Their odds are now three times those of the second-ranked team in MLB. And the same trade knocked a point off the Milwaukee Brewers, who were reportedly bidding for Skubal themselves.

Forty-two trades were made. That pursuit justified parting with a genuine prospect package: Zyhir Hope, ranked 25th on the MLB Pipeline top 100, and River Ryan at 68th.

Skubal’s health was the one real question, and he has answered it. Since returning from an elbow procedure on June 13, he has a 2.87 ERA with a 71-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That is the best left-handed starter in baseball pitching.

There is a case that even the six-point FanGraphs jump undersells this. Projection models do not account for how heavily October rotations lean on their best arms. The 2001 Diamondbacks are the template. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling threw 34.6% of Arizona’s regular season innings and 58.2% of their postseason innings. Aces matter more in October than any model can capture.

The Dodgers also added Kris Bubic, currently on a rehab assignment. They did all of this while keeping the top tier of their farm system, because their financial resources let them replace talent externally in ways almost no other club can.

Orioles de Baltimore

The most interesting winner, because they sold.

Baltimore traded Adley Rutschman, a former first overall pick with just over a year of club control left, to a division rival and extracted a return more typical of a superstar than a solid regular.

They acquired three of Boston’s top five prospects: right-hander Anthony Eyanson, the 49th-ranked prospect in baseball and now Baltimore’s number one; Kyson Witherspoon, a preseason top-100 arm; and outfielder Enddy Azócar. Plus major league catcher Carlos Narváez.

The timing was right. Rutschman remains an above-average catcher but is no longer the perennial MVP candidate people projected, and Baltimore already has Samuel Basallo as its long-term answer behind the plate. They never won a playoff game with Rutschman on the roster.

Mike Elias acknowledged the awkwardness of the trade partner directly: “They’re sending a lot of talent our way, too, and they’re going to have to watch some of these guys when we play each other.”

Selling the right asset at the right moment for the right price is exactly what a disappointing season should produce.

Guardianes de Cleveland

Cleveland has been able to pitch for years. The offence has been the problem, and this deadline finally addressed it.

The numbers were dire. The Guardians entered deadline day ranked 29th in runs and 30th in slugging. Their outfield production has been the worst in MLB since 2023. Cleveland outfielders have combined for 136 home runs in that span, dead last, and 30 fewer than the second-worst team.

They acquired Jo Adell from the Angels for catching prospect Jacob Cozart. Adell is not a complete player; he has struggled badly against right-handed pitching this year and is not a strong defender, but he has 97th-percentile bat speed at 77.3 mph and hit 37 home runs last season. Cleveland needed exactly that skill.

They also added Nathaniel Lowe from Cincinnati and Foster Griffin from Washington, whose career revival in Japan has carried into the majors with a 3.06 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Griffin cost them nothing from their top 20 prospects.

In a wide-open American League, Cleveland got meaningfully better without mortgaging anything.

Rayos de la Bahía de Tampa

The Rays did something out of character, and they were right to.

Small and mid-market teams are usually rational about prospect capital, because even strong contenders carry modest title odds in any single season. Occasionally the correct move is to be irrational. Tampa Bay decided this was one of those years.

They bought low on Freddy Peralta, whose surface numbers with the Mets were down but whose underlying indicators are intact. 94.3 mph fastball velocity in line with recent seasons and a stable 104 Location+. No organisation in baseball has a better record of extracting value through small adjustments.

They added Tyler Wells, who has pristine command and a sub-3.00 ERA since the start of last season, and catcher Liam Hicks, whose breakout is built on a genuine drop in strikeout rate and improved contact quality.

The Rays hold the best record in the American League. These moves give them a real chance to keep the AL East and a first-round bye.

Piratas de Pittsburgh

The Pirates bought at a deadline, which is news on its own. What matters more is that they bought the right thing.

Pittsburgh does not need another anchor; the young core is already strong. What it needed was to stop losing late leads, and the bullpen was tied for sixth in baseball with 19 blown saves.

They acquired Luke Weaver, arguably the best reliever moved all summer and under club control through 2027. They added Kirby Yates, Lake Bachar, and Camilo Doval, a talented and erratic arm who is a genuine change-of-scenery candidate. Combined with the emergence of Mason Montgomery from the left side, the entire back end has been rebuilt.

They did it without gutting the farm system. For a franchise that has hedged at this point on the calendar for years, that is a clean win.

Cachorros de Chicago

The most improved team in the National League outside Los Angeles.

Chicago’s lineup was already complete; depth, power, speed and contact. The rotation was the hole, and injuries had forced them into stopgaps. They fixed it, acquiring Kevin Gausman from Toronto and Clay Holmes from the Mets, plus reliever Ryan Zeferjahn.

Gausman is a battle-tested playoff starter. Holmes should be an excellent fit in front of Chicago’s infield defence. They parted with real value to get there and probably overpaid slightly, which is how deadlines usually work when you actually improve.

