The New York Yankees are down 2-0 and facing elimination. They are priced at +750 to win the MLB World Series.

The Chicago White Sox are up 2-0 and one win from the Championship Series. They are priced at +1100.

A team on the brink is a shorter price than a team in control, and that single comparison tells you everything about how the market is valuing this postseason: it is still paying for talent and reputation over position.

Three of the four Division Series are 2-0. One is alive, and it plays Game 3 today.

Dodgers-Braves Game 3 is today, Tuesday 6 October, at 6 p.m. ET in Atlanta.

The White Sox Are One Win from the Championship Series

They opened the season at 500-1, tied for the longest World Series prize in baseball.

Since then, they have pushed Cleveland to the final weekend for AL Central, taken a wild card, swept Houston in two games, and now lead the Guardians 2-0 after a 4-3 win in Game 2.

Their price has gone from 500-1 in February to +1100 today.

This was the position we flagged going into the postseason: ESPN reported that the longest shots on the board were carrying the most liability for sportsbooks, and that the White Sox had accumulated the most of anyone relative to their opening number. Those tickets are now two wins from the World Series.

The underlying case was always better than the seed. Chicago finished 81-76 with a +45-run differential: 42 runs better than the Cleveland team that beat them to the division and the bye. They are now beating that team head-to-head.

The Yankees Are on the Brink, and the Format Is Why

Down 2-0 to Tampa Bay, having lost Game 2 by 5-2.

We have had this argument for a month, and it has now arrived at its conclusion. New York won 90 games with a +134-run differential (the best in the American League by 48 runs) and did not get a bye, because byes go to the top two division winners rather than the top two records.

So, they played an elimination series against Boston, won it in two, and arrived in Tampa with no rest against a team that had been resting for a week. They are now one defeat from the end of their season.

Tampa Bay is +550 and the better-positioned team. The Yankees at +750, needing to win three straights, are not a price we would touch.

Milwaukee Are Going for a Sweep

Up 2-0 on San Diego after a 4-3 win in Game 2.

The best record in baseball, the joint-best run differential at +200, a first-round bye, and now a 2-0 lead on the weakest underlying profile in the National League field. San Diego’s +34 differential was the thinnest of any NL qualifier, and we said their late 9-1 surge mattered because it sat on top of a standings cushion rather than instead of one. The cushion got them here. It has not got them further.

Milwaukee is +310, second on the board, and they are two wins from the pennant series with everything having gone to plan.

The Only Series That Is Alive

Los Angeles and Atlanta are tied 1-1, and the Dodgers have lost home-field advantage.

The Dodgers took Game 1 5-3. Atlanta answered with a 3-2 win in Game 2 using a bullpen game: no traditional starter, a sequence of relievers, and a one-run result against the best team in the National League by payroll.

Atlanta is now home for Game 3 today and Game 4 if required. They won 92 games with a +116-run differential, which is a better underlying season than San Diego’s or Philadelphia’s, and they removed the Phillies in a decisive Game 3 to get here.

This is the one Division Series where the better-seeded team has truly been inconvenienced, and it is the only one that could still produce an upset from a standing start.

The Mispricing

Read the first two rows together.

The Dodgers are the World Series favorite at +220 while tied 1-1 and without home-field advantage. Milwaukee is +310 while leading 2-0, with the best record in baseball and a +200-run differential.

That is the same gap we flagged before the postseason started: Milwaukee at +600 against the Dodgers at +200 when both had identical records and differentials, and it has barely narrowed despite the two teams’ series going in opposite directions.

The market has decided that the Dodgers will win this tournament regardless of what the bracket says, and it has held that view since February. It may be right. It is also the least efficient price on board.

The second mispricing is in the American League. The Yankees at +750 need three consecutive wins to survive their Division Series. The White Sox at +1100 need one. A team that must win three is priced shorter than a team that must win one, which is the market pricing the names on the jerseys.

Where We Were Right, and Wrong

Right on the Yankees and the format, repeatedly and at length. The best team in the American League by run differential played an extra series and is now 2-0 down in the next one.

Right on Houston. Called them pretenders on a -52-run differential; swept in two.

Right on San Diego’s profile. We said the cushion mattered more than the streak. The cushion got them in; the streak is gone.

Wrong on Cleveland, twice. We said their six-game September streak would not hold against a +3-run differential: they won the division and took the bye. We then noted the bye as a structural advantage. They are now 2-0 down to the team they beat to it. The first call was right, the second was wrong, and the +45 White Sox differential was the number that mattered all along.

And nobody had the White Sox, including us. A 500-1 team does not sweep a division winner and then lead the second seed 2-0 unless something was badly mispriced for six months.

What Happens Next

Three series can end today or tomorrow. Tampa Bay, Chicago and Milwaukee all need one win.

One series is genuinely open, and it is in Atlanta at 6 p.m. tonight.

And if the current leads hold, the American League Championship Series would be Tampa Bay against the Chicago White Sox: a 96-win team that nobody discussed against a team that opened at 500-1. The National League would be Milwaukee against the Dodgers or the Braves.
