Milwaukee finished with the best record in the MLB. They are +600.

The Dodgers finished a game behind them with an identical run differential. They are +200.

That gap is three times the price for one game in the standings, and it is the most interesting thing on the board heading into October. The postseason field is set, four teams have byes, and the market has already decided which of the two best regular-season teams it actually believes in.

The bracket: Milwaukee, the Dodgers, Tampa Bay and Cleveland have byes. The Wild Card Series are Braves vs. Phillies, Padres vs. Cubs, Yankees vs. Red Sox, e Astros vs. White Sox.

Why the Dodgers Are Favourites Without Being the Best Team

Milwaukee won 98 games. The Dodgers won 97. Both finished at +200 in run differential. By every measure the regular season provides, these were the two best teams in baseball, and there was nothing between them.

The market has them three prices apart.

The reasoning is not mysterious. The Dodgers are back-to-back champions who added Tarik Skubal at the deadline; they have postseason pedigree in a sport where October is largely a bullpen-and-rotation exercise, and they have the payroll to have assembled depth for exactly this month. Their +230 preseason price has barely moved all year: the market has believed in them since February, and nothing shook it.

Milwaukee’s +600 is the market saying the regular season and October are different sports. A team built on run prevention, depth, and consistency across 162 games is not obviously the same team across a five-game series in which one starting pitcher can decide everything.

Whether that is fair is the bet. Milwaukee at +600, with a bye, the best record in baseball, and a +200 differential, is the most defensible long price on the board.

The American League Is Genuinely Open

Four AL clubs sit between +800 and 18-1, which is not how a conference usually looks.

Tampa Bay at +800 era 80-1 in the preseason. They won 96 games, took the AL’s top seed, and are still the least-discussed good team in the sport. They have the bye and the best record in the league.

Cleveland at 12-1 have the shortest price to reach the LCS of any AL club at -105, which is the market pricing the bye rather than the team. The Guardians held off the White Sox to win the Central and took the second seed: a team that finished around .520 gets to skip a round entirely.

Boston at 15-1 e Houston at 18-1 both have a +600 pennant price, which is the board saying those two have similar ways despite very different seasons.

No AL team is shorter than +800. That is a conference nobody has solved.

The Yankees at +850, and the Format

New York won 90 games with the best run differential in the American League. They are the fourth seed; they have no bye, and they open against Boston.

This is the structural point we have made for two weeks, and the bracket has now confirmed it. Byes go to the top two division winners, not the top two records. Tampa Bay and Cleveland got them. The Yankees, with a far better season than Cleveland’s, did not.

Their price reflects it. At +850, they are fourth on the board despite being, on the underlying numbers, one of the two best teams in their league. Their odds to reach the LCS are +200; worse than Cleveland’s -105, from a team that won eight more games.

That is not the market undervaluing the Yankees. It is the market pricing a format that makes them play an extra series.

The Two Prices the Books Do Not Want

This is the detail worth knowing, because it is unusual.

The favourites are not causing sportsbooks much trouble. The liability is concentrated on the longest shots on the board: the San Diego Padres at 22-1 and the Chicago White Sox at 40-1.

The White Sox began the season at 500-1, tied for the longest odds in baseball. They then won 81-plus games, pushed Cleveland to the final weekend for the Central, and took a wild card. Anyone who put a small ticket on them in February is now holding something the books would very much like to see eliminated on Tuesday.

They open at Houston, and their 12-1 pennant price is the longest of any AL team.

Houston at 18-1: The Team That Should Not Be Here

The Astros won the AL West with a losing record and a negative run differential, and they will host a playoff series.

We called Houston and Texas pretenders a fortnight ago on exactly those grounds: both were 78-79 with differentials of -52 and -37 in the weakest division in baseball. Houston came out of it. They are the third seed.

Pittsburgh finished above .500 with a positive run differential and are at home. So did Detroit, with a +71 differential, better than Cleveland’s, the White Sox’s, and Houston’s.

18-1 is a generous-looking number until you look at how they got there. A team outscored across six months is not a live World Series price; it is a team that gets a home series because of geography.

Where the Value Is?

Milwaukee at +600. Best record in baseball, a bye, a +200 run differential, and a price three times the Dodgers’ for a one-game difference in the standings. If you think the regular season means anything, this is where it is cheapest.

Cleveland at -105 to reach the LCS is the cleanest expression of what a bye is worth. You are betting on a structural advantage rather than a team.

And the fade is Houston at 18-1, for the reasons above.

The Dodgers at +200 are not value and are not supposed to be. They are the best team, they are priced as the best team, and short prices on favourites are how books make money in October.

What We Got Right, and Wrong

Right on the Yankees and the format, which we flagged for two weeks before the bracket confirmed it.

Right on Houston and Texas as pretenders: one of them won the division at a losing record, exactly as described.

Right on Detroit and Pittsburgh, both eliminated with better underlying seasons than teams that qualified.

Wrong on Cleveland. We wrote a fortnight ago that their six-game winning streak would not hold up against a +3 run differential, and that the projection favoured the White Sox for the Central. Cleveland won the division and took a bye. The streak held and we did not think it would.

And right, eventually, on San Diego: we said their 9-1 run mattered because it sat on top of a standings cushion rather than instead of one. They are in, and Arizona are not.

What Happens Now?

Four best-of-three Wild Card Series start this week, with the winners meeting the rested top seeds in the Division Series.

The two byes in each league are the whole advantage. Milwaukee and the Dodgers in the National League, Tampa Bay and Cleveland in the American League: four teams who do not have to survive a coin flip before October properly begins.

The National League will send its six best teams. The American League will not. That difference is visible in the prices, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before betting on any of this.
