The excitement of the 2024 MLS season continues, and this past weekend we enjoyed an action-packed matchday 28 from start to finish. While there were a few surprises, the biggest story in North American soccer was the goals that rained down throughout the weekend.

After the last round, Inter Miami continues to extend its lead, now by eight points, over FC Cincinnati at the top of the Eastern Conference. On the other hand, in the West, LA Galaxy beat Atlanta United to maintain their lead over LAFC at the top of the table. However, keep in mind that LAFC has 3 games less and the difference between them is only 5 points, so, everything is in the hands of Steve Cherundolo’s team.

Let’s see what happened in the most interesting matches of the 28th MLS matchday.

MLS Matchday 28 Roundup: Minnesota vs. Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders stepped up in this away match to take an excellent 3-2 win over Minnesota United.

Things started even, but, the Sounders struck first in the 11th minute, when Jordan Morris scored the first goal of the match. However, Minnesota attacked relentlessly until they were fouled inside the opponent’s box and managed to equalize the score 1-1, after a penalty kick converted by Kelvin Yeboah in the 24th minute.

However, the Sounders continued their siege and, just 3 minutes later, managed to take the lead again thanks to a goal by Jackson Ragen.

At the start of the second half, Yeboah scored the 2-2 to give Minnesota some breathing space, but the joy would not last 20 minutes, as Albert Rusnák scored the definitive 3-2 in the 75th minute.

MLS Matchday 28 Roundup: NYC FC vs. Chicago Fire

Em uma disputa acirrada, o NYC FC não conseguiu vencer o Chicago Fire em casa e acabou dividindo os pontos após um empate por 2 a 2.

A partida esteve sempre nas mãos de Nova York, que começou jogando muito bem, com gols de Alonso Martínez aos 15 e 22 minutos. A partir daí, o time da Big Apple tomou a posse de bola, mas, aos poucos, foi perdendo o domínio, a ponto de, aos 78 minutos, Hugo Cuypers marcar o 1 a 2, o que, naquele momento, colocou muita pressão sobre o time local.

This pressure by the Chicago Fire took effect in the final seconds, as they generated a penalty in the 90+4′ minute, which was converted into a goal by Brian Gutiérrez and thus sentenced the match to a draw (2-2).

MLS Matchday 28 Roundup: Real Salt Lake vs. Terremotos de SJ

O Real Salt Lake continua indo de mal a pior neste ponto da temporada, já que, antes lutando pelo topo da Conferência Oeste, agora está lutando contra si mesmo para retomar o ritmo de jogo e voltar a vencer.

Embora seja verdade que nesta partida contra o SJ Earthquakes eles dominaram a bola e o jogo, não foram eficazes o suficiente para marcar gols que os levariam à vitória.

Após algumas tentativas de ambas as equipes nos primeiros minutos de jogo, foi o SJ Earthquakes quem abriu o placar aos 19 minutos, com um gol de Cristian Espinoza. O golpe foi duro para o RSL, que não conseguiu se recuperar e, aos 33 minutos, conseguiu fechar o placar com um gol de Amahl Pellegrino.

MLS Matchday 28 Roundup: LA Galaxy x Atlanta United

Por fim, temos o LA Galaxy continuando a mostrar seu alto nível de jogo e, principalmente, seu excelente ritmo após a chegada de Marco Reus, ao conquistar uma sólida vitória por 2 a 0 sobre o Atlanta United.

O jogo era de todos, apesar do Galaxy dominar a posse de bola com impressionantes 711 TP3T. No entanto, Atlanta não conseguiu aproveitar suas chances de gol para ser decisivo na partida.

Após um empate em 0 a 0 no primeiro tempo, as equipes voltaram com tudo nos 45 minutos seguintes. Aos 76 minutos, Riqui Puig marcou o 1 a 0 após um chute espetacular de fora da área.

Por fim, em outra jogada magistral de Riqui Puig e uma finalização dupla de Marco Reus, o alemão marcou o definitivo 2 a 0 aos 84 minutos, levando o Galaxy a uma estupenda vitória em casa.
