Liga dos Campeões: Clubes sob pressão na metade da fase de grupos

Porto beat Napoli 4-1 on Wednesday and stayed in the elimination zone. That is the Champions League league phase in one line.

Four matchdays are gone, four remain, and eleven of the thirty-six clubs have three points or fewer. Napoli are 27th. Villarreal are 28th. RB Leipzig are 30th. Atlético Madrid are 23rd and survive only on goal difference.

Nothing is decided, and almost nothing is safe. Nine clubs are tied on nine points, and they occupy places four through twelve; the same cluster sits on both sides of the line that separates a direct round-of-16 place from a two-legged playoff.

How the Format Works, and Where the Lines Are

Top eight go straight to the round of 16. Ninth to 24th go into a two-legged knockout playoff. Twenty-fifth to 36th are out of Europe entirely. No Europa League parachute, nothing.

After Matchday 4, the two cut lines sit here:

PosiçãoClubePontosGDGF
8thLiverpool9+414
9thClube Brugge9+411
24thPSV Eindhoven4-13
25thBodo/Glimt4-54

Read those two pairs again. Liverpool hold a direct round-of-16 place over Club Brugge on goals scored: same points, same goal difference, three more goals. And PSV stay alive over Bodo/Glimt on goal difference alone, both on four points.

Both cut lines are currently settled by tiebreakers. That is what a 36-team single table does halfway.

What a Club Actually Needs

There are only two completed seasons of this format, so the sample is small, and we are going to say so rather than dress it up. Across 2024-25 and 2025-26, the last qualifying place in the top 24 was taken with somewhere between nine and eleven points, settled on goal difference both times. Twelve points have been safe in both seasons. The top eight line sat around sixteen.

Work forward from that, and the math gets blunt.

Eleven clubs sit on three points or fewer, and every one of them is still mathematically alive, because three points plus four wins is fifteen, and even Slovan Bratislava’s zero plus twelve clears the historic line. Mathematically alive and likely are different things, and the remaining fixtures are where that difference lives.

Napoli Are the Biggest Club in Trouble

Three points from four games. Twenty-seventh. Their worst Champions League start since 2017-18.

Wednesday’s 4-1 at Porto was the third defeat in four matchdays. Jan Bednarek opened it, Scott McTominay equalized before the break, and Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior, and Samu scored after it, the last from a penalty after Rafa Marín was sent off.

Massimiliano Allegri had nine players unavailable through injury, including Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Leonardo Spinazzola. He named seven substitutes and switched to a 3-5-1-1. Afterwards, he spoke about the squad’s “limitations” and said the team ran out of fuel. McTominay said publicly that Napoli concede too many goals and that he was angry.

Here is the problem that injuries do not explain. We mapped every club’s four remaining opponents and totaled their current points. Napoli’s remaining four carry 25 points between them; the joint second-hardest run of any club in the elimination zone, level with Sabah FK and Lens, and behind only AEK Athens on 28.

They go to Manchester City on November 24, host Club Brugge on December 8, travel to Sabah FK on January 20 and host Viking FK on January 27. The two winnable games are both in January, after a seven-week break and with the season’s damage already done.

The market prices the City trip at 0.44 expected points for Napoli, stripping the vig out of DraftKings’ -425 / +550 / +850. That is not a game you plan around. It means six points from the three that follow, two of which are against sides currently 31st and 22nd.

It is doable. It is also the narrowest path of any big club in the competition.

Atlético Madrid Are 23rd and Hold the Best Hand in the Bottom Half

Four points, minus one goal difference, 23rd place, surviving on a tiebreaker. Tuesday’s 0-2 at home to Bayern Munich ended a nine-match unbeaten run (Lennart Karl on 54 minutes, Konrad Laimer on 74).

Diego Simeone’s assessment was short: Bayern were superior, and his side lacked intensity in duels.

Now look at what is left.

Dia de jogoDataFixtureOpponent’s position
MD5November 25vs Viking FK22nd, 4 pts
MD6December 9at PSV Eindhoven24th, 4 pts
MD7January 19at Bodo/Glimt25th, 4 pts
MD8January 27vs Fenerbahce19th, 5 pts

Every remaining Atlético opponent is currently between 19th and 25th. Their combined total of 17 points is the joint fifth-softest remaining schedule in the entire 36-club field by that measure, level with Bayern Munich and Fenerbahce. They are favorites at -1000 to beat Viking at home, which converts to about 85% no-vig and 2.66 expected points from the opening fixture alone.

Atlético’s position is bad, and their fixture list is excellent. Those two facts resolve in their favor, but three of the four are against clubs fighting for the same places, so the points they take come directly out of a rival’s total. That cuts both ways, and it is why this is a schedule worth betting on rather than a result worth assuming.

Leipzig and Villarreal: Same Points, Different Odds

Both have three points. Both have a minus-six goal difference. Both have won once in four. Their remaining schedules are the second- and joint third-softest in the competition.

RB Leipzig, 30th. Wednesday’s 2-3 at home to Manchester City was the better performance of the two; Castello Lukeba’s own goal, Ridle Baku’s equaliser, Enzo Fernández, Antonio Nusa, and then Erling Haaland on 78 minutes. Leipzig had 14 shots to City’s 13 and lost. They host Lens on November 24 as -240 favorites, which is 66% no-vig and 2.16 expected points, then face Manchester United away, Shakhtar at home, and Feyenoord away. Opponents’ combined total: 16 points.

