Yankees de Nova York<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Brian Cashman did not just fail to fix the roster. He made it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Yankees added Heliot Ramos, who should help against left-handed pitching, and Luis Garc\u00eda Jr., a bigger upgrade against righties. Both are useful, controllable pieces. That is the case for the defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everything else is damning. New York did not add a single catcher; the most obvious hole on the roster. Adley Rutschman, the perfect fit, went to Boston. Liam Hicks went to Tampa Bay. Cincinnati would not part with Tyler Stephenson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the bullpen, already a weakness, got thinner. Cashman sent Yovanny Cruz to Washington in the Garc\u00eda deal and shipped Camilo Doval to Pittsburgh. A team that needed relief help finished the day with less of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Rays and Red Sox both unequivocally improved. The Yankees entered the deadline with two clear problems and exited with the same two problems plus a weaker bullpen. Calls for Cashman’s job were already there. They will get louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cervejarias Milwaukee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Milwaukee could have had Tarik Skubal. Reporting indicates they could have landed him while keeping top prospect Jes\u00fas Made. They chose not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, they acquired Dustin May, JoJo Romero, and Antonio Senzatela. A package most analysts think they overpaid for, particularly the May and Romero deal with St. Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Brewers are a genuinely well-run organisation. They plan ahead, they build depth, they make the playoffs almost every year. That is also the criticism: they consistently refuse to make the win-now move that would turn them from a playoff team into a title favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The context makes it worse. The Dodgers embarrassed Milwaukee in last season’s NLCS. Milwaukee had the prospect capital to close that gap and declined, then watched Los Angeles take the best pitcher on the market anyway. They will win a fourth straight division title. At some point that has to stop being the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Atlanta Braves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
An eight-game lead in the NL East and a roster capable of troubling the Dodgers when healthy, and Alex Anthopoulos did almost nothing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The additions: Lane Thomas, a veteran outfielder who hits left-handed pitching well but carries a .719 OPS. Tyler Mahle, a rental with a 5.13 ERA. Bailey Falter, who has a 13.97 ERA and is currently in Triple-A. Brent Suter, a serviceable second left-handed reliever with a 4.12 ERA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Atlanta’s single most urgent need was a playoff-calibre starting pitcher. They did not get one. They got innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Braves are going to win their division comfortably. They also fell further behind the team they will have to beat in October, on the same weekend that team acquired Skubal. Improving at the margins while your primary rival adds an ace is not standing still. It is losing ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Detroit Tigers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Trading Skubal was defensible. Detroit is not contending; he can reach free agency after the season, and the return was reasonable. Hope and Ryan both have real upside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What makes no sense is everything after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tigers moved Skubal 48 hours before the deadline and then did nothing essentially until 6:00 PM Monday, when they finally sent Casey Mize to San Diego. They traded their two best pitchers and got good value for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then they kept Gleyber Torres and Kenley Jansen, both of whom can be free agents this winter, in a market where contenders were desperate for right-handed bats and bullpen help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why sell if you are only going to sell halfway? If Detroit was going to be this inactive, holding Skubal into the offseason to build a bigger market was the better play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cincinnati Reds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The clearest failure of the entire deadline, in either direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cincinnati traded Nathaniel Lowe and Caleb Ferguson. That was the extent of it. This is a team 5.5 games out of a playoff spot with six clubs ahead of them, coming off a stretch as one of the worst in the National League since April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They did not buy. They did not sell. Brady Singer stayed, with no clarity on whether a qualifying offer is coming. Eugenio Su\u00e1rez stayed. Tyler Stephenson stayed, on a day when the Yankees were desperate for a catcher and paying for one. Brock Burke stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A roster full of expiring contracts on a team going nowhere, and Nick Krall held nearly all of them. There is no strategic reading of that decision that works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Texas Rangers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Rangers traded Josh Smith and Josh Stephan to Toronto for Adam Macko. That was their deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Texas came in off a disappointing road trip in an awkward spot, and reports emerged that they were open to moving most of the veteran roster. Then they picked neither direction. No meaningful buying to salvage the season. No meaningful selling to build toward the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not trading Jacob deGrom is understandable \u2014 he holds a full no-trade clause. That does not explain the rest of it. Texas had deals available and made none of them, and now carries an expensive roster that does not project to go anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Team That Made Everyone Else Look Bad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Context matters, and the context is that the Dodgers did not have to sacrifice anything meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Skubal has reestablished himself completely after elbow surgery earlier this year, ranking second in strikeout-to-walk ratio among pitchers with at least 70 innings and posting the second-lowest SIERA in baseball. Los Angeles acquired him without touching the top tier of a very good farm system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were already the World Series favourite. They now have arguably the best pitcher in the sport added to a roster that has won back-to-back titles, and they kept their best prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cubs were the next most aggressive, landing Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and Ryan Zeferjahn. Boston made the biggest hitting splash with Rutschman, sending Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon, Carlos Narv\u00e1ez, Enddy Az\u00f3car and a player to be named later to Baltimore. Tampa Bay added Freddy Peralta and Liam Hicks. Pittsburgh rebuilt an entire bullpen around Luke Weaver without touching its best prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those teams answered the question. The six above did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
