Four starting quarterbacks have changed since NFL Week 2 ended. One is coming back, three are gone, and as many as six teams could start a different passer this weekend than the one they opened the season with.
That is the single largest source of value on the Week 3 board, and most of it has already been priced. Some of it has not.
Here is every injury that moves a number this week, what it has done to the line so far, and where the market is still catching up.

The Injury That Moved Tonight’s Line
Michael Penix Jr. is cleared to start for Atlanta at Lambeau.
The line responded immediately. The Falcons went from +7 (-110) at the open to +6.5 (-108), and their moneyline shortened from +300 to +270.
Understand what that half-point is buying. Atlanta have scored 16 points in two games. With Cooper Rush and Jack Strand under centre, they have made zero trips into the red zone and turned the ball over five times. The losses were 20-13 at Pittsburgh and 34-3 at home to Carolina.
Penix is not a star. In nine games last season, he completed 60.1% for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions at an 88.5 passer rating. Those are backup-adjacent numbers.
They are also an enormous upgrade on zero red-zone trips. The value of this return is not Penix’s ceiling; it is what his arm does to a defence. Green Bay have been able to stack the box and squat on short routes; a live downfield threat forces the safeties back and gives Bijan Robinson room in a running game already producing 138.5 yards per game against loaded fronts.
The total is the part to watch. It dropped from 44.5 to 43.5, and that movement happened antes the Penix news. If you think the return raises Atlanta’s scoring floor, the Over at 43.5 is a number the market has not yet corrected.
Also tonight: Green Bay are without offensive line starters Zach Bako-Bewele and Aaron Banks. The Packers are 0-2 against the spread this season despite a 1-1 record.
Chicago: Bagent Starts, and the Total Is the Tell
Caleb Williams has a hamstring injury and is week-to-week. Tyson Bagent is expected to start against Philadelphia on Monday night.
This is less severe than it looked when he came off the field, and that distinction matters for anyone who bet a reaction. A hamstring keeps a quarterback out for a game or two; it does not end a season.
But the market has already moved on it. Chicago’s Super Bowl price drifted from +2200 to +4000 on the news, and the Week 3 line has Philadelphia -4.5 with the total set at a suppressed 43.5.
Read the total rather than the spread. Books priced this low because they expect Chicago to run the ball and shorten the game with a backup, which is the correct plan against a Philadelphia front. A team that scored 59 points in Week 1 and three in Week 2 is now being priced for roughly 19.
Washington: Mariota Replaces Daniels
Jayden Daniels suffered another elbow injury (the same one he dealt with last season) and could be out long-term. Marcus Mariota starts.
Washington are 0-2, allowed 30.5 points and 325 yards per game, and have recorded zero takeaways. Their Super Bowl price nearly doubled out, from +8000 to +15000.
The Week 3 number is Seattle -4.5 with a total of 41.5, one of the two lowest on the board.
That 41.5 is the honest price of this situation. Seattle are 2-0 without their own starting quarterback and just won 31-7. Washington are 0-2, without theirs, with no takeaways and a defence conceding 30 a game. Nobody expects points, and the books have said so.
New York: Dart’s Season Is Over
Jaxson Dart is having knee surgery and his 2026 season is reportedly finished. He is expected to make a full recovery.
This is the injury the Week 3 line does not yet reflect, and it is the most important sentence in this article.
The opening numbers for Week 3 were posted on Sunday, September 20. Dart’s injury came in the Monday night defeat to the Rams. The board went up with New York at -5.5 against Tennessee, priced for a quarterback who will not play.
Check that number before you touch it. If it is still sitting at -5.5 on a team that just lost 28-6 and has now lost its starter for the year, the market is late. If it has moved to -3 or -2.5, the market has caught up, and the value is gone.
This is the practical version of a rule we have written before: you are betting a number, not a team, and the number is only good until the information changes.
The Injuries That Are Not About Quarterbacks
Myles Garrett remains out for the Rams. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has missed since Week 1, and Los Angeles are only -2.5 at Denver on Sunday night despite beating the Giants 28-6. That short number is partly altitude and partly the absence of their best defender. It is the fact we flagged in Week 1, and it has not changed.
The Chargers’ offensive line is the story of their season. Los Angeles is 0-2 with a -24 point differential, allowed six sacks, and averaged 14.0 points em um 17.4% drive success rate. Their Super Bowl price doubled out from +2500 to +5000, and the market notes describe severe injury fallout across the starting lineup. They travel to Buffalo as 7-point underdogs, a line that has already moved through the key number from -6.5.
Pittsburgh are thin at the skill positions and on the offensive line. The Steelers are averaging 11.5 points and 249.5 net yards no 3.81 yards per play, and drifted from +5000 to +8000. They host Cincinnati as 3.5-point underdogs at home.
And Seattle are still without Sam Darnold, which, after Drew Lock threw three touchdowns in a 31-7 win, the market has stopped treating as a problem.
How to Actually Bet an Injury
Wait for the number, not the news. The value in an injury is almost never available after the headline. By the time a quarterback is officially ruled out, the line has usually moved. The exception is exactly the Dart situation above, news that breaks after the board is posted and before the books reprice.
Distinguish the injury from the replacement. Losing Caleb Williams matters more than losing most starters because of what Chicago’s offence is built on. Losing Sam Darnold turned out to matter very little because Drew Lock threw for three scores. The question is never “who is out,” it is “what is the gap”.
Check the total before the side. Quarterback changes move totals more reliably than spreads, because a backup changes how a team plays more than whether it wins. Chicago at 43.5 and Washington at 41.5 are both the books pricing tempo, not talent.
And remember that offensive line injuries are underpriced. The Chargers have surrendered six sacks and produced 28 points in two home games. That is not a quarterback problem, and it moved their championship price by more than most quarterback injuries do.
What Has Already Moved
| Jogo | Ferida | Line move |
|---|---|---|
| Falcons at Packers | Penix returns | ATL +7 → +6.5; ML +300 → +270 |
| Chargers at Bills | LAC offensive line | BUF -6.5 → -7 |
| Eagles at Bears | Williams out | Total set at 43.5 |
| Seahawks at Commanders | Daniels out | Total set at 41.5 |
| Titans at Giants | Dart out for season | Posted at NYG -5.5 before the news |
What to Check Before Kickoff
The Giants line. It was set before their quarterback needed surgery. Either it has moved, or there is value in Tennessee.
Tonight’s total. 43.5 was set before Penix was cleared, and the drop from 44.5 had nothing to do with him.
Friday and Saturday practice reports. Week-to-week designations like Caleb Williams’s resolve late, and a Saturday upgrade can move a Monday night line several points.
And the Chargers’ line, in both senses. Their offensive line determines whether -7 in Buffalo is a fair number or a generous one.
Four quarterbacks changed in three days. The board has absorbed three of those changes and is still catching up on the fourth.
