Kansas City still does not know who is playing right tackle, and if Josh Simmons’s back injury keeps him out of Week 1, Mahomes’s blindside could be protected by an undrafted rookie who played only the right side in college.

The Chiefs are favourites to win this NFL division for the tenth time in eleven years. Meanwhile, the team that actually won it last season, by multiple games, is priced third.

Here is the division seven days out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kansas City Chiefs \u2014 Favourites on Regression, Not on Evidence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Division odds: +160 to +180. Win total: 10.5.<\/strong> Look-ahead lines list Kansas City as favourites in eleven games.

The market’s case is explicit and worth stating plainly: an easy schedule, positive regression metrics, and an expectation of better results within the division. Those are all reasonable inputs. None of them is a result.

The tackle situation is the problem, and it is not a minor one.<\/strong> Kahlil Benson and Jaylon Moore spent training camp competing at right tackle, and neither won it. In both preseason appearances, Benson looked “slow-footed, unsure of himself, and completely overwhelmed.”<\/em> The assessment of Moore is barely kinder; he “loses slowly.”

That is the swing tackle conversation on a team whose quarterback is coming off a torn ACL and LCL<\/strong>. Andy Reid held Mahomes out of the entire preseason, which is the correct call medically and leaves Kansas City opening the season with a rebuilt knee behind an unresolved right side.

The interior is genuinely excellent<\/strong>, and it is the reason this is a problem rather than a catastrophe. Creed Humphrey is the best centre in the league<\/strong>, Trey Smith<\/strong> is a top-five right guard and fully healthy, and Kingsley Suamataia and Josh Simmons are young building blocks on the left \u2014 when Simmons’s back allows it.

Prediction: 10-7.<\/strong> Reid and Mahomes give this team a floor almost nobody else has. The ceiling depends on protection they have not yet found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los Angeles Chargers \u2014 Two Elite Tackles, Two New Coordinators<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Division odds: +185 to +191.<\/strong>

Jim Harbaugh has won eleven games in each of his first two seasons<\/strong> and reached the postseason both times. He has not yet won a playoff game, and that is the entire framing of year three.

The biggest factor is health at tackle, and it cuts directly against Kansas City.Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt<\/strong> have both returned from season-ending 2025 injuries, and together they form an All-Pro-calibre tandem. In a division where the favourite cannot identify a competent right tackle, the Chargers have two of the best in football coming back at once. That is described as the single biggest swing factor of their season, and it is not an exaggeration.

The risk is on the sidelines.<\/strong> Harbaugh enters the year with two new coordinators<\/strong>. Mike McDaniel<\/strong> (fired by Miami in January) replaces Greg Roman on offence, tasked with taking Justin Herbert to “the next level of his career.” On defence, first-year coordinator Chris O’Leary<\/strong> takes over from Jesse Minter<\/strong>, who left to become head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

Losing a coordinator to a head-coaching job is a compliment that costs you. Replacing both in one offseason, on a team with a proven eleven-win floor, is the sort of disruption that can cost two games before anyone adjusts.

Derwin James anchors a disruptive defence<\/strong> with a strong pass-rush group, which gives Los Angeles a floor even if the offence needs time to gel under McDaniel.

Prediction: 11-6, division winners.<\/strong> The healthiest roster in the division at the position that decides seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denver Broncos \u2014 The Champions Nobody Is Backing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Division odds: +210 to +225: third in their own division, having won it.<\/strong>

Denver took the AFC West last season by multiple games<\/strong> and went 5-1 within the division<\/strong>. That is not a fluke record built on a soft non-conference run; it is a team that beat the clubs now priced ahead of it.

They have an elite defence<\/strong> and a quarterback, Bo Nix<\/strong>, entering his third year: traditionally the season where a young starter either takes the step or reveals his ceiling.

Cutdown day showed a front office hedging.<\/strong> Denver kept all three quarterbacks<\/strong> on the 53-man roster. Nix, Jarrett Stidham, and Sam Ehlinger. Carrying three is a luxury most teams cannot afford, and it costs a spot elsewhere. They also made the surprising decision to release rookie tight end Justin Joly<\/strong>, a fifth-round pick from this year’s draft, which is an unusual outcome for a player selected that highly just months earlier.

