MLS Playoff Race: Who Is Positioned for the Postseason

Orlando City are sixth in the Eastern Conference with a goal difference of -15.

FC Cincinnati are seventh with -7. Both would qualify directly for Round One if the season ended today. Both have conceded 56 goals.

That is the MLS playoff race in one line: nine of fifteen teams qualify in each conference, and the real contest is not about getting in. It is about the three clubs separating at the top and everybody else arriving in November as fodder.

How the Format Actually Works

Worth being precise, because the structure decides everything.

The top nine in each conference qualify.Seeds 1 through 7 go directly into the Round One best-of-three series. Seeds 8 and 9 encontrar-se em um single Wild Card game, and the winner is rewarded with a series against the conference’s number one seed.

So the difference between seventh and eighth is not a place in the bracket. It is the difference between a three-match series and a one-off game followed by the best team in the conference.

The regular season ends Saturday 7 November.

Conferência Leste

Nashville have the best record in the league: 16 wins, five draws, three defeats, and 19 goals conceded in 24 matches. Nobody else in either conference is close to that defensive figure.

The gap between fifth and sixth is eight points, which is the clearest dividing line in either conference. Above it: five teams who can win a series. Below it: Orlando and Cincinnati holding direct-entry places with negative goal differences.

Toronto is a point outside the bracket on 29, level with NYCFC and behind on goal difference.

Conferência Ocidental

The West is far tighter and far better. Six teams sit within eight points of the lead, and the gap from second to sixth is five points.

Vancouver’s +31 goal difference is the best in MLS, built on 52 scored and 21 conceded: the same profile as Nashville, and with a game in hand on most of the conference.

Colorado and Portland are level on 32, separated by goal difference for the final direct-entry place. That is the most consequential single-point margin in the league.

The Supporters’ Shield

Nashville 53. Vancouver 46. Inter Miami 44. Houston 43.

Nashville’s lead is seven points with Vancouver holding a game in hand. It is not settled, and the Shield matters beyond the trophy: the winner gets the best available path through a single-elimination bracket, and the top three all secure CONCACAF Champions Cup qualification.

Inter Miami: Second, and Still Without a Manager

The most unusual situation in the league.

Javier Mascherano resigned on 14 April. Guillermo Hoyos took charge on an interim basis for four months. On August 27, the club appointed Kily González, but a pending work permit has kept him from officially taking over.

They have improved anyway. A fortnight ago, Miami were five matches without a win and conceding 2.4 goals per game. They then beat CF Montréal 7-1 (the largest home win in MLS this season) drew 1-1 at Chicago, and sit second in the East on 44 points.

Messi is the reason. He is tied for the league’s leading scorer on 18 goals and has added 12 assists. No other player in MLS is close to that combination.

The problem is unchanged, and it is structural. Miami have scored 59 goals, more than any club in the league. They have also conceded 44. Nashville have conceded 19 and Vancouver 21. In a best-of-three series against either of them, that difference is the entire tie.

Nashville: The Best-Positioned Team in MLS

We wrote a fortnight ago that Nashville were “the most complete team in the league on the two measures that matter: points on the board and players on the field.” Nothing has changed except the size of the lead.

Nineteen goals conceded in 24 matches is knockout-football insurance. Hany Mukhtar and Sam Surridge provide goals from more than one source, with Surridge among the league’s leading scorers. B.J. Callaghan has kept the squad available all season while Seattle and New York City FC spent the summer fielding partial teams.

Availability was our thesis in August, and the table has confirmed it. Seattle sit 13th in the West on 27 points with the lowest goals-scored total in the conference. NYCFC are ninth in the East, clinging to the final Wild Card place.

The Ones in Trouble

Sporting Kansas City are having a historically bad season. Fifteen points from 23 matches, four wins, and a goal difference of -35 (twenty goals worse than any other club in MLS). They have conceded 58.

Columbus, Atlanta and Montréal occupy the bottom three in the East on 23, 22 and 21 points. Montréal have conceded 50.

Orlando and Cincinnati are the outliers. Both hold direct-entry places on 31 points with negative goal differences, having conceded 56 goals each. Cincinnati were the healthiest squad in the league in August, and it has not translated. Whoever draws them in Round One will be pleased.

What Decides the Seeding

Vancouver’s game in hand. Three points behind Nashville in real terms with a match extra to play. The Shield is genuinely live.

Goals conceded, not goals scored. The four clubs with realistic title claims are Nashville (19 conceded), Vancouver (21), LAFC (24) and Houston (27). Inter Miami have 44 and the best attack in the league. Only one of those approaches usually survives November.

Whether Kily González ever starts. A club chasing a deep run with a manager stuck in immigration paperwork is not ideal preparation for a knockout tournament.

The Colorado–Portland margin. Level on 32, one goal of difference between them, fighting over the last direct-entry place in the West. That is a three-match series versus a one-off game against Vancouver.

Nashville are positioned better than anyone in MLS. Vancouver are the only club with a comparable defensive record, and they have a game in hand. Inter Miami will score against anybody and concede to anybody. Everything below those three is fighting over which version of elimination it prefers.
