Eight days ago we wrote that Houston had taken the Western Conference from Vancouver, and that the Whitecaps losing top spot while carrying seven injuries were two related facts.

Vancouver then put four goals past FC Dallas in the first half of a 5-0 win and took the conference back.

That is the useful lesson before any ranked list: MLS in late August moves quicker than the table describing it. Here is where all of it actually stands.

These rankings weigh three things: points on the board, form over the last fortnight, and how many first-choice players a club can actually field.

1. Nashville SC

49 points, Eastern Conference leaders. Roughly a 43% chance of the Supporters’ Shield.

The most complete team in the league and the clearest number one on this page.

They beat Columbus on Saturday with two goals in stoppage time (an equaliser and a winner), which is the sort of result that separates a contender from a good team. They had already won 1-0 at New York in midweek.

The underlying reason has not changed since we pointed it out last week. Nashville have almost nobody unavailable. In a congested run-in, availability compounds in a way form does not.

The case against: none, currently. That is the problem with being top in August.

2. Vancouver Whitecaps

40 points, Western Conference leaders. Roughly a 28% Shield chance.

Lost 1-0 to Houston, immediately won 5-0 against Dallas, retook the West. Four of those goals arrived before half-time.

The ranking is a settlement between a team that leads its conference and a team missing seven players. Brian White (hamstring) had ten league goals and remains the most consequential single absence in MLS. Ranko Veselinović, Kwasi Poku, Kenji Cabrera and Belal Halbouni are also out.

The case against: they are winning the West with a patched-together side. That works until it does not, and the playoffs are single-elimination.

3. FC Cincinnati

The healthiest roster in the league.

Cincinnati have nobody on the injury report. Not one player. In a season where Seattle and New York City FC are each carrying eight absences, that is a structural advantage worth more than most transfer windows.

They backed it up by beating NYCFC 2-1 in midweek.

Why they rank here: a fully fit squad in late August is the single best predictor of a deep run in the playoffs, and Cincinnati are the only club in the East with one alongside Philadelphia.

4. Houston Dynamo

Held the West for less than a week.

Beating Vancouver on the road to take top spot was the biggest result of Matchday 21. Losing the position days later does not undo it: Houston went to a conference leader carrying injuries and won.

The case against: the West has changed leaders repeatedly this season and Houston have not separated from anyone. They are ranked on a single excellent result rather than a body of work.

5. Chicago Fire

The form team in the East, and the one nobody wants in a one-off match.

Robert Lewandowski has Chicago on an extended unbeaten run. They beat Orlando 2-1 in midweek, and they are now three points behind Inter Miami with a game in hand, which, given the direction each team is travelling, is a bigger gap than it reads.

They should have taken six points from the last two rounds instead of four, having led late at Red Bull New York before conceding in the 86th minute.

The case against: Lewandowski has never played an MLS playoff match, and neither has this version of the Fire.

6. Inter Miami

Second in the East and falling. Five games without a win.

The most significant story in the league right now, and it is not close.

Miami have gone winless in five, taking one victory from the whole of August. The run includes Leagues Cup defeats to Monterrey and Club León, a 4-1 loss to Nashville, a messy 2-2 draw at Philadelphia where they were outplayed by the hosts, and a 2-1 defeat to Toronto on 22 August in which Messi scored and it still was not enough.

They have conceded 2.4 goals per game across the streak. They have fallen eight points behind Nashville.

The Messi footnote that matters: if Miami fail to beat CF Montréal on Saturday, Messi will reach five consecutive appearances without a win, something he has experienced once in more than two decades as a professional, at Barcelona in 2013. Should Atlanta also hold them a week later, he enters territory he has never been in. The club’s streak and his personal appearance streak are counted slightly differently, but both point the same way.

The case for them: Messi is still Messi, and a single-elimination format does not care much about August.

7. LAFC

Ranked partly on reputation, which is the honest admission this list requires.

LAFC went unbeaten deep into 2026 before their first loss of the season knocked them off the top of most rankings, and Son Heung-min remains one of the few credible challengers to Messi for MVP.

The case against: we have less current form data on them than on anyone above, and this ranking shows that uncertainty rather than a conviction.

8. Philadelphia Union

No injuries whatsoever. One suspension.

Philadelphia were bottom of the Eastern Conference in July, one season removed from winning the Supporters’ Shield. Kai Wagner has returned from Birmingham City. They then drew 2-2 with Inter Miami while outplaying them.

A fully fit squad and a home performance against the conference’s second-placed team is a genuine base to build from.

The case against: the hole they dug in the first half of the season is still enormous.

9. St. Louis CITY

Extending an unbeaten run, most recently a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City.

Not a contender for anything above a playoff place, but a team that has stopped losing in a Western Conference where nobody has separated. In this league, that is often enough.

10. CF Montréal

Unbeaten through four games in August, and three points below the playoff line.

They beat Columbus 2-1 in midweek and drew with the Galaxy. Since the World Cup break, they have quietly stacked points without anybody writing about it.

They host Inter Miami on Saturday, which is the fixture that decides whether this is a run or a season.

Falling

Tripulação Colombo. A brutal week. They conceded a late winner to Montréal in midweek, then conceded both an equaliser and a winner to Nashville in stoppage time on Saturday. Losing three points twice in the final seconds is not bad luck at that frequency.

Seattle Sounders and NYCFC. Eight players out apiece. Seattle’s list is six soft-tissue injuries plus Nikola Petkovic gone for the season after ACL reconstruction; that is a workload problem, not misfortune. NYCFC are missing Alonso Martínez and Maxi Moralez simultaneously, which removes the goal threat and the creative hub in one go.

Orlando City. Signed Griezmann and got Daryl Dike back specifically to raise the ceiling, then lost Martín Ojeda and his eleven league goals to a thigh problem. They lost 2-1 to Chicago.

San Diego FC. Won the Western Conference in their inaugural season and have spent 2026 in a sophomore slump. Losing to a Portland side that had not won under Martí Cifuentes was close to the end of their margin.

What a Ranked List Does Not Capture

The West has no order. Vancouver, Houston and LAFC have traded the top of the conference all season, and Vancouver have just reclaimed it while missing seven players. Any ranking of the Western Conference in August has a shelf life measured in days, as our own Houston call demonstrated within a week.

Availability outranks form. Nashville leads with almost nobody out. Cincinnati and Philadelphia are fully fit. Seattle and NYCFC have eight apiece. Over a compressed run-in, that gap is more valuable than any tactical adjustment, and it is the single most useful filter for reading this table.

Nine teams per conference make the playoffs. That is eighteen of thirty clubs, which means the regular season sorts seeding rather than survival. A power ranking in August is really a ranking of who arrives in November intact.

Nashville are top of both measures that matter right now: points on the board and players on the field. Everything below them is moving.
