Lionel Messi has retired from international football. He announced it on Instagram on Monday, six weeks after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain.

He is 39. He played for his country for 21 years. The reason anyone is asking whether this is real is that he has done it before.

Here is what he leaves behind, and why this announcement should be read differently from the last one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Announcement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team,<\/em>” Messi wrote. “It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment.<\/em>\u201c

The timeline matters more than the wording.

Messi says he first wrote the goodbye in July<\/strong>, shortly after the final. He did not publish it. On 8 August<\/strong>, his father Jorge (his manager for the whole of his career) died at 68 following a long illness. Messi has said that loss reinforced the decision, and the post went up on 31 August<\/strong>.

That is roughly seven weeks between writing and publishing. Whatever else this is, it was not impulsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What He Leaves Behind<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

125 goals in 207 appearances.<\/strong> Argentina’s all-time leading scorer, in both categories, by distances that will not be closed soon.

    Read that list in order, and you see the actual shape of the career. Three Copa Am\u00e9rica finals lost, a World Cup final lost, and a decade of being told he did not care enough about the shirt; followed by four finals in six years, three of them won.

    The numbering arrived late. It arrived completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2026 World Cup Was His Best Individual Tournament<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This is the part that gets lost because Argentina lost the final.

    Messi scored eight goals<\/strong> at the 2026 World Cup. That equals Guillermo St\u00e1bile’s 1930 total<\/strong> as the most by an Argentine at a single World Cup, and both men reached it in five matches.

    He also finished the tournament as second in the all-time scoring table in World Cup history<\/strong>, passing Miroslav Klose’s 16. He holds nine World Cup assists<\/strong>, the most since records began in 1966. And he became the first player ever to score in six consecutive World Cup knockout matches<\/strong>: four in 2022, two in 2026.

    At 39, in his sixth World Cup, he had the most productive tournament of his life and lost the final 1-0 in extra time.

    There is no version of that ending that feels fitting. There is also no version in which he had more left to prove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why the Scepticism Is Earned<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    International retirements have become close to meaningless, and Messi is the single best example of why.

    He retired from Argentina once already.<\/strong> After the 2016 Copa Am\u00e9rica final (his third final defeat in three years), he announced in the tunnel that he was done with the national team. He was back within weeks. Had he stayed retired, he would have finished with no senior international trophies at all.

    He is not the only one. Zinedine Zidane<\/strong> retired from France in 2004 and returned in 2005, then took them to the 2006 World Cup final. The pattern is old, and it is well established: a great player loses a tournament, announces the end in the immediate aftermath, and reconsiders once the disappointment fades.

    That history is exactly why the seven-week gap in this announcement is the most important detail in it. The 2016 version was made in a tunnel, minutes after a penalty shootout. This one was written in July, held through a bereavement, and published at the end of August.

    The two decisions do not look alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Su\u00e1rez Case Cuts the Other Way<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Luis Su\u00e1rez<\/strong> is the name being raised as the most recent example of a reversed international retirement. The facts do not quite support that, and what actually happened is more interesting.

    Su\u00e1rez retired from Uruguay in September 2024<\/strong>, after 17 years and a public falling-out with Marcelo Bielsa, whom he accused of creating divisions in the squad. He left as his country’s record scorer: 69 goals in 143 caps<\/strong>.

    Eighteen months later, with a World Cup approaching, he reopened the door himself. “I would never say no to the national team if they need me,” he said, making himself available for 2026.

    Bielsa left him out of the squad.<\/strong> The manager named just three forwards and decided the 39-year-old did not fit what he wanted. It was the first time since 2010 that Uruguay went to a World Cup without him, and he was last capped in 2024.

    So Su\u00e1rez is not an example of a player who retired and came back. He is an example of a player who retired, changed his mind, and found out that the decision was no longer his to make.

    That is the useful caveat to the cynicism. Un-retiring requires somebody to pick you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Does Argentina Want Him Back?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This is where Messi’s situation differs from Su\u00e1rez’s entirely, and why the door genuinely stays open whether he wants it or not.

    Su\u00e1rez had a coach who did not want him. Messi has an AFA president who has publicly said he wants to retire the number 10 shirt<\/strong> in his honour. He has a manager who built the 2022 and 2026 sides around him. He is the leading scorer in Argentina\u2019s history, and he is walking away six weeks after his most prolific tournament.

    Nobody in Argentine football is going to tell Lionel Messi he cannot come back. The 2030 World Cup is four years away, and he would be 43; realistically, beyond it, but the qualifying campaign starts long before that, and a friendly appearance or a farewell match is a different question entirely.

    The honest position: this looks like a real retirement, made carefully, for reasons that go beyond football. It is also true that no international retirement is enforceable, that Messi personally proved that in 2016, and that the only thing that makes any of them final is time passing without a recall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What Comes Next<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Club football continues.<\/strong> Messi remains at Inter Miami, currently second in the Eastern Conference and just cut the worst run of his club career: five games without a win, and ten points off Nashville at the top. International retirement removes the travel and the fixture congestion, which is not a small thing for a 39-year-old carrying a team.

    A farewell match is the obvious next step.<\/strong> Argentina have never sent off a player of this stature and the AFA has an incentive to organise one. Whether Messi wants it is a separate matter.

    The number 10.<\/strong> Retiring a shirt number is uncommon in international football and would require FIFA cooperation on squad numbering for tournaments. The AFA president has raised it publicly. It is the sort of gesture that gets discussed for months and rarely gets done.

    And Argentina now has to build a team without him<\/strong>, which they have not genuinely had to do since 2005.

    Messi ends with 125 goals, 207 caps, a World Cup, two Copa Am\u00e9ricas, and second in the all-time World Cup scoring record. He also ends having lost his last match in the shirt, 1-0, in extra time, in a final.

    For a career defined for a decade by finals he could not win and then by finals he did, that is a strangely appropriate final image.
