Jacksonville went 13-4 last season, closed on an eight-game winning streak, and won the NFL AFC South division.

They are not the favourites to win it again.

The market has installed Houston ahead of them, and the projection models disagree: they rate the Jaguars as the best team in the division by a comfortable margin. Yesterday we looked at the AFC North, where the market was asking more than the models supported. Here the same gap runs in the opposite direction, and it is the most useful thing on the board.

Here is the division eight days out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Disagreement Worth Understanding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Division odds:<\/strong> Houston +110 to +135<\/strong>, Jacksonville +190 to +245<\/strong>, Indianapolis +370 to +380<\/strong>, Tennessee +800 to +850<\/strong>. Prices vary meaningfully between books this year, so shop before you take a position.

Model win projections:<\/strong> Jacksonville 9.9<\/strong>, Indianapolis 9.1<\/strong>, Houston 9.1<\/strong>, Tennessee 6.5<\/strong>.

Read those two lines together. The market makes Houston a clear favourite. The models make Jacksonville the best team by 0.8 wins and rate Houston level with Indianapolis.

The market’s reasoning is not hard to reconstruct. Houston has the more talented quarterback on paper, underachieved last season, and spent the offseason fixing the thing that broke them. Jacksonville’s 13-4 came with an eight-game winning streak attached, and streaks regress.

The models are looking at a defending champion whose quarterback finished the season as the best in football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacksonville Jaguars \u2014 The Champion Nobody Is Backing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Liam Coen’s first season delivered 13 wins and the club’s first division title since 2022.<\/strong> It ended with a home wild-card defeat to Buffalo.

The reason to expect more rather than less is Trevor Lawrence. From Week 13 through the playoffs, he was the highest-graded quarterback in the NFL.<\/strong> He finished with 29 passing touchdowns, nine rushing touchdowns, and 359 rushing yards. The second half of last season was the version of Lawrence that Jacksonville drafted him to become.

The concern is what they did next, which was very little.<\/strong> The Jaguars made few significant additions after winning the division, and they lost Travis Etienne to New Orleans<\/strong> in free agency. That places more of the offence on Lawrence directly, which is either the point or the problem, depending on whether you believe the second half of 2025 was real.

Their cutdown day was the quietest in the division. Nothing leaked in advance, and the notable departures were quarterback Nate Mullens and running back DeeJay Dallas. That is what a settled roster looks like.

Prediction: 10-7, division winners.<\/strong> Not 13-4 again. Enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Houston Texans \u2014 The Favourite With an Unfinished Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The market likes Houston, and the case starts and ends with C.J. Stroud.

The former Offensive Rookie of the Year is reported to look more comfortable and decisive in Nick Caley’s<\/strong> offence, and the franchise spent the offseason addressing the unit that has made his life difficult. They signed tackle Braden Smith<\/strong> and guard Wyatt Teller<\/strong> (Teller on a two-year, $16 million<\/strong> deal) to stabilise the front.

It is not stabilised yet.<\/strong> With the season approaching, Houston is still working out its best five up front, and Teller allowed a sack while working with the second-team offence during the preseason. Signing linemen in March and having a functioning line in September are different achievements.

The skill positions look thinner than the price suggests. Jayden Higgins is out for 2026 with a knee injury<\/strong>, and cutdown week was a scramble: Houston signed veteran receivers Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard on 21 August and released both on the 30th<\/strong>, having also signed running back Deuce Vaughn on the 24th and cut him six days later.

Teams with settled rosters do not churn like that in the final ten days.

Prediction: 9-8.<\/strong> The talent is real. The price assumes a line that has not been assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indianapolis Colts \u2014 The Quiet Case<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most under-discussed team in the division, and the models rate them level with Houston.

Daniel Jones has impressed throughout his return from an Achilles injury<\/strong>, including in joint practice work against Atlanta. That is the whole season in one sentence. The last time Jones came back from a major injury, his play deteriorated badly, and he was eventually benched. This time the early evidence points the other way.

Behind him, Anthony Richardson Sr. and rookie Riley Leonard have competed hard enough to keep the room sharp. Indianapolis released Nick Westbrook-Ikhine<\/strong> at cutdown.

The risk is at receiver.<\/strong> Alec Pierce signed a $114 million extension in March<\/strong> and has yet to practise following ankle surgery. If he is unavailable early, the offence loses its most expensive weapon in the stretch of schedule where the Colts most need points.

Their win total sits at 7.5<\/strong>, which is a full game and a half below the model projection of 9.1. That is the widest positive gap in the division.

Prediction: 8-9.<\/strong> Close to the number, and the over is defensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee Titans \u2014 The Long Shot With a Real Argument<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee cleared the deck at quarterback, releasing both Hendon Hooker and Will Levis<\/strong> at cutdown. There is no ambiguity left: this is Cam Ward’s team, and there is no plan B on the roster.

That is the bet the franchise has made, and there is a coherent case for it. Ward is a candidate for positive regression after a difficult first season, and Tennessee’s schedule of opposing offences is comparatively soft. More than one analyst has the Titans at +800<\/strong> as the best value play in the division.

We are not taking it.<\/strong> A team whose entire season depends on a second-year quarterback improving, with no experienced fallback and the weakest roster in the division, is priced at +800 for sound reasons. The models have them at 6.5 wins<\/strong>, more than three behind Jacksonville.

Prediction: 6-11.<\/strong> The long shot argument is real. It is still a long shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predicted Order of Finish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Jacksonville Jaguars \u2014 10-7, division winners2. Houston Texans \u2014 9-83. Indianapolis Colts \u2014 8-94. Tennessee Titans \u2014 6-11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Positions Worth Taking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jacksonville to win the division at +190 or better.<\/strong> The strongest play on this board. You are getting plus money on the defending champion, the team the models rate highest, with the quarterback who finished last season as the best in the league. The market has moved off them because 13-4 looks unrepeatable, which is true and irrelevant. They do not need 13 wins.

Indianapolis over 7.5.<\/strong> A win total a game and a half below the model projection, on a team whose quarterback has looked better than expected all August. Conditional on Pierce getting on the field.

Be careful with Houston at short odds.<\/strong> Nothing here says the Texans are bad. It says a team still assembling its offensive line ten days out is not worth backing at odds-on. If you want them, wait for the line to settle and take a better number in October.

Pass on Tennessee +800.<\/strong> Interesting, not actionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
