Two teams are 5-0, and one of them is on a bye.<\/strong> Minnesota sits out Week 6 alongside Cincinnati, Detroit, and Miami, which leaves San Francisco as the only unbeaten side (with no rest week) in action, and the 49ers are laying 7.5 points to a Washington team that just blew a fourteen-point lead and tied.

We analyze the games of the NFL best four sides each week. With the Vikings idle, that means San Francisco, Kansas City, Jacksonville, and Baltimore<\/strong>: the 5-0 team, the 4-0 team, and the two 4-1 teams with the best point differentials in their conferences.

The totals are the story this week, and they are moving in both directions.<\/strong> Buffalo-Las Vegas opened at 47.5 and is now 53.5<\/strong>, a six-point climb. Arizona-Rams opened at 46.5 and is now 52.5<\/strong>, with the spread stretching from -12.5 to -13.5<\/strong>. Against that, three numbers have collapsed: Pittsburgh-Tampa Bay from 45.5 to 40.5<\/strong>, Baltimore-Cleveland from 44.5 to 40.5<\/strong>, and Tennessee-Indianapolis from 48.5 to 44.5<\/strong>. Seven of the fourteen games carry a spread of three points or fewer.<\/strong>

San Francisco is 5-0 with a +61-point differential, the best in football by sixteen points.<\/strong> They won 32-29 at Seattle on Sunday, on the road against the defending champions, and they have done the whole thing without Nick Bosa, without Ricky Pearsall for the season, and with Brock Purdy playing like an MVP candidate.

Washington are 1-3-1 at minus-34<\/strong> and arrive off the strangest result of the season: a 27-27 tie in which they led the Giants by fourteen points with eleven minutes left in regulation.

The model wants more of San Francisco than the market does.<\/strong> ESPN’s FPI makes the 49ers favorites by 11.2 points with an 86%-win probability<\/strong>, against a posted line of 7.5: a gap of 3.7 points, the largest disagreement on this week’s board.<\/strong> And the total has not moved a half-point from its 50.5 open, which is unusual on a streak where two numbers have swung six points.

Jacksonville conceded nine points in first halves all season.<\/strong> Not nine a game, nine in total, across five games. Their +53-point differential is the best in the AFC<\/strong>, ahead of Kansas City’s +41, and they are 4-1 on a three-game winning streak after beating Philadelphia 19-17 at Tottenham on a 57-yard Cam Little field goal at the end.

This is their second consecutive game in London<\/strong>, at a different stadium, and long snapper Ross Matiscik is unavailable after the Eagles game.

Houston is 1-4 but at minus 2<\/strong>: four of their defeats came by a combined eighteen points before they finally won 26-3 over Tennessee, with C.J. Stroud going 26 of 34.

FPI makes Jacksonville favorites by 3.6 with a 64% probability, essentially agreeing with the three-point line.<\/strong> When the model and the market land on the same number, there is rarely an edge on the side. The variable here is not the football: it is a fifth-seeded road trip and a second week abroad<\/strong>, and Houston is a better team than 1-4 suggests.

Kansas City is 4-0 with a +41 differential and has had a week off.<\/strong> Kenneth Walker III leads the NFL in rushing and has transformed an offence that had stopped attacking deep, and the bye arrived at a useful moment with Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice both hurt.

The Chargers are 0-5 at minus-45<\/strong>, beaten 23-17 by Denver, with an offensive line that has not held up in a single game.

This is the clearest case on the board of a number running past the model.FPI has Kansas City by 6.1 with a 72% probability. The line is 8.5.<\/strong> That is 2.4 points of air, and it is the same shape of mispricing that caught us out on Buffalo in Week 4, a good team laying more than the model thinks they should against an opponent everybody has written off.

The total dropping four points to 42.5 reinforces it.<\/strong> A low-scoring game is a close game, and 8.5 is a lot of points in one.

Prediction: Chiefs 27-20 Chargers<\/strong>, the side, not the spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltimore is 4-1 and have won three straight, the most recent without Lamar Jackson.<\/strong> Tyler Huntley went 24 of 32 for 201 yards and two touchdowns in Atlanta, hit Devontez Walker with 40 seconds left in regulation, and scored the winner himself on a one-yard sneak in overtime.

Jackson is listed as questionable as of Tuesday<\/strong> with the sprained left ankle, and he is one of four Ravens carrying that status. Centre Cam Jurgens<\/strong> is also questionable, on a line that already has Ethan Pocic and Jovaughn Gwyn on injured reserve.

Cleveland is 3-2 with a minus-19-point differential<\/strong> after losing 17-12 at the Jets. They have not scored more than 27 points in any game this season.

The model likes Baltimore more than the line does (FPI by 6.5 against a posted 4.5<\/strong>), which is the opposite of the Kansas City situation and the reason this is the more attractive of the two favorites. The four-point drop in the total to 40.5 says the market expects a defensive game<\/strong>, and Cleveland’s 3-2 record sitting on a losing differential is the single clearest regression case in the conference.

Prediction: Ravens 23-17 Browns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ESPN’s model disagrees with the market on the side in two games, and both times it takes the road underdog.<\/strong> At Philadelphia, the Eagles are laying 1.5 and FPI favors Carolina by 0.2 with a 50.5% probability<\/strong>: a genuine coin flip on a team that has lost three straights. At Lambeau, Green Bay is laying 1.5, and FPI favors Dallas by 3.4 with a 63% probability<\/strong>, which is a five-point disagreement on a game with a 52.5 total.

Buffalo-Las Vegas has the biggest total move of the week<\/strong>, from 47.5 to 53.5, with the Bills lying 6 and FPI only giving them 3.7, another number past the model.

Arizona at the Rams is the biggest spread of the week at -13.5<\/strong>, having opened at -12.5, with the total up six points to 52.5. The Cardinals are 1-4 at minus-54.

Chicago at Atlanta is a game to watch for anyone tracking our mistakes.<\/strong> We ranked the Bears fourth in the league on Friday; they lost 31-7 at Lambeau, and their differential fell from +47 to +23. They are now 3-point favorites in Atlanta with FPI backing them by 5.6.

And Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay carries the week’s second-largest total collapse<\/strong>, from 45.5 to 40.5, in a game where the model and the market agree exactly: Steelers by 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
