la Premier League: Tottenham contra Manchester United

Matthijs de Ligt rescued a point for Manchester United by scoring a last-minute goal in their 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

The ‘Red Devils’ are experiencing a small resurgence after several difficult years, and this season gives them hope for a decent campaign. Against a strong opponent, they took the lead in the 32nd minute with a header from Bryan Mbeumo after a cross by Amad Diallo.

In the second half, the ‘Spurs’ turned things around—first with a goal from Mathys Tel in the 84th minute after receiving the ball inside the box and spinning to shoot, and then through Richarlison in stoppage time (90+1’), redirecting a Destiny Udogie shot with his head.

It looked like a heroic comeback for Tottenham, but in the 96th minute, De Ligt rose up to head home from a corner and make it 2-2.

It was a thrilling match filled with chances and drama, but ultimately, the draw doesn’t help either side much. Both teams now sit on 18 points, eight behind the leaders, with Tottenham in fifth and Manchester United in seventh.

Sunderland continues to be the big surprise of the tournament, this time managing to snatch a draw against league leaders Arsenal and remain in the top four. The match ended 2-2.

The home side even took the lead in the 36th minute when Nordi Mukiele headed down a ball for Daniell Ballard, a defender who came through Arsenal’s youth academy, who blasted it past David Raya to make it 1-0.

Arsenal pressed hard from all angles, and in the second half, they finally managed to turn the game around. First came Bukayo Saka in the 54th minute after Sunderland’s failed attempt to play out from the back, and then Leandro Trossard in the 74th with a brilliant long-range strike.

It looked like Arsenal would walk away with all three points, but in stoppage time (90+4’), a looping header from Ballard fell into the box, and Brian Brobbey lunged forward to just get his foot on it despite close marking from Gabriel Magalhães, scoring his first goal for the club and securing the draw.

The ‘Gunners’ remain top of the table with 26 points, but their lead is now just four. Sunderland, meanwhile, sit fourth with 19 points.

They didn’t score early, but Chelsea had no trouble comfortably defeating Wolverhampton 3-0 to move up to third place in the Premier League.

The London side dominated throughout but had to wait until the second half to find the net. The opener came in the 51st minute when Malo Gusto headed in a cross from Alejandro Garnacho—the first professional goal for the 22-year-old French defender, who made his debut with Lyon in January 2021.

The second goal arrived in the 65th minute after a great run down the right by Estêvão, who sent a cutback to João Pedro for the finish and 2-0. The Brazilian had just come off the bench a minute earlier and helped unlock the match.

The final blow came in the 73rd minute, when Garnacho broke away and set up Pedro Neto, who tapped the ball in for the 3-0 scoreline.

The ‘Blues’ now sit third with 20 points, while Wolves remain at the bottom of the table with just two points, the only team yet to win a match this season.

Liverpool’s crisis continues, and this time Manchester City showed no mercy, crushing them with a dominant 3-0 victory.

Things didn’t start well for the ‘Reds’. A miscommunication between Ibrahima Konaté and Conor Bradley allowed Jérémy Doku to steal the ball, and he was then brought down in the box by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Erling Haaland stepped up to take the penalty, but the Georgian guessed correctly and made the save, keeping it 0-0 in the 13th minute.

Haaland would get his revenge in the 29th minute after a cross from the right by Matheus Nunes. The Norwegian rose above Konaté and left the keeper frozen to make it 1-0—his 14th goal of the league and 27th of the season in just 17 games.

Liverpool thought they had equalized when Virgil van Dijk headed home from a corner, but the goal was disallowed. Andrew Robertson was in the ball’s path, but though he didn’t obstruct Gianluigi Donnarumma’s view, the officials still called him offside.

In first-half stoppage time, Nico González doubled City’s lead with a shot from outside the box that deflected off Van Dijk, wrong-footing the keeper.

Just past the hour mark came the gem of the night—Doku feinted past his marker and fired a curling long-range shot into the far corner, unstoppable for the goalkeeper. A stunning goal to seal the 3-0 win in Pep Guardiola’s 1000th match as a manager.