The honest read on the price:<\/strong> the market believes last season was the outlier and that Kansas City reverts to type. That is a defensible position, and it is also the position the market takes every year. Denver went 5-1 against these teams.

Prediction: 10-7, wild card.<\/strong> Underrated at this number and capable of winning the division outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las Vegas Raiders \u2014 Everything Changed at Once<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Division odds: +1600 to +2000. Win total: 5.5.<\/strong>

The Raiders finished with the worst record in football and responded by changing the head coach, the quarterback room, and a substantial part of the roster.

They took Fernando Mendoza first overall.<\/strong> He threw for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns<\/strong> last season while winning the Heisman and a national title, then posted a 100.3 passer rating<\/strong> in his only preseason appearance: 10 of 16 for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Klint Kubiak has been clear that Kirk Cousins starts.<\/strong> Our position has not changed: a team going nowhere by October has no reason to protect a veteran’s job, and Mendoza starts before Week 6.

The running back room is the immediate worry.<\/strong> Las Vegas kept only three running backs<\/strong> on the 53, and that includes the injured Ashton Jeanty<\/strong>, who sprained his ankle in practice and left the field unable to put weight on it. He appears to have avoided anything serious, but carrying three backs with one of them hurt leaves no margin at all. Rookie Mike Washington Jr.<\/strong> (119 yards on 15 preseason carries) may be handling considerably more than planned.

The defence added several proven veterans in free agency, which is the quiet and sensible part of this rebuild.

Prediction: 6-11.<\/strong> At a 5.5-win total, they only need to be mediocre to beat the number, and a functional rookie quarterback in a Kubiak system gets them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predicted Order of Finish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Los Angeles Chargers \u2014 11-6, division winners2. Denver Broncos \u2014 10-7, wild card3. Kansas City Chiefs \u2014 10-74. Las Vegas Raiders \u2014 6-11<\/strong>

This is the tightest division in football at the top. Three teams are separated by roughly sixty points of odds, and any of them winning it would surprise nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denver +210 or better is the best value on the board.<\/strong> You are getting plus money at better than 2-to-1 on the defending champions, who went 5-1 in this division last season, have an elite defence, and are priced third because the market assumes Kansas City corrects. That assumption may be right. It is not worth a two-place demotion.

Los Angeles +185 is the second-best number.<\/strong> Two All-Pro tackles returning healthy, an eleven-win floor across two seasons, and a defence with a genuine identity. The coordinator turnover is the reason the price is not shorter, and it is a fair reason, just not a decisive one.

Kansas City at +160 is the one to fade.<\/strong> Not because the Chiefs are bad, but because you are taking the shortest price in the division on the team with the largest unresolved question. A quarterback returning from a torn ACL and LCL, behind tackles who were overwhelmed in preseason, is not what a favourite normally looks like.

Pass on the Raiders at +1600.<\/strong> The Over on 5.5 wins is the more sensible way to back this team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Decides It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether Kansas City finds a right tackle.<\/strong> Everything else about the Chiefs is in place. If Benson or Moore becomes adequate, the market is right, and this division is theirs again. If Simmons’s back keeps him out and an undrafted rookie ends up on the blindside, it is a very different season.

Slater and Alt staying healthy.<\/strong> Both missed the end of last season. The Chargers’ entire case rests on two players who are currently returning from injury.

Bo Nix in year three.<\/strong> Denver’s defence is good enough to win the division. Whether they win more than that depends on a quarterback taking the step that year three usually settles either way.

How long Kirk Cousins keeps the job.<\/strong> The Raiders’ season becomes interesting the moment Mendoza plays, and unlikely to stay competitive before then.

The favourite has a quarterback coming off major knee surgery and no right tackle. The defending champion, which won the division by multiple games, is third in the odds. In a division this close, that is where the value lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
