The Houston Astros finished 81-81. They won the MLB AL West, took the third seed, and hosted all three potential Wild Card games against a Chicago White Sox team that had finished 83-78.
The team with the worse record had home field in every game of the series. Chicago swept it in two.
And the New York Yankees finished 93-68: eight games better than the Cleveland Guardians at 85-76. Cleveland got a first-round bye. New York did not. The Yankees played an extra series, arrived in Tampa with no rest against a team that had been idle for a week, and were swept 3-0.
Neither of those outcomes was an upset. Both were the format working exactly as designed. If you are betting this postseason without understanding the bracket, you are not reading the same tournament the oddsmakers are.

The Twelve-Team Bracket
Six teams per league: three division winners and three wild cards.
| Seed | Liga Americana | Registro | Liga Nacional | Registro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Raios de Tampa Bay (AL East) | 98-63 | Cervejarias Milwaukee (NL Central) | 102-59 |
| 2 | Guardiões de Cleveland (AL Central) | 85-76 | Los Angeles Dodgers (NL West) | 99-62 |
| 3 | Houston Astros (AL West) | 81-81 | Atlanta Braves (NL East) | 94-67 |
| 4 | Yankees de Nova York | 93-68 | San Diego Padres | 90-71 |
| 5 | Boston Red Sox | 87-74 | Filhotes de Chicago | 88-73 |
| 6 | Chicago White Sox | 83-78 | Philadelphia Phillies | 88-74 |
Read the American League column twice. The second seed won 85 games. The fourth seed won 93. The third seed finished exactly .500.
Rule 1: Byes Go to Division Winners, Not to the Best Records
The top two division winners in each league receive a bye straight to the Division Series. Wild cards cannot earn one, no matter how many games they win.
This is the single most important structural fact in the tournament, and it is the one that most consistently surprises people reading a standings page.
In the National League, it caused no distortion. Milwaukee at 102-59 and the Dodgers at 99-62 were also the two best records in the league. The format and the merit agreed.
In the American League, it produced the gap of the decade. Cleveland won their division with 85 wins and got a week off. The Yankees won 93 and had to play. Eight games of separation, and the format handed the advantage to the worse team.
What this means for betting: a seed number is a description of which division a team won, not a measure of how good it is. Price the team, never the seed.
Rule 2: The Wild Card Series Is Best-of-Three, All at One Park
Three games, no travel, every game hosted by the higher seed. That is the most concentrated home-field advantage anywhere in the sport; more than the World Series, more than any Game 7.
Which is how an 81-81 Houston team came to host an 83-78 White Sox team three times. The Astros won a weak division; the format rewarded it with the most valuable home field in the bracket.
And it is also the round where the best team is least protected. A 60% favourite per game wins a best-of-three only 64.8% of the time. One bad start, one bullpen sequence, and a 90-win season is over in forty-eight hours.
Rule 3: There Is No Reseeding
The bracket is fixed. The No. 1 seed plays the winner of the 4-5 series. The No. 2 seed plays the winner of the 3-6 series. A top seed cannot be re-matched against whichever team happens to be weakest.
This year that meant Tampa Bay were always going to face the Yankees or the Red Sox: the two best records in the league after their own. Cleveland, the 85-win second seed, drew the 3-6 bracket.
What this means for betting: you can price the entire path before the first pitch. The No. 1 seed’s route is knowable in advance, and in the American League it was obviously the harder one despite the better seed.
Rule 4: Home Field, Round by Round
Wild Card Series: best-of-three. All three games at the higher seed.
Division Series: best-of-five, 2-2-1. Higher seed hosts Games 1, 2, and 5.
League Championship Series: best-of-seven, 2-3-2. The No. 1 seed holds home field through the LCS; Tampa Bay locked that up when they clinched the AL East on 22 September.
World Series: best-of-seven. Home field goes to the team with the better regular-season winning percentage, regardless of seed, division title or wild card status. Ties are broken by head-to-head record.
That rule has a concrete consequence this year. Milwaukee at 102-59 would host anyone. And if the Dodgers (99-62) advance instead, they would still host Tampa Bay (98-63), by a single game in the standings. Either way, the National League champion hosts the World Series.
The Maths That Actually Matters
Longer series favour the better team. They favour it far less than people assume.
Take a team that is a genuine 55% favourite in any single game: a real edge, bigger than most postseason matchups.
| Series length | Win probability | Fair price |
|---|---|---|
| Best-of-three | 57.5% | -135 |
| Best-of-five | 59.3% | -146 |
| Best-of-seven | 60.8% | -155 |
A 55% per-game team is only a 60.8% favourite over seven games. Four extra games of sample buy you three and a half percentage points.
