Seattle won the Super Bowl. They are not favoured to win their own division.

The Seahawks beat the Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game in January, then beat New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX for the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy. Los Angeles responded by signing the Defensive Player of the Year.

This is the strongest division in football; it contains three legitimate contenders, and it opens the season with two of them playing each other on the other side of the planet.

Here is the division five days out.

Los Angeles Rams — Hard to Find a Weakness

Division odds: -115, implying roughly 53%. Win total: 11.5 — the joint-highest in the NFL.

The Rams were four points from the Super Bowl. They lost the NFC Championship 31-27 in Seattle, and then had an offseason that answered the question of what they were missing.

They signed Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Cleveland traded him in a deal that returned Jared Verse, a first-round pick, and additional compensation- a substantial price- and the Rams paid it because their window is now.

They also traded for cornerback Trent McDuffie, which addressed the secondary in the same window. Add an elite pass rusher and a top cover corner to a team that reached the conference title game, and the honest assessment is the one being made around the league: you have to struggle to find a weakness on this roster.

The one caution is the number rather than the team. An 11.5 win total is the joint-highest in football, and totals that high require a team to be excellent e healthy across seventeen games. The Rams have the profile to justify it. They also have almost no margin for error.

Prediction: 12-5, division winners. The most complete roster in the NFC.

Seattle Seahawks — Defending Champions, Second in the Odds

Division odds: +220. Win total: 10.5 — their highest since 2017.

The reigning Super Bowl champions, and they earned it in the hardest possible way: beating the Rams in Seattle, then dismantling New England in the final.

The championship run showed a complete team. Sam Darnold threw three touchdowns in the NFC Championship. Kenneth Walker III produced 111 total yards and a score. Jaxon Smith-Njigba led all receivers with 153 yards and a touchdown on ten receptions. And Mike Macdonald’s “Dark Side” defence made the fourth-down stop that ended the Rams’ season.

That is a title won by the quarterback, the run game, the number one receiver, and the defence in the same afternoon. Very few champions can say that.

So why are they second? Because the team they beat added the Defensive Player of the Year and an elite cornerback, and Seattle’s own offseason was quieter. This is the rare case where demoting a defending champion is genuinely defensible rather than lazy: the club above them measurably improved.

Prediction: 11-6, wild card. Champions who did not get worse, in a division where the team above them got significantly better.

San Francisco 49ers — The Talent Has Never Been the Question

Division odds: +340. Win total: 10.5.

When fully healthy, San Francisco has arguably the most talented roster in football.

They have not been fully healthy in consecutive seasons since 2019. That sentence is the entire 49ers section, and it has been the entire 49ers section for six years. The talent evaluation is not in dispute; the availability is.

Their season opens in Australia, and the circumstances are unusual enough to matter. San Francisco faces the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday 10 September: the NFL’s first regular-season game in Melbourne, in front of an expected sell-out at a stadium holding more than 100,000.

The 49ers were designated the home team, which is how a Week 1 fixture between two California clubs ends up on the other side of the world. A 200-person travelling party arrived on a 15-hour chartered flight and will spend a full week acclimatising. It is part of a record nine international games the NFL is staging in 2026 across four continents.

Whether that helps or hurts is genuinely unclear. A week of controlled preparation with no distractions can work in a team’s favour. So can not flying fifteen hours before your first competitive game. What is certain is that San Francisco opens against the division favourite with a variable nobody can model.

Prediction: 10-7, wild card. Third in this division would win two others outright.

Arizona Cardinals — Starting Over Completely

Division odds: 100-1. Win total: 3.5.

A full organisational reset following a 3-14 season.

Jonathan Gannon was fired.Mike LaFleur takes over as head coach. And Kyler Murray was released: he signed a one-year deal with Minnesota in March and will start Week 1 for the Vikings, which is a reminder that Arizona’s problem was never solely the quarterback.

A 3.5 win total and 100-1 division odds are the market saying, correctly, that this is a two-to-three-year project that began four months ago. Arizona is not competing in 2026 and is not pretending to.

What to actually watch: whether LaFleur establishes an identity, and who plays quarterback well enough to be part of the next Cardinals team. Those questions get answered this season even though the wins do not come.

Prediction: 4-13. The clearest last place in football.

Predicted Order of Finish

1. Los Angeles Rams — 12-5, division winners2. Seattle Seahawks — 11-6, wild card3. San Francisco 49ers — 10-7, wild card4. Arizona Cardinals — 4-13

Division odds: Carneiros -115, Seahawks +220, 49ers +340, Cardinals 100-1.

Three teams from this division should make the playoffs. The gap between third place here and first place in the NFC South is roughly two wins in the wrong direction.

The Positions Worth Taking

Seattle at +220 is the best number, with a caveat we should be honest about.

We have spent this week noting that defending champions get demoted too readily by the market. This is the one division where the demotion is justified: the Rams added the Defensive Player of the Year and a top cornerback, and Seattle did not respond in kind.

That said: you are getting better than 2-to-1 on the reigning Super Bowl champion, who beat the favourite in that same building eight months ago. The market has Seattle at roughly 31%. A team that just won everything, in a division it won by beating this exact opponent, is worth more than 31%.

The Rams at -115 are fair rather than valuable. Everything about Los Angeles is genuinely impressive, and all of it is priced. Laying odds-on for a team carrying an 11.5 win total leaves nothing for you if they are merely very good rather than exceptional.

San Francisco at +340 is the contrarian position. If the 49ers stay healthy (which they have not managed in consecutive years since 2019), they win this division. That is a real if, and +340 is roughly the right compensation for it. Worth a small stake, not a serious one.

Avoid the Cardinals at any price. 100-1 on a 3.5-win team is not a lottery ticket; it is a donation.

What Decides It

The Melbourne opener. Two of the three contenders play each other in Week 1, fifteen hours of flying from home. Divisional games count double in the tiebreakers, and this one is played under conditions neither team has experienced.

Whether Garrett changes the Rams’ ceiling. Los Angeles lost the conference championship by four points. Adding the best defensive player in football to a team that close is exactly how a contender becomes a favourite; if he stays on the field.

Seattle’s response to success. Repeating is the hardest thing in the sport, and the Seahawks did not have a loud offseason. Whether that reads as confidence or complacency is the season’s question in Seattle.

San Francisco’s medical room. Same as every year.

A defending Super Bowl champion priced second, a favourite that added the Defensive Player of the Year, the most talented roster in football that cannot stay healthy, and a rebuild at 100-1. Three of these teams will probably make the playoffs. The one paying more than 2-to-1 just won the whole thing.