¡Atención nuevos jugadores!

Apueste en deportes legalmente en Gambyl Betting Exchange. Reporting indicates they could have landed him while keeping top prospect Jesús Made. They passed.

The consequence is measurable: FanGraphs dropped the Brewers to 9.4% after the Dodgers made the trade. Milwaukee got worse in title probability by doing nothing about a deal they were involved in.

What they did get was Dustin May, JoJo Romero, and Antonio Senzatela; a package most analysts believe they overpaid for. The Brewers are a superbly run organisation that plans ahead and makes the playoffs almost every year. They also consistently refuse the move that would turn them from a playoff team into a favourite.

The Dodgers eliminated Milwaukee in last season’s NLCS. Milwaukee had the prospects to close that gap and chose not to.

Bravos de Atlanta

An eight-game lead in the NL East, a healthy roster capable of troubling anybody, and almost nothing to show for deadline day.

The additions were Lane Thomas, a veteran outfielder with a .719 OPS who hits lefties; Tyler Mahle, a rental with a 5.13 ERA; Bailey Falter, who carries a 13.97 ERA and is currently in Triple-A; and Brent Suter, a second left-handed reliever at 4.12.

Atlanta’s single clearest need was a playoff-calibre starting pitcher. Alex Anthopoulos did not get one. The Braves will win their division comfortably and finished the week further behind the team they must beat in October.

Tigres de Detroit

Trading Skubal was correct. Everything around it was not.

Detroit moved him 48 hours early, then went quiet until 6:00 PM Monday, when they finally sent Casey Mize to San Diego. Two good returns for their two best pitchers.

Then they kept Gleyber Torres and Kenley Jansen (both potential free agents this winter) in a market where contenders were paying premiums for right-handed bats and bullpen arms. Selling halfway is the worst version of selling. If Detroit was going to be this passive, holding Skubal into the offseason would have built a bigger market.

Rojos de Cincinnati

The clearest failure in either direction.

Cincinnati traded Nathaniel Lowe and Caleb Ferguson. That was the whole deadline. This is a team 5.5 games out of a playoff spot with six clubs ahead of it, and one of the National League’s worst since April.

Brady Singer stayed with no clarity on a qualifying offer. Eugenio Suárez stayed. Tyler Stephenson stayed, on a day when the Yankees were desperate enough for a catcher to pay for one. Brock Burke stayed.

A roster full of expiring contracts on a team going nowhere, almost entirely retained. There is no version of that decision that works.

Rangers de Texas

Texas traded Josh Smith and Josh Stephan to Toronto for Adam Macko. That was it.

The Rangers came in off a poor road trip, and reports suggested they were open to moving most of the veteran roster. Then they picked neither direction; no buying to save the season, no selling to build the next one. Jacob deGrom holds a full no-trade clause, which explains one absence but not the rest.

They are left with an expensive roster that does not project anywhere.

The Yankees: The Most Divisive Team of the Deadline

New York genuinely splits the analysis, and both cases are strong.

The case for winner: Luis García Jr. was leading the National League in slugging when they acquired him. His transformation from a contact hitter (bat speed up to 74 mph, air-pull rate at 19%) has produced 23 home runs. Heliot Ramos has a 110 career wRC+ on the road against 103 at Oracle Park, an unusual split that should correct at Yankee Stadium. New York upgraded a banged-up lineup without surrendering an elite prospect.

The case for loser: They did not add a single catcher, the most obvious hole on the roster, while Adley Rutschman went to a division rival and Liam Hicks went to Tampa Bay. And the bullpen got worse. Yovanny Cruz went to Washington in the García deal, and Camilo Doval was shipped to Pittsburgh. A team that needed relief help finished with less of it.

Both readings are defensible. The tiebreaker is context: Boston and Tampa Bay unequivocally improved in the same division, in the most open American League in years, during Aaron Judge’s prime. Adding useful bats while your two closest rivals add stars is not standing still.

What It All Means

The National League is now the Dodgers and a queue. Their title probability is triple the next team’s. Milwaukee had the resources to narrow the gap and declined. Atlanta had the need and did not address it. Only the Cubs meaningfully improved.

The American League is genuinely open, which makes the failures there more expensive. Tampa Bay, Cleveland and Boston all got better. The Yankees, Rangers and Tigers did not do enough, and Cleveland’s improvement in particular could decide a division nobody has claimed.

The most underrated outcome is Baltimore’s. Selling a franchise catcher to a division rival is not a decision most front offices are willing to make, and they turned it into three top-five prospects from a rival system. Sometimes the winner of a deadline is the team that admitted where it actually stood.

Roughly fifty games remain. The Dodgers are the overwhelming favourite, and everyone else is now playing for the chance to be the team that stops them.

One number explains the entire deadline.
