Liga MX: Rodadas finais do Apertura, o que está em jogo?

Pumas x Cruz Azul

Last Updated on Outubro 30, 2026 8:08 pm by Erwin Noguera

Fourteen matchdays are gone, and sixteen of the eighteen clubs can still reach the Liga MX Liguilla. Only Necaxa and FC Juárez are out.

Nobody is in, either. América lead with 28 points and Querétaro, ninth on 20 with a game in hand, can still finish on 32. With three rounds left and no Play-In to catch anybody, the arithmetic barely began to close.

And the number that decides more than it should is fourth place. Under this tournament’s format, a quarterfinal or semifinal level on aggregate is settled in favour of the better-placed team in the general table. Seeding is not home advantage here. It is a tiebreak that wins ties outright.

Which makes Atlas the most interesting club in Mexico right now. They are fourth on 24 points with a goal difference of minus one, the only side in the top eight being outscored by its opponents. The format is about to hand them a decisive advantage they have not earned on the pitch or take it away in three weeks.

Monterrey and Querétaro played thirteen. Everybody else played fourteen. That game in hand is why both can still reach 32 points, a figure that equals Toluca’s maximum and sits one below Atlas’s.

The Format, and Why Seeding Is the Real Prize

Eighteen clubs, seventeen matchdays, top eight only. The Play-In was abolished by the league’s ownership assembly ahead of this tournament, so ninth place ends the season.

The bracket is fixed: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5.

And here is the clause that should be shaping every team’s run-in. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, if a tie is level on aggregate, the better-placed team in the general table advances. No extra time, no penalties; the regular season breaks the tie.

That turns the 4/5 line into the most valuable boundary in the table. Fourth place plays fifth and carries the tiebreak into it. Fifth place plays fourth and must win outright. The same logic applies on 3/6, 2/7, and 1/8.

Atlas are the club that stands to gain most from a rule they have the least claim to. Seven wins and three draws from fourteen, and twenty-six goals conceded against twenty-five scored. If they hold fourth, they take a tiebreak into a quarterfinal against the Toluca side with a plus-ten margin.

Toluca Are the Team the Table Is Lying About

Second-best goal difference in the league at plus ten. Fifth on points.

Only América’s plus fifteen is better. Toluca scored twenty-nine, the second-highest total in the division, and conceded nineteen, level with América. They sit below Cruz Azul and Guadalajara on plus nine each, and below an Atlas side being outscored.

Five draws from fourteen are where the points went. Six wins, five draws, three defeats, a team losing fewer matches than the three directly above it and converting fewer of the rest.

Their run-in is the hardest of anyone’s. América away on Saturday, Monterrey at home on 7 November, then Pachuca away on the final day. Two of those three are against sides currently in the top eight.

The Fight for Eighth Is Now a Fight Against Querétaro

Monterrey hold eighth on 20 points with a plus-five margin and a game in hand. Querétaro are ninth on the same 20 points with a minus-one margin and the same game in hand.

They are separated by goal difference and nothing else, and both can finish on 32.

Behind them: Santos on 19 with a level margin, Atlético de San Luis on 19 at minus three, Pumas on 17. Santos and San Luis both top out at 28, which would not have been enough to make the eight in most recent tournaments but is comfortably inside the range this one is producing.

And then there is Pachuca. Thirteenth on 16 points with a positive goal difference of plus three: the only club outside the places that is outscoring its opponents. Twenty-two scored, nineteen conceded, and four wins from fourteen. Their maximum is 25. On margin, they belong in the conversation; on results, they have three rounds to prove it and probably not enough points available.

The Bottom: Two Out, One Nearly

FC Juárez have five points from fourteen matches. One win. Minus twenty-four, with thirty-three conceded, the worst defensive record in the division by six. Their maximum is 14 points, which is below Atlante’s current total. They are out.

Necaxa are out too. Ten points, a maximum of 19, and eighth place is already 20.

Atlante are the third story and the one with context. Sixteenth on 14 points with a minus-six margin, in their first top-flight tournament since the Apertura 2014. They reached the division by buying Mazatlán’s affiliation certificate from Grupo Salinas, a deal worth around sixty-five million dollars that closed on 23 April 2026, after which Mazatlán was dissolved.

And the thing worth saying plainly: none of this threatens them. Promotion and relegation were abolished in 2020. Fourteen points from fourteen games in a division you bought your way into carries no sporting consequence whatsoever, and a maximum of 23 means their season ends on 22 November either way.

What Each Round Decides

Matchday 15: October 30 to November 1

Toluca at América (Sat) is the headline: first against fifth, the two best goal differences in the league. León at Cruz Azul (Sun) is sixth at second. Tijuana at Monterrey (Sat) is seventh against eighth, the only direct six-pointer of the weekend. Atlas travel to Atlético de San Luis (Fri), which is the fourth-placed side with a negative margin visiting a club that can still catch them.

Also: Atlante at Guadalajara, Querétaro at FC Juárez, Pumas at Puebla, Tigres at Pachuca, Necaxa at Santos.

Matchday 16 — November 6 to 8

Monterrey at Toluca (Sat), eighth at fifth, and the second of Toluca’s three fixtures against top eight opposition. Guadalajara at León (Sun) is third at sixth, which, under the bracket, is a preview of a quarterfinal. Cruz Azul at Tigres (Sat), Pachuca at Atlas (Sat), América at Pumas (Sat), Puebla at Querétaro (Sun), Santos at Atlante (Fri), FC Juárez at Atlético de San Luis (Fri), Tijuana at Necaxa (Fri).

Matchday 17 — November 20 to 22

Cruz Azul at Guadalajara (Sun) is the final-day fixture of the tournament. Both are on 26 points. Both have a maximum of 35. Second and third decide between themselves, in a stadium whose defense has conceded twelve goals, the fewest in the league.

América at Tigres (Sat), Toluca at Pachuca (Sat), Monterrey at Pumas (Sat), León at Santos (Sat), Atlas at FC Juárez (Fri), Atlante at Tijuana (Fri), Atlético de San Luis at Puebla (Fri), Necaxa at Querétaro (Sun).

The quarterfinals begin on November 25 and 26.

O que assistir

Whether Atlas holds fourth, because the format rewards it disproportionately. A side with a minus-one goal difference carrying an aggregate tiebreak into a quarterfinal is the clearest consequence of removing the Play-In and keeping the general-table rule.

Whether Toluca convert margin into position. Plus, ten and fifth place do not belong to the same team, and their last three fixtures are the hardest set in the division. If they finish fifth, they play fourth without the tiebreak, which is the worst outcome available to the second-best team on goal difference.

Whether Monterrey or Querétaro take eighth. Level on points, separated by a six-goal difference, both with a game in hand, and no safety net below.

And the final day. Cruz Azul at Guadalajara, level on 26, for second place and the 2 vs. 7 brackets instead of the 3 vs. 6. On current standings, that is the difference between facing Tijuana and facing León.

One thing we cannot tell you. Monterrey and Querétaro each have a game in hand, and we could not locate it on the published calendar. Both clubs’ maximum totals in the table above assume four remaining fixtures rather than three, and when that match is scheduled, it will change the shape of the eighth-place race more than any result this weekend.
