The best goal difference in the Premier League does not belong to Manchester City.

It belongs to Brighton<\/strong>, who scored 16 goals in five matches<\/strong> (three more than anyone else), conceded five, and who spent Saturday afternoon taking Arsenal apart 3-0<\/strong> at the Amex.

They are one of six clubs currently outperforming what August expected of them, and two of those six were promoted in May.

Five clubs are unbeaten<\/strong>: City, Brentford, Leeds, Liverpool and Everton, and four of those five have drawn three of their five matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brighton: The Best Attack and the Best Goal Difference<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sixteen goals in five matches. Five conceded. A goal difference of +11 in a league where the leaders are on +8.<\/strong>

Saturday was the statement. Arsenal arrived at the Amex with a perfect record and a nine-match league-winning run<\/strong> stretching back into last season. They left having been beaten 3-0 without ever being in the game.

Pascal Gro\u00df<\/strong> struck from outside the box on 31 minutes. Charalampos Kostoulas<\/strong> doubled it on the stroke of half-time, also from distance. Chema Andr\u00e9s<\/strong> headed in a Gro\u00df corner shortly before the hour. Two long-range finishes and a set piece; Arsenal was not unlucky.

Why this counts as exceeding expectations rather than a good week:<\/strong> Brighton have now produced the division’s best attacking return across five matches against varied opposition, and the defensive number is just as good. Sixteen goals scored is a title-race figure. Five conceded is a title-race figure. They are third only because of one defeat and a draw.

The case against:<\/strong> a 1-1 draw with Leeds on 5 September is the sort of afternoon that separates them from the two clubs above. Ten points from a possible fifteen is very good; it is not what +11 suggests it should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brentford: Unbeaten and Nobody Has Noticed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two wins, three draws, no defeats. Ten goals scored, four conceded, +6, the third-best goal difference in the league.<\/strong>

Brentford have the joint-longest unbeaten run in the division at five matches and sit fourth. They have conceded fewer than every club except Leeds and Everton.

Three draws are the story in both directions.<\/strong> It is why they are on nine points rather than thirteen, and it is also why they have not lost. A side that does not get beaten in September tends to still be in the conversation in January, and Brentford have done it while scoring at two a game.

The case against:<\/strong> converting draws into wins is the hardest upgrade in football, and a club operating at Brentford’s budget usually must do it through the market rather than form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everton: The Meanest Defense in the League<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Six goals scored, three conceded. Unbeaten in five.<\/strong>

Everton allowed fewer goals than anyone in the Premier League alongside Leeds, and they beat Ipswich 1-0 on Saturday to stay unbeaten. Seventh on nine points, with the same 2-3-0 record as the three clubs directly above them.

Three goals conceded in five matches is the number worth sitting on.<\/strong> Manchester City have conceded five. Arsenal conceded four. Everton are keeping pace defensively with clubs that spend several times what they do.

The case against:<\/strong> six goals scored is thin, and three draws in five suggest a team that is hard to beat rather than one going anywhere. That profile wins you comfort, not places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hull City: Still There<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eighth with eight points, from a club that opened the season as the shortest-priced relegation favorite in the division at 3\/10.<\/strong>

We flagged Hull after their opening-day 2-0 win over Manchester United<\/strong> and wrote that a side capable of that result was not the worst team in the league. Two match weeks ago they were third with three clean sheets in three.

The regression has arrived, and it is mild.<\/strong> They lost 2-1 at Newcastle on Saturday, the clean-sheet run is over, and they have now conceded four. Eighth place and eight points from five is still miles beyond what 3\/10 implied.

This remains the best call we have made this season<\/strong>, and the honest update is that the version of Hull who had not conceded a goal was always going to concede one eventually. What matters is that the points have kept arriving.

The case against:<\/strong> +2 goal difference and six goals scored. The margins are thin, and a club at this level cannot afford an injury to the spine of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ipswich Town: Eleventh, and Nobody Predicted That Either<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The second promoted club outperforming, and the one getting no attention at all.<\/strong>

Ipswich are eleventh with six points with duas vit\u00f3rias<\/strong> already. Their goal difference is -4, and they lost 1-0 at Everton on Saturday, so this is not a story about underlying excellence.

It is a story about banking wins early.<\/strong> Two victories inside five match weeks is exactly what a promoted side needs, because those points were available against opposition that will be harder to beat in February. Six points from five is a survival pace.

The case against:<\/strong> seven scored and eleven conceded is a relegation profile, and the sample is small enough that two bad weeks put them 17th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leeds United: Unbeaten in Their Second Season Back<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fifth on nine points, unbeaten, with three conceded; level with Everton for the best defensive record in the division.<\/strong>

Leeds drew three of five, including 1-1 with Brighton<\/strong>, and lost to nobody. Seven scored, three conceded, +4.

Fifth place after five matches is a European position<\/strong>, and for a club whose recent history in this division has been about remaining rather than ambition, that is a great change of attitude.

The case against:<\/strong> the same three-draw problem as Brentford and Everton, and a squad that has not been tested by a congested fixture list yet.

Manchester City: Fulfilling Expectations in the Meanest Context<\/strong>

Let us deal with the obvious objection first. Is a club that spent what City spent this summer exceeding expectations by leading the Premier League? No.<\/strong> Leading the league is the job. Nobody hands out credit for it.

But that is not the context this season is being played in.<\/strong>

City lost the best manager in their history and several of their most recognizable players within a very short span. Pep Guardiola left in the summer after ten years and twenty trophies<\/strong>, closing with a domestic cup double, and with Arsenal taking the title off them. A departure of that size normally costs a club a season or even more while it works out what it is (Look at Manchester United).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
