The 11th matchday of the Liga MX Apertura Season brought surprising developments for fans watching the matches unfold. The standings at the top of the table have been shaken upconsiderably.

Most of the top teams won their matches, allowing them to continue their pursuit of the top position. However, there was one notable clash that featured two of these top-placed teams, leading to the unexpected end of the last unbeaten streak of the season.

Cruz Azul dropped from the top position to 4th place, giving Toluca, Monterrey, and Club America the chance to close the gap. With no team leading by a significant margin, the competition has intensified. Tigres currently holds a 3-point advantage over 6th-placed Tijuana, making the race for the top increasingly tight.

Overall, the teams in the upper half of the table performed well, with only one loss among them during the matchday. We’ll break down the matches that were played, including the impressive upset that has significantly altered the standings, as we conclude the 11th matchday of the Apertura MX Season.

Liga MX Apertura Matchday 11 Roundup: Monterrey x Santos Laguna

Monterrey -345 Santos Laguna +800Draw Offs: +500

With Santos Laguna at the 13th spot on the board and going on an awful run in which their losses are their biggest stat, we were not expecting them to be able to handle the now second-placed Monterrey team.

Not only were we correct in the assuption, as Monterrey managed to score an early goal with Lucas Ocampos going in at the 36th minute of the match, but Santos Laguna decided to make things worse for them in the aggregated time, with Anthony Lozano getting a Red Card in the 5th minute past the 90th mark, which will be noticed in their following match.

Result: Monterrey 1-0 Santos Laguna

Liga MX Apertura Matchday 11 Roundup: Toluca vs. Mazatlan

Toluca -357Mazatlan +810Draw Offs: +519

The hosting Toluca sent a statement in this clash, making the most of this clash with the 16th placed Mazatlan, as they were expected to take the 3 points with their crowd cheering.

What they did, however, was to create a wide gap as the team with the most goals, after getting an early goal at the 25th mark by Hector Herrera, who actually got himself expelled via Red Card in the 7th minute of aggregate time in the first half.

Even with a Man Down, the hosts decided to be offensive forward, scoring a 2nd goal in the 49th minute and a Penalty in the 89th, to keep things comfortable for themselves, as even though Mazatlan did score on the 2nd minute after the 90th, it was not enough to begin to worry about it.

Result: Toluca 3-1 Mazatlan

Liga MX Apertura Matchday 11 Roundup: América x Pumas

Club America -132 Pumas +336Draw Offs: +294

Even though the odds may have foretold that America would have quite a breeze during this clash, we believe the hosts might have been a little worried during that first half, as Pumas opened the score early with Jorge Ruvalcaba’s goal in the 34th minute.

The hosts planned to retaliate in the second half, but their confidence was boosted as Alvaro Angulo scored an own goal in the 55th minute, getting the score even.

This allowed Club America to go all in, scoring on the 59th, the 73rd, and then landing a penalty on the 83rd, to keep their crowd cheering all second half long.

Result: America 4-1 Pumas

Liga MX Apertura Matchday 11 Roundup: Tijuana x Cruz Azul

Tijuana +323Cruz Azul -145Sorteios: +280

This match was the biggest upset of the weekend, as Tijuana not only ended Cruz Azul’s unbeaten streak but did so convincingly. Cruz Azul struggled after being reduced to 10 men early in the game when Jorge Rodarte was sent off in the 5th minute.

Tijuana took advantage of this situation and scored their first goal in the 4th minute, just before half-time. They added a second goal in the 72nd minute while effectively keeping Cruz Azul at bay, despite having only about a third of the ball possession throughout the match.

The atmosphere at the Xolos stadium was electric, with the crowd fully aware of the significance of their team’s ability to disrupt Cruz Azul’s impressive momentum in such a decisive manner.

Result: Tijuana 2-0 Cruz Azul
