Sean Mannion is the fifth offensive coordinator Jalen Hurts has had in five years.
He is also installing a West Coast system that asks Hurts to work heavily from under centre, with his back to the defence on play-action, rather than from the shotgun view he has operated from throughout his career.
Philadelphia is favoured to win this division for a third straight NFL season at odds as short as +115. Dallas, which one projection rates at the same 12-5 record, is available at +500.

Here is the division five days out.
Philadelphia Eagles — The Favourite With the Most Change
Division odds: +115 to +140.
The Eagles return one of the most talented rosters in football. Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley are both back, and the defence remains among the best in the conference. None of that is in question.
What is in question is the offence, and it is a bigger question than the price suggests.
Philadelphia won the NFC East last season at 11-6, but the shape of that season matters. They raced to 8-2, então lost four of their final seven before falling at home to San Francisco in the wild-card round. A team that finished that way is not obviously a 46% favourite.
Then they changed the system. Sean Mannion arrives as an untested coordinator running a scheme that is a fundamental departure from how Philadelphia has operated: under centre, huddle-based, with Hurts turning his back to the defence on play-action. Learning a fifth system in five years while a new coordinator learns the job is a lot to ask in September.
They also traded a star wide receiver, which removes a known quantity from an offence already rebuilding its identity.
The cutdown was routine. Philadelphia kept four quarterbacks (Hurts, Tanner McKee, and Andy Dalton among them) and released veteran cornerback Ambry Thomas, guarda Michael Jordan, seventh-round pick Cole Wisniewski, e receptor Quez Watkins.
Prediction: 11-6, division winners. Still the best roster. Not the bet.
Dallas Cowboys — They Fixed the One Thing That Was Broken
Division odds: +500.
Dallas allowed 30.1 points per game last season, the worst figure in the NFL. That single number explains their entire year, because the offence was never the problem: they finished top five in scoring and yards per play.
The offseason was spent on the defence, and people around the league believe the improvement is real. That is the most important sentence in this division. A top-five offence with a functional defence is a contender; a top-five offence with the worst defence in football is 8-9.
The preseason was the most organised of any team in the league. Dallas went 2-0, beating Seattle 17-7 with 338 total yards and 11 of 15 on third down, then routing Arizona 34-13 while outgaining them 418 to 320. Joe Milton settled the backup job in a single evening: 9 of 13 for 176 yards with three total touchdowns.
They also solved a position problem with someone else’s money. Dallas acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones from Pittsburgh, sending 2027 third- and sixth-round picks while the Steelers attached a fourth-rounder of their own to move him. Jones started at both tackle spots in his career, and at a $1.5 million base salary, he is a cheap solution with real upside for a team that needed depth up front.
At cutdown, they released running back Jaydon Blue e receptor Denzel Mims.
Prediction: 10-7, wild card. The most improved roster in the division and the shortest distance between where they were and where they need to be.
Washington Commanders — Year Three for Jayden Daniels
Division odds: +500.
Washington looked like a coming contender in 2024 and did not follow it up. Last season was undone by three things: injuries, inconsistency from Jayden Daniels, e one of the league’s worst defences.
The quarterback news is genuinely good. Daniels is back for his third season under new offensive coordinator David Blough, and reports from camp have been strong: comfortable in the pocket, accurate downfield, in strong command of a system that asks him to work more under centre and call plays from a huddle. Dan Quinn has said he is further along than expected, and the injuries that disrupted 2025 appear to be behind him.
The concern is everywhere else, and it is mostly the offensive line and the front seven.Laremy Tunsil picked up an injury, Johnny Newton went down, and Allegretti and Amos both struggled to get back onto the field. Small injuries kept accumulating through camp at precisely the positions Washington could least afford them.
They released quarterback Sam Hartman e receptor Van Jefferson at cutdown.
One projection has Washington at 5-12, which looks harsh for a team with this quarterback. The gap between that number and the +500 price tells you how much disagreement there is about them.
Prediction: 8-9. Daniels is good enough to keep them competitive. The roster around him is not good enough to do more than that.
New York Giants — A Real Coach, a Long Injury List
Division odds: +575.
The roster has been quietly assembled. The health has not cooperated.
John Harbaugh is an upgrade at head coach: the sort of hire that is worth wins on its own. Malik Nabers is back and on track for Week 1 after his ACL tear, and Jaxson Dart now has a year of experience in a young offence with a respectable defence around it.
The injury list is the problem, and it is long. All three starting cornerbacks have missed practice time. Roy Robertson-Harris tore his Achilles and is out for the season. Centre John Michael Schmitz has been in concussion protocol.
And there is a number that should worry New York more than any of those. Dart has been to the medical tent in 43% of his career starts. For a young quarterback behind a line missing its centre, that is the statistic that decides whether this is a step forward or another lost year.
Cutdown day closed two chapters. The Giants released Evan Neal e Jalin Hyatt (both former high draft picks) along with quarterback Brandon Allen and receiver Braxton Berrios. Moving on from two great selections in a single afternoon is a front office admitting its previous evaluations were wrong, which is uncomfortable and correct.
Prediction: 7-10. The highest ceiling in the bottom half of this division if the injuries clear. They have not cleared.
Predicted Order of Finish
1. Philadelphia Eagles — 11-6, division winners2. Dallas Cowboys — 10-7, wild card3. Washington Commanders — 8-94. New York Giants — 7-10
Division odds: Águias +115 to +140, Cowboys +500, Commanders +500, Giants +575.
The Positions Worth Taking
Dallas at +500 is the best value on this board, and it is not close.
We are predicting Philadelphia to win the division. Those two statements are not in conflict, and the difference between them is the whole point of betting.
At least one projection rates Dallas and Philadelphia at the same 12-5 record. The market prices the Eagles at roughly 46% and the Cowboys at roughly 17%. You do not need Dallas to be the better team; you need them to win the division more than one time in six, and a top-five offence that just fixed the league’s worst defence clears that bar comfortably.
Philadelphia at +115 is the one to avoid. Not because the Eagles are bad, but because you are laying near-even money on a team installing a new scheme with an untested coordinator, having traded a star receiver, after finishing 4-7 across its final eleven games, including the playoffs. Favourite prices should not come with that many open questions.
Washington at +500 is fair. The quarterback is a genuine asset, and the rest of the roster is not there yet. Priced about right.
Pass on the Giants at +575. Harbaugh will improve them. Three injured starting cornerbacks and a quarterback who has needed the medical tent in 43% of his starts is not a division-winning profile.
What Decides It
How quickly Hurts adapts to Mannion’s system. A fifth coordinator in five years, running a scheme built on under-center play-action, is the single largest variable in the division. If it clicks by October, Philadelphia three-peats. If it does not, +500 on Dallas looks obvious in hindsight.
Whether Dallas’s defensive improvement is real. Everything rests on it. The evidence is positive and entirely unproven; August performances against backups are not the same as stopping NFC offences in December.
Washington’s offensive line. Tunsil’s health and Newton’s availability decide whether Daniels gets to play the season his camp suggests he is ready for.
Jaxson Dart staying upright. The Giants’ entire ceiling rests on a quarterback who has struggled to finish games.
A three-time favourite rebuilding its offence, a challenger that fixed the worst defence in football, a quarterback in year three with no line in front of him, and a good coach inheriting an injury list. Philadelphia probably wins it. Dallas is where the money is.
