NFL Preseason Week 2 Predictions

NFL Preseason Week 2 Predictions

Last Updated on agosto 11, 2026 7:42 pm by Erwin Noguera

The real preseason starts Thursday. After a single game in Canton to open the calendar, the NFL goes to a full slate on August 13, and four of those matchups carry storylines that will still matter in September.

Aaron Rodgers faces Green Bay. Mike McCarthy does too, from the same sideline. The first overall pick meets the rookie who just posted a 125.4 passer rating in his debut. And A.J. Brown puts on a Patriots uniform for the first time.

The best storyline of the preseason, and it is not close.

Aaron Rodgers faces the Packers for the first time since leaving. So does Mike McCarthy, who coached him in Green Bay for a decade and is now in his first season running Pittsburgh. Two men who defined an era of Packers football, on the opposite sideline, in the same game.

McCarthy has said publicly he wants Rodgers to play in the preseason, and Rodgers has indicated he is on board, a noteworthy decision for a 42-year-old quarterback who sat out preseason action entirely a year ago.

What to watch: The snap count. How long McCarthy leaves Rodgers out there tells you how seriously Pittsburgh is treating this season, with a backloaded schedule and a division containing two Super Bowl contenders.

Green Bay is going the other way, handing extended reps to younger players. Running back MarShawn Lloyd has been one of the standouts of their camp after returning to full health and should see significant work. The Packers are also without Micah Parsons until at least mid-October following his torn ACL.

Prediction: Steelers 20, Packers 16. McCarthy wants a performance in this specific game and has his starting quarterback playing. Green Bay is evaluating.

The bet: Two strong defences and both teams rotating heavily after the opening drives. Under 37.5 is the play here.

Arizona Cardinals at Las Vegas Raiders

ChancesTotal
Arizona Cardinals +1.5 (-105) — Moneyline +110Over 39.5 (-110)
Las Vegas Raiders -1.5 (-115) — Moneyline -130Under 39.5 (-110)

Two of the most closely watched quarterback situations in football, in the same building.

Carson Beck was the best player on the field in the Hall of Fame Game — 15 of 19 for 188 yards, a touchdown, no interceptions, a 125.4 rating. He did it against second- and third-stringers, and he did it looking like a quarterback who had seen those problems before.

Across from him is Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick, whose entire preseason is an audition against himself. Klint Kubiak prefers to start a veteran from day one, and Kirk Cousins remains the Week 1 plan. Nothing changes a franchise’s timeline faster than a rookie flashing.

What to watch: Whether Beck sustains it. One excellent half is a data point; two is a trend, and Arizona’s rebuild timeline shifts entirely if their third-round pick is genuinely ready. Watch his ball placement on shorter timing routes, the consistent knock through camp, and the thing he answered emphatically in Canton.

For Las Vegas, watch how much Mendoza plays and how quickly he processes.

Prediction: Cardinals 24, Raiders 20. Beck is the most in-form quarterback in this game, and Arizona has a live rep in Mike LaFleur’s system already banked. Las Vegas is still installing.

The bet:Cardinals +1.5. Taking points with the quarterback who just torched a defence is the straightforward play. This also has the highest total on the slate at 39.5, which the market has priced correctly.

Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots

ChancesTotal
Indianapolis Colts +1.5 (-105) — Moneyline +114Over 38.5 (-115)
New England Patriots -1.5 (-115) — Moneyline -134Under 38.5 (-105)

The first look at A.J. Brown in a Patriots uniform.

New England made the best offensive addition of the offseason, giving Drake Maye, already an MVP-calibre quarterback, the elite receiver he did not have. Whether Brown plays meaningful snaps is doubtful, but the pairing is the reason to tune in. The Patriots will mostly use this to evaluate depth behind Maye, with several young players fighting for roster spots.

Indianapolis has a settled starter and an unsettled backup. Daniel Jones is firmly established as QB1. Behind him, Anthony Richardson Sr. and rookie Riley Leonard are competing for the primary backup role, which makes every snap they take genuinely meaningful.

What to watch: Even a handful of Maye-to-Brown reps would tell you something about how New England intends to deploy him. On the Colts side, the Richardson-Leonard competition is the most interesting backup battle on the slate.

Prediction: Patriots 21, Colts 17. New England has the better roster top to bottom and is at home.

The bet:Colts +1.5. Indianapolis has more quarterback depth actively competing for something, and motivated backups outperform their price in August. A one-and-a-half point cushion is worth taking.

Detroit Lions at Cincinnati Bengals

ChancesTotal
Detroit Lions +3.5 (-110) — Moneyline +158Over 37.5 (-115)
Cincinnati Bengals -3.5 (-110) — Moneyline -188Under 37.5 (-105)

The largest spread of the four, and there is a clear reason for it.

Zac Taylor has confirmed that Cincinnati’s starters, including Burrow, will play at least a short stretch. Detroit is expected to use the game to evaluate younger depth and recent additions. That asymmetry is the entire line.

Burrow is back, the defensive front has been rebuilt, and the schedule is among the easiest in the league. The caveat everyone in Ohio already knows is that the Bengals start slowly almost every year, and Taylor enters this season on the hot seat after three straight campaigns without a playoff appearance.

Detroit arrives with two offensive line competitions unresolved. At right tackle, rookie Blake Miller was expected to walk in, but Larry Borom is a genuine option. At left guard, Christian Mahogany has the inside track after a poor season, with Ben Bartch and Juice Scruggs pushing.

What to watch: Detroit’s offensive line, which will determine whether this offence returns to what it was. Both battles are open with cutdown day on August 30 approaching. Jahmyr Gibbs has not been practising amid contract discussions, so do not expect to see him.

Prediction: Bengals 24, Lions 17. Starters playing against a team evaluating depth is the most reliable edge available in preseason handicapping.

The bet: Bengals -3.5. The rare preseason spread with a genuine informational reason behind it. Once the rotations take over, it becomes a coin flip, but Cincinnati should build enough of a cushion in the opening drives.

What Thursday Actually Decides

Preseason games do not count, but three things from this slate carry into September.

Beck’s second act. Arizona drafted him in the third round to develop behind Jacoby Brissett, who has a reworked $15.5 million deal. Another strong showing and the Cardinals have a genuine long-term answer rather than a project.

How much Rodgers plays. McCarthy putting his 42-year-old quarterback on the field in August is a signal about how Pittsburgh views this season.

Detroit’s line. Two starting jobs open on the most important unit for a team trying to recover from a disappointing year, with under three weeks until cuts.

A note on preseason totals. Sportsbooks post low numbers because starters do not play deep into games, but backups competing for roster spots often play aggressively and produce more scoring than expected. Blindly taking the under is not a strategy. Check the quarterback rotations first.

Six games Thursday. Two more weeks of preseason. The regular season opens September 9.
