Forty-one points. Survival confirmed on the final day by a João Palhinha goal in a draw against Everton. Three managers came and went across a single campaign. It was the worst season in the club’s modern history.

Then they spent £237 million.

Roberto De Zerbi has been given a squad rebuilt from the spine outward, including the two most expensive signings in Tottenham’s history within weeks of each other. The bookmakers have responded by cutting their title odds to 20/1 and pricing them at 8/1 for a top-four finish. That is a remarkable swing for a team that was fighting relegation in May.

En Casino Gambyl, La acción trasciende el campo. Thomas Frank took over and lasted until February 11. Igor Tudor ran the team on an interim basis from February 14 to March 29. Roberto De Zerbi arrived on March 31 with the club in a relegation fight and roughly seven weeks to fix it.

He did fix it, barely. Tottenham stayed up on the final day. Arsenal won the title in the same season, which made the contrast in North London as stark as it has ever been.

What De Zerbi inherited was not an empty squad. It was a genuinely promising group of young players operating without structure, confidence or a coherent identity. His job was to keep it together long enough to survive. He did that.

The £237 Million Rebuild

Tottenham’s summer has been the most aggressive in the Premier League.

Sandro Tonali — £100m from Newcastle. The club record. An elite two-way midfielder who controls tempo and covers ground, and exactly the profile De Zerbi’s system requires at the base of midfield.

Mateus Fernandes — £85m from West Ham. Briefly, the club record before Tonali arrived. A creative central midfielder who progresses the ball and gives Spurs a genuine chance creator from deep.

Jan Paul van Hecke — £52m from Brighton. A De Zerbi signing in every sense. Van Hecke is a ball-playing center back who came through the club where De Zerbi built his reputation in England, and he understands the demands of the system.

Andrew Robertson — free from Liverpool. His contract expired on July 1. He is past his peak, and he brings something this squad had almost none of last season: a player who has won titles and knows what a functioning dressing room looks like.

Marcos Senesi — free from Bournemouth. Another free transfer with genuine Premier League quality, and he earned a World Cup call-up on the back of his form.

Martin Dubravka — free from Burnley. Backup goalkeeping cover, Antonin Kinsky handed a new five-year deal.

Totals cost £237 million. Income: £64 million. Net spends is minus £173 million. That is a club acting as if last season was an aberration rather than a warning.

What They Lost

The outgoings are smaller but not insignificant.

Luka Vuskovic went to Brighton for £46 million; a young centre-back many expected to be a long-term fixture. Yves Bissouma was released. Radu Dragusin is on loan in Fiorentina. Will Lankshear went to Middlesbrough for £10 million and Tynan Thompson to Manchester United for £8 million.

The bigger concerns are the ones not yet resolved. Guglielmo Vicario has reportedly agreed personal terms elsewhere, with Inter and Juventus circling. Cristian Romero is linked with Manchester United. Destiny Udogie is a Juventus target. Lucas Bergvall has been linked with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Losing Romero would be the one that hurts. He is the best defender at the club and the closest thing this team has to a leader on the pitch. Selling him after a relegation scare and calling it a rebuild would be difficult to defend.

The Case for the Bounce Back

De Zerbi’s system fits the players they bought. This is not a scattergun spend. Tonali, Fernandes and van Hecke are all specific profiles for his style: build from the back, control the middle, progress through the lines. De Zerbi has been given the tools he actually asked for, which is more than most managers get.

A full preseason changes everything. He arrived in March with seven weeks and a relegation fight. He now has a complete summer to install his ideas from scratch. The gap between those two situations is enormous.

The young core is still there. The squad De Zerbi described as highly promising has not been dismantled. It has been reinforced with experience and quality around it.

He committed when it mattered. De Zerbi publicly said he would stay even if Tottenham went down to the Championship. Managers say a lot of things. That one bought him credit with a fanbase that had watched a revolving door for eighteen months.

41 points is a floor, not a level. Seventeenth place massively understates the talent in that dressing room. The gap between the squad’s quality and its results last season was the widest in the league.

The Case Against

Spending is not the same as improving. Chelsea has spent a decade proving this. Two £85m-plus midfielders arriving in the same window creates integration problems, and De Zerbi has to make it work immediately in a league that does not wait.

Tonali and Fernandes play similar roles. Both are central midfielders who want the ball. Making them complementary rather than redundant is a real tactical challenge.

The defence still is not settled. They bought two center backs and sold one, and the two best defenders at the club are both linked with exits. That is not stability.

No striker. The most obvious gap in this squad has not been addressed. Santiago Gimenez and Marcus Rashford have been mentioned. Neither has arrived. A team with this much midfield investment and no reliable goal scorer is an expensive way to draw matches.

Confidence takes longer than transfers. A group that spent a year losing does not become a top four side because six new players walked through the door. Psychological damage from a relegation fight is real, and it lingers.

What the Numbers Say

The projections have been consistent, and they are not extreme.

A supercomputer model has Tottenham finishing eighth: an eight-place improvement on last season. Points projections have them gaining more than 20 points on last year’s total, landing around 61 points and a comfortable top-half finish.

Meanwhile, the market prices are 8/1 for top four and 20/1 for the title.

Those two pictures do not agree. Eighth place and 61 points is a solid recovery season. It is not Champions League football, and it is nowhere near a title challenge. The betting odds reflect the excitement around the spending. The models reflect football.

The Verdict

Yes, Tottenham will bounce back. The floor was 17th, and there is almost no scenario where this squad, with this manager and full preseason, repeats that.

But bouncing back and challenging are different things. Sixth to eighth is the realistic range. Top four is possible if Tonali is as good as the fee suggests, if Romero stays, and if they sign a striker before September 1. Those are three conditions, and the last one is the most important and the least likely to be resolved well.

The transfer window closes on Tuesday, September 1 at 11pm. What Tottenham do between now and then (particularly whether they hold onto Romero and finally buy a centre-forward) will determine whether this is a genuine recovery or the most expensive mid-table season in Premier League history.

De Zerbi has been backed. Now he must be right.

Tottenham finished 17th last season in the Premier League.