Villarreal, 28th. They were beaten 6-0 at home by Paris Saint-Germain, who scored four times inside the first 17 minutes and had their biggest away win in the competition’s history. Villarreal have now conceded 14 goals in four games and three or more in each of their three defeats. ESPN’s model gave them 0.66 expected goals in that match against PSG’s 2.69.

And Villarreal have the second-easiest remaining schedule of all 36 clubs. Slavia Prague away, Sabah FK at home, Fenerbahce away, Manchester United at home: 15 points between the four of them. The market has them as +125 road favorites at Slavia, worth 1.49 expected points.

The difference between these two is reputation, not arithmetic. Leipzig lost narrowly to a better side; Villarreal were taken apart. Both need two wins out of four, and both have the fixtures to get them.

Porto Won and Are Still Outside

Francesco Farioli’s side beat Napoli 4-1 for their first European win of the season and climbed to 26th. That is the cleanest illustration of the format we have seen all phase: a four-goal performance against a Serie A side moves you from 34th to 26th and no further. Porto had zero points before Wednesday.

Their remaining problem is geography. Feyenoord away on November 24, Liverpool away on December 9, Slavia Prague at home on January 19, LASK Linz away on January 27. One home game in four; the fewest of any club in the elimination zone; every other club down there has at least two.

The compensation is that the market rates them. They are +125 at Feyenoord on Matchday 5, favorites on the road against a side that has conceded eleven. Strip the vig, and it is Porto 41.3%, draw 25.5%, Feyenoord 33.2%. 1.49 expected points against 1.25.

Porto’s minus-one goal difference is also the best of any club in the elimination zone, which matters a great deal in a format where the last place has been decided on goal difference in both completed seasons.

The Dutch Problem

PSV Eindhoven are 24th. Feyenoord are 32nd. Neither has scored more than four goals in the phase.

PSV have three goals in four games: the second fewest in the competition, behind only Slovan Bratislava’s one. They hold the last qualifying place on goal difference, and they open the second half at Real Madrid, where they are +850 and worth 0.42 expected points. Then Atlético at home, Viking away, Stuttgart at home. Their opponents’ combined total is 27 points, the joint ninth-hardest remaining run in the field and by a distance the hardest of any club hovering around the cut.

Feyenoord’s schedule is the opposite. Porto at home, Viking away, Galatasaray away, Leipzig at home: 16 points between them, joint third-softest overall. They also conceded eleven and been beaten in three of four.

One of these two has the position and not the fixtures. The other has the fixtures and not the form.

Lille, Slavia, and the Clubs Who Need Near-Perfection

Lille have one point. Slavia Prague have one point. Slovan Bratislava have none and a minus-sixteen goal difference.

Lille’s remaining four: Bayern at home, Stuttgart away, Slovan at home, Roma away. They are +650 against Bayern on Matchday 5: 12.6% no-vig, 0.53 expected points. To reach nine, they need eight from twelve starting with that.

Slavia Prague face Villarreal at home, Bayern away, Porto away, and Aston Villa at home. Their opponents total 23 points, the hardest of the three clubs on one point or fewer.

We are not going to pretend these are live. One point from four with four to play, against that caliber, is a season that has already happened. The honest framing is that Lille and Slavia are playing for goal difference and seeding, not qualification.

O que os números dizem

Eighteen of the thirty-six clubs are within three points of the top-eight line. Half the competition is still playing for a direct round-of-16 place after half the games.

Seventeen clubs are on four points or fewer. Nearly half the field needs a strong second half just to make the playoff round.

Nine clubs are tied on nine points, running from Como in 4th to Borussia Dortmund in 12th. A single matchday can reorder all nine of them, which is why we are not touching top eight markets yet and would advise the same.

And the two clubs nobody is worried about are Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, both on 12 from 12. PSG have scored 20 goals, the most in the phase, and Como are next on 19 after a 9-1 win at Lens that equaled the largest winning margin in Champions League history.

O que faríamos

Villarreal to reach the top 24, and this is the position we hold most confidently. They need six points from a schedule that totals 15 opponent points (the second softest in the competition) with a home game against Sabah FK and a home game against a Manchester United side on six points. The 6-0 was ugly, and it was against the holders. The fixtures that remain are not that.

Against Napoli reaching the top 24, at half stakes. Three points, nine injured players, the second-hardest joint remaining run in the elimination zone, and a trip to Manchester City first. Their two winnable games are seven weeks away, and both come after the Brugge fixture that will likely decide it. We would not stake this heavily, because Sabah away and Viking at home are genuinely winnable, and six points from those two plus anything against Brugge gets it done. But the path is narrow, and the squad is thin.

Porto +125 at Feyenoord on Matchday 5. The better side, the better goal difference, and the market already agrees. We are taking it because the schedule after it is brutal, and this is the one of their four that they should win. Feyenoord have conceded eleven in four.

Atlético Madrid to finish in the top 24 is the obvious projection, and we are pointing it out rather than betting it, because the price on a club with that fixture list will not be worth taking. Four opponents between 19th and 25th. That is a schedule, not a crisis.

And the discipline for Matchday 5 is to leave the top eight alone. Nine clubs on nine points across places four to twelve, two cut lines currently decided on tiebreakers, and four matchdays left. There is no edge in pricing a table that one matchday can invert.