Now a clearly superior team at 60% per game:
| Series length | Win probability | Fair price |
|---|---|---|
| Best-of-three | 64.8% | -184 |
| Best-of-five | 68.3% | -215 |
| Best-of-seven | 71.0% | -245 |
Even a 60% team loses a best-of-seven nearly three times in ten. This is why the best regular-season team wins the World Series so rarely, and why a 500-1 preseason price can reach the Championship Series.
Use this in reverse to read a series price. The Dodgers are -160 to win the NLCS, which implies 61.5%. Work backwards through the best-of-seven formula, and that corresponds to roughly a 55% per-game edge over Milwaukee.
So the market is saying the Dodgers are a modest favourite in any given game against the team with the best record in baseball, on that team’s home field. That is a defensible position. It is also a much smaller claim than -160 sounds.
What the Format Did to This Postseason
Four concrete outcomes, all traceable to the bracket rather than to the baseball.
The Yankees were swept, and the format set it up. 93 wins, the best run differential in the American League, no bye. They beat Boston, travelled, and lost three straight to a rested Tampa Bay side. The best team in the league by the underlying numbers is out in the Division Series, having played one more series than the 85-win team that got a week off.
The White Sox are two wins from the World Series from a 500-1 preseason price. They were the sixth seed at 83-78. They swept an 81-81 division winner on that team’s home field, and now lead Cleveland. ESPN reports that public action at long odds has made them a significant sportsbook liability. Game 4 is today in Chicago.
Houston’s home field was worth nothing because Houston was not good. A .500 division winner with the most valuable home-field assignment in the bracket lost in two games. The format gives the advantage to the seed; it cannot give the seed a better team.
And the bye cut both ways. Cleveland’s rest was real, and we wrote that it was a structural advantage. They then went 2-0 down to the team they had beaten for the division. Rest helps. It does not substitute for a +45 run differential, which is what Chicago had, and Cleveland did not.
The Current Board
| Equipe | Série Mundial | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles Dodgers | +125 | NLCS — vs Milwaukee |
| Raios de Tampa Bay | +300 | ALCS — awaiting opponent |
| Cervejarias Milwaukee | +310 | NLCS — vs Los Angeles |
| Chicago White Sox | +1100 | Leads ALDS 2-1 |
| Guardiões de Cleveland | +2000 | Trails ALDS 1-2 |
NLCS: Milwaukee hosts Game 1 on Sunday, October 11. The Dodgers are -160 to win the series.
ALCS: begins Monday, October 12 in Tampa Bay. The World Series starts 23 October.
The Dodgers at +125 are the shortest they have been all year, having been championship favourites since before the season started. Whether a team that needed four games to remove Atlanta deserves to be a 5-to-4 shot with three opponents left is the live question on this board.
The Format Is About to Change
MLB formally proposed a new structure to the players’ union today, 8 October. None of it is agreed, and it matters for anyone betting on future postseasons.
The Division Series would expand to best-of-seven from 2029, played over eleven days instead of nine, with additional off days before Games 5 and 7. On the maths above, that would raise a 60% team’s series win probability from 68.3% to 71.0%: more protection for the better team, and fewer Cinderella runs like Chicago’s.
The regular season would shorten to 154 games from 2029, the first time since the 1960s. MLB spokesman Glen Caplin framed it as a weekly off day for player health plus a new national broadcast window.
And the strangest proposal: higher seeds would choose their own opponents, starting in 2027. The No. 3 seed would pick whether to face the No. 5 or No. 6 seed immediately after the regular season, and the No. 1 seed would pick which Wild Card winner to play once that round finished. That would eliminate the fixed bracket entirely, and with it the ability to price a path in advance.
Two large caveats. The players’ association has not accepted any of this, and has said its own proposals are contingent on agreement over a salary cap. The collective bargaining agreement expires on 1 December, after this World Series, and a work stoppage is widely expected. These are proposals in a negotiation, not scheduled rule changes.
The Four Things to Take Away
The seed describes a division title, not a quality. An 85-win team can hold a bye while a 93-win team plays. Bet the underlying numbers.
The Wild Card round is the highest-leverage home field in baseball (three games, one park), and the round in which the best team is least protected.
Longer series help the favourite less than the price implies. A 60% per-game team loses a best-of-seven almost 30% of the time.
And run differential has beaten record and seeding all month. Chicago’s +45 beat Cleveland’s +3. The Yankees’ league-best differential could not beat a bye they were never eligible for.
